The sculpts do seem to be getting more cartoonish- I think it started with the Skaven release, then toned back a little for Beastmen (errrr mentally blocking out the Razagor), and has more or less continued.
In the past sculpts tended to look cartoonish because everything was exaggerated because its a tiny model & you want people to be able to see it on a table. Current models still being sold are pretty much all the Skaven stuff that wasn't re-done for examples- big hands & teeth, etc. (sorry I don't know how to post pics) Now GW definitely has the ability to sculpt extremely detailed models (& do them in plastic). However, the sculpts are steadily getting more embellished or 'cartoony' deliberately.
I think GW is reflecting a greater trend in the style of art used in TT gaming. If you look around at Warmachine, Pathfinder, or WoW it all has similar art (speaking broadly).

Yeah, I mentioned WoW and how many gamers it might have influenced over a decade. So they are expecting a certain style.
But broad surfaces are easier to paint, too. Not much use sculpting individual hairs on a rat if it drives people insane trying to paint and move them.

I dont think hes talking about the actual outlandish creatures themselves, but rather the proportions. I tend to agree with him. WH has always been "cartoony" but the proportions have never been as stylized as they are now.

what a lot of sculpts look like, more than anything, is something you'd see out of World of Warcraft. Not so much saying that GW is imitation WoW's art, but rather a lot of stuff has that sort of subtle angled look like the character models in WoW due to the graphics engine.
Stuff like Snikch's curving cape, the plastic Daemon Prince's wings & muscles, etc. It doesn't flow organically, it's as though it's trying to be modeled on a surface of multiple flat edges attempting to approximate a curve.
EDIT: lol, just saw that was already mentioned.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Actually old miniatures were more cartoonish, especially the Dwarfs.
But it's good that GW release now very large plastic kits like Arachnarok, Zombie Dragon and Stonetusk (er, I mean Thunderhorn ).

Again, i dont think cartoonish is the right word. I think what the OP was trying to say was 'stylized.'
A good example of this would be, say, the artistic style of the upcoming KOTOR mmorpg.

It's the paint jobs IMO that they're doing, especially on the O&G models which is really offputting.

Yes. It's very mild with the new TK, but the Snake Surfers and Sepulchral Stalkers are certainly cartoonish and deviate greatly from previously established norms for WHFB. Orcs have always been a bit of comic relief so it's not a big deal with them. The new Ogre models are very cartoonish and over the top. They're still cool in their own way though.
Really though, with armies like Skaven, Tomb Kings, and Vampire Counts, and Lizardmen you can't really expect WHFB to be a deadly serious medieval war game. There have been cartoonish/silly elements in it for years.

I agree that some of the new GW sculpts have become a bit more cartoonish, even in 40K, with some of the new vehicles, like the Stormraven. As long as they don't make it worse than it is now I can accept it, it's just important to keep the grimdark setting, because I think it's what a lot of the fanbase loves.

Batman: TAS wasn't really too grimdark.
Now, Exo-Squad? For a cartoon on Saturday mornings...that was dark. Slavery, racial inequality, and genocide were the whole basis of the main conflict.

OK, to be fair I was like 5-9 years old when that show was on so my memory is a little foggy.
