Going off topic a bit, reading through the horus heresy series, im surprised I havent heard of any other human civilisation who made astartes equivalents, the IOM cant have been the first.

The Space Wolves fight one in Prospero Burns IIRC and doesn't the false Emperor in Horus Rising have enhanced soldiers that are a bit like Marines?

Humans (unfinished experiment

It hints in the Battle Missions book that the Necrons created humans,to use as cattle to feed the C'tan.

That didn't work out at all then. Considering the war against the Old Ones happened long before humanity was likely out of the stone-age, I doubt that. The Old Ones would be the ones that created humanity if they were ever even created by an outside force.

Necron codex mentions them as an Old One creation, but not evolved beyond comical ape-things. The Necrons have been dabbling with them also (to foster the Pariah gene and make them a subjugated food herd) for a long time also.

Basically humanity was in the Bab 5 situation of having two uberpowerful races monkeying around with its DNA, though both went dormant or dies before humanity evolved sapience. The Necrons still want to harvest Humanity to make human-burgers with fries for the Ctan (until new fluff drops anyway) with the Pariahs being sheepdogs, rather than sheep..

Too bad the pilot is more than just big and tough...

If you want an intelligent, fast-reacting and skilled pilot, use a computer. You don't need to make a superhuman giant when all you need is a superhuman brain. Unfortunately AI in the 41st millenium seems to be worse than it is today, in every single way.

thats because of a very bad situation with AI remember imperium use to have walking robots doing all their chores - and 40k has something better then AI - the human brain plugged into a machine.

No, the soldiers in horus rising are not more powerful than normal humans merely invisible and with a giant gun. The false emperor however was described as having the face of a god and being giant
but he was probably weaker than a Primarch seeing as how he was killed pretty easily.

We already know that other species have battled them thousands of times so surely they would have discovered the secrets of a space marine and tried to make them themselves, unless i'm missing something completely obvious.

regardless of how many living/dead astartes have been examined by alien races the real key to their success is at the genetic level, in all honesty the Tyranids alone probably have the potential to best utilize the genetic structure encoded in space marine geneseed. You can't forget who created the space marines, no regular human scientists, but the single most psychically potent mind in the galaxy. The type of intelligence needed to create a such an advanced process that it literally transforms one species into another is almost unfathomable. So regardless of how advanced Tau or Eldar may be, they do not have the mental know how to create something like space marines.

Besides, as has already been mentioned, if you can create technological and biological handicaps that bring you to the level of a space marine (Crisis Suits, Grotesques, Incubi, Wraith Walkers) then there is no need to try and make your own version.

I read that they did so,resulting in creating Tyrant Guard, and the space marine DNA is the secret to their durability.
