On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

As a first episode it held the attention, I will reserve judgement until I have seen a few more, given the characters time to flesh out a little. I think it is unfair to judge any series on its opener - many of them are a bit ropey because they are having to set the scene, and you don't have any familiarity with the elements.

Importantly, I thought a couple of the main characters (punching police man and Avatar General Hardass) were pretty cool, and the plot line of having some other, nefarious group (taken straight from the 'others' from Lost, one of the strongest and most intriguing plot elements in that series until everything got demystified) in amongst dinosaurs trying to kill them is a good idea. And is it really another timeline they have created? I wonder..

Re. the 'made up dinosaurs', I believe that a large percentage of the fossil record is unaccounted for, or rather we have only found fossils from that period of a tiny cross-reference of animals that scientists are sure must have existed, I think the figure is something like 5%? New species are being discovered all the time, giving the show creators some real room to create some interesting (and scary!) new species.

We're just gonna @#$% you up.

I thought it was pretty good...considering.

Pilots or first seasons generally need some time before they really catch their stride. Perhaps everyone who "hates" this show should maybe give it a chance to impress? Obviously the first episode is designed to set the groundwork for future episodes...mysterious carvings, missing son for TN leader, Sixer possibilities, blooming teenage romance, blahblahblah....

There was no story or real adventure yet...they just introduced everything.

Sure the premise was stupid....it's science fiction...duh. Yea, Star Wars was perfectly logical. Trek makes absolutely perfect sense...all the time. Quantum Leap went on for years and years with probably the dumbest premise ever seen on TV. Science fiction is as a rule....dumb. Take Jurassic Park for instance since we're going to compare this sub-standard show with that perfect Speilberg release. If you know anything about biology and science....that show simply pissed you off. It's called suspension of disbelief. Learn to embrace it when watching slowed Sci-Fi shows. (pretty much all sci-fi is slowed if you know enough about the 'science' they're making a 'fiction' of)

Be glad there is some more Sci-Fi on TV for us to watch instead of another dumb reality show or another show based off of the Kardashians for cripes sake.

I've set my Tivo for this...I'll be watching it. I'm giving it a chance. It's at least watchable. I see potential here.

Actually, this is a discussion about a television show with a poorly constructed review as the original post.

I am just pointing out flaws here.

Which is fine, but that CAN be done without being a d**k

Not to mention my original post was simply my initial reaction, not a research thesis.

I sometimes forget the interwebz is such serious buisness...

Sorry I debunked your very misleading first post. I know it may seem like I am being a jerk, but really I was just pointing out your errors. So people looking at this as a review can see what is actually up with the show.

Again, sorry if correcting you makes me seem like a d**k. Life must be hard..... (<--d**k move)

I'm done feeding the troll.

This was and has been a pretty casual and non-confrontational thread. Yet you seem to want to come in with guns blazing as if some crime against humanity has been committed.

Notice that the thread title has question marks. These denote an uncertainty and a desire for others to give opinion and clarification, not a hard stance/statement.

I didn't state :"This show is fail". I am asking "Is it a fail"? Clearly my initial reaction to the show was one of uncertainty and thus a desire to discuss it. Yours seems more a desire to grow your epeen and be confrontational.

You then proceeded in multiple posts to act shocked/offended/morally outraged that someone didn't understand or get every detail of the show correct, and proceede to nitpick and point out the details of the plot/setting that i got wrong supposedly as proof of why my initial post bothered you even though those things are not central to what i disliked about the show (Bad CGI and weak acting).

I didn't suggest the show failed due to time travel or glyphs, I took issue with the acting and subpar CGI.

So yes berating me about mis-remembering details or specifics of plot/setting (when they arent even the focus of my concerns about the show) makes your intent in this thread fully transparant.

All true and I do agree with you.

Now it is your turn to agree with me:

There isn't much else on TV...

I caught my wife watching Super Sweet 16 and Jersey Shore the other day because she was "bored". If she decided to watch Terra Nova and Falling Skies instead, I would have no complaints.

There are some funny shows on.

And some awesome shows are

Game of Thrones (The only great fantasy to be on tv since ever)

Walking Dead (Zombies where everyone isn't an idiot and plot actually matters)

Spartacus (This is just sex and blood, but they don't try to be something different and the fight scenes are awesome.)

Although i agree that there is multitudes of stuff worse than both Falling Skies and Terra Nova.

Not at all transparent. I was being fairly civil until you went off and yelled "TROLL TROLL!" Then I decided, why not?

I pointed out things that you missed, which you really should not have missed given that they were pretty big plot points. I mean, whole scenes dedicated to them. Sorry I didn't hand it to you easy. I just came out and told you that you should probably watch it again before attempting to pass any judgement, seeing that you missed some big details.

These issues that did not bother you that much are the first ones you brought up in your original post. Also, if you want this post to be about a discussion of the show, you should change the title. People are going to look at it and go "Oh, I guess that show bombed." How about the title "Terra Nova, what did you think?" to get a little discussion going.

My issue is your post was basically sandbagging the show on plot points that you were entirely wrong about. I pointed that out. You became upset with "TROLL! TROLL!" Really silly.

I am still agreeing with you!

However...I have watched those shows to death...

The good news is, Fringe and Dexter just started. Those are good enough, and shows like Terra nova can be filler shows to watch while I am bored. Oh, Castle and Big Bang Theory started back a few weeks ago, so there is those as well.

I was really looking forward to it, because I love me some dinosaurs. But we had to turn it off half way through. Absolutely unwatchable.

Multi-doctorate wife with cop husband, and they can't control their reproductive urges? Stupid. It is a blatant play into the mommy worship culture in the US, where a mother or children are always to be supported by all, and can do no wrong. I found it revolting that these people, living in a world that was broken and poisonous due to overpopulation, put their own urges above science, the law... even the well being of these very children they felt entitled to make. Yeah, a scientist ignores the science of carrying capacity... this microbiologist can't draw the link between a poisoned atmosphere and lag phase of culture growth (lag phase is when the culture numbers drop due to lack of nutrients and/or too much waste). A cop that ignores the law. And these are the main characters we're supposed to relate to? Stupid. These two adults should be at the forefront as champions of the two child law, for the health of their two existing children, but they have a third? We speculated that the kid is hers, but not his.

Multi-doctorate wife meekly walks away to let the menfolks talk when asked just after arrival? Stupid. Not consistent with a woman who earned multiple advanced degrees and broke the law to have a 3rd child. Now she will just shut her pretty little mouth and leave when the men need to speak about adult things? Nuh uh. She'd have never made it as a scientist if she behaved that way. Not believable.

Teen angst? Boring. Stupid.

Anyway, had to stop watching when out of no where, there is an splinter group of colonists. My first comment: why don't they move away if they are so freaking unhappy? Just go somewhere else. There is a whole world out there. On further thought: It would have made sense if there had been some sort of foreshadowing about a group that was against the idea of tampering with an alternate time stream. Say, a group that has a philosophical drive of eliminating the settlement. Could have been cool, and even made the show relevant as social commentary about extremism. Instead, its another daddy-son family angst issue. Blah. Boring. Another miss.

So, the mediocre CG, blatant play at mommy-worship, poorly thought out characters, and nonsensical motivations made the show unwatchable.

Edit: clarify some sentences

Watched the pilot this weekend, it was ok. Guess we'll keep watching till it pulls a Heroes and gets dumb in the 2nd season since they used up all their good ideas in the first.

How come archaeologists never discovered 85 million year old fossilized ipods next to dinosaur bones? Did the comet that wiped out the dinosaurs wipe out the colonists too?
