Went into my local GW today, and they've already sold out.
It wasn't my reason for going in, but I might have bought one if they had it.

Kanluwen wrote:Why should they make a copy for every single person out there?
Not every one will buy a copy. In fact, I will be fairly surprised if all the copies sell before this time of next year.
This is an interesting yet quite expected gyration. No one said "they should make a copy for every single person out there", it's a straw man. However, a more reasonable goal, and one they previously had, was "lets print about enough so everyone who wants one can buy one, which has now become "lets print a indeterminate amount so X amount of people who want one can buy one".
While this sort of makes sense for miniatures, I can't quite fathom why'd they'd do this with rules. With all the uncertainty about the legality of FW and IA in games, I don't know why they'd add one more wholly artificial roadblock to actually playing the game - rules that at least some players can no longer purchase even if they were interested in playing it, sort of getting it illegally or via secondary sellers like ebay; neither one of which generates a penny for GWS.

Two more reviews from Warseer:
zoggin-eck wrote:I'm liking the book so far.
Those buying it as a "siege supplement" might be disappointed. The rules look great, and are very simple (Good for me, but bad I guess for people who wanted in-depth or hate the current building rules) and are based on just one scenario. Surprisingly, towers are basically just wall sections with a better selection of upgrades. Having a war machine in addition to a unit per wall and tower section is a great way of getting around how defenceless they are alone.
Sadly, there is little modelling/painting "hobby" content. Some personal armies rather than the usual studio stuff, but no home made or themed terrain. As nice as the stuff is, we've seen most (all?) before in WD and Storm of Magic. Nothing inspiring or "how'd they make that?" like the General's Compendium.
As said, the underground rules are really brief, just a few special rules really. There are, however, five different scenarios so if you do like the rules, there is plenty to play. As said, most odd shaped (not really since it's in caverns) underground battles fit on a 6x4 foot table.
I must say, however, there are so many "missing" words, such as checking "the Warhammer" (rulebook) or forgetting the word "to" mid sentence. Nothing that would ruin the wording of a rule (that I've noticed) but still makes it feel rushed.
All in all, it's a good book with a "best bits of White Dwarf" vibe. I really do hope they do more.
Daniel36 wrote:Bought it today! Very happy to find out it's the same size as army books, and the price was a surprise as well. Not cheap, but cheaper than I expected.
The content had to grow on me but did so really quickly. At first I thought a flying fortress was the silliest thing they could ever put in, but reading through the background material I started to appreciate it more and more.
The campaign rules, from my first quick glance, seem simple enough to be playable but still add enough depth for a fun time. I really like the fact that this has such a strong narrative, but still gives you all the room in the world for your own characters to play a part. Really well done.
One surprise was the artwork. From what I can tell there isn't much recycling, and so much of the artwork was from the Badlands landscapes, something I can't say I've seen done to such an extent before. Very nice surprise indeed.
Another big bonus is how they gave rules and importance to scenery, such as Witchfate Tor. It's good that the scenery you painted up so lovingly also plays a part in the battle. Nice stuff.
As previously stated, the typos and odd sentences that are found every now and then could've easily been avoided, but that's really the only gripe I personally have with the book.
Definitely a good purchase! It actually makes me want to start up a campaign. Mighty Empires certainly couldn't make me enthusiastic.

I picked it up at an independent store where I play weekly, and they actually had a number of copies surprisingly. I like it so far!
Any ideas on where to get castle building material to use with the seige rules? I guess HistArt molds is the best affordable option?

The book is a disappointment. It is clearly a collection of white dwarf articles that GW decided to bundle at a markup.

I bought the 'trice during SoM because it was a cool model, played a couple of games, it was alright. Quickly forgotten, sits there doing nothing now and probably never will again.
Badlands is a repeat of SoM with the exception that there are no cool new models, they're simply trying to hock old models at $50-$70 in multiples. I'm not going to pay as much as a codex for one of these since I don't feel I am getting anywhere near that sort of content. The fact that the missions are not self contained (required the SoM book to play some) just makes me shake my head. So I have to spend $55+$83+whatever siege equipment I need+$62 for a set of fulcrums ($124 in the case of the skullvane skullmanse, skull-lair of the skullomancer). I wanted a full siege campaign book, not something any TO could whip up at a moment's notice.

Which missions aren't self-contained? (Asking out of ignorance, I have the book)
The siege rules stand by themselves, though... simple, but a nice common starting point. I am totally hoping to create a castle for this to do with some friends sometime... maybe the upcoming DakkaCon although that'd be a bit soon to get it together by.

I bought the book yesterday and have scan read it a couple of times. I think it was a good buy the book is nicely presented and the rules seem like a really good starting point to expand apon for a campaign. I very much doubt I'll ever get round to fighting the campaign itself as a whole but certain scenarios and missions look fun to play as standalones.

Autumn campaign requires SoM (i.e. fulcrums, SoM magic rules etc). Like SoM, person with most fulcrums at the end wins.

You know that a trip to whatever the local equivalent of Home Depot is, can yield terrain that you might like more than whatever GW product is the target of the cool kids hatred this week right?
But then you'd have to build something yourself.

I would love to scratchbuild my own siege equipment, but unfortunately GW hasn't given me any motivation to do so. I'd love to create a castle siege diorama for my Bretonnians to take to Armies on Parade next year however, these siege rules are lacklustre. Badlands gives no inspiration, no vision and no motivation to play. If I ever do end up constructing a fortress and siege equipment, it will not be because of Badlands (which should be part of my drive to do so in the first place).

I'm strictly interested in the book for the siege rules(of course I could just use my Annual 2002 rules in the mean time). Any details to share on the siege side of things? I intend to Hirst Arts it up with castles for both of my Elves armies and probably an Empire, a Bretonnian, and a VC castle as well.

Small update: Seems like this book has just been reprinted:
Poncho160 from Warseer wrote:Couldn't see this anywhere else and is not groundbreaking news but for all those who couldnt get it last time and didn't want to pay the stupid e-bay prices, GW have completed a re-print of the Blood in the Badlands supplement, which was as far as I remember a limited edtion run.
Local Gw Manager said they got it in yesterday and it is priced at £27.50. A bit pricey but a nice book non-theless, i got one for myself.

One of the few times I had every intention of buying something from GW, and they told me no. Had it ordered on the site, paid for, and a week later they told me they had run out.
