ifStatement wrote:It's true, there is a inconsistency in what people call geeky. To be honest the sports fans don't bother me that much. It's people who are into cars. I have a friend who is into cars and has took me along to a few of the things he gets up to. He takes his brightly coloured japanese sports car to various car parks after ten o clock at night where he meets similar people with similar cars and they spend the night talking about four stroke engines, intercoolers and how practical and economical cars are lame. I also can't walk down the street with said friend without him commenting on cars going past and assuming I'm interested. How them guys get away with not being called geeks is beyond me.

It's worse to be one of them; at least nobody insinuates that Geeks possess tiny... err... gotta think of a Dakka-friendly way to say this... Fleshborers?

Seriously, I see a guy drive past in a flash car, acting like he owns the road; speeding ahead only to get caught up by everyone else at the next set of lights... I just think to myself 'Man that guy must be compensating for a tiny Fleshborer.'

Corruption does not mean that gangsters have to be involved.

Apparently not. Now, the lightsaber thread on the other hand is where the cool kids hang out.

I love American football. I am obsessed with fantasy football. I'm a huge Niner fan and can roll off stats at a fairly decent clip. Guess what! My wife thinks I'm a giant dork for this. She sees no difference between my painting toy soldiers and watching 10 hours of Sunday football coverage while getting updates on my phone and keeping track of fantasy stats on the laptop. Except that when I'm warhamming I'm in the garage and not bogarting the tv.

There's also a certain amount of hero worship. Sports fans often idolize players or teams to one degree or another. Society expects and approves of this. The wargamer equivalent of this is to whine about Matt Ward/GW/CS GOTO.

It's not the amount of stat-tracking, rule-mongering, team obsession that causes the animosity towards gamers. Like the OP said, you get all of that in sports fans as well. Rather it's the high amount of neck-beardery and lack of females that perpetrates the label against us.

It's really a simple formula: The ratio of pretty girls to beardy fools is directly related to how generally accepted a hobby is. Seriously.

Yeah, I tend to agree.

Kind of makes you wonder if the hobby should develop an awareness campaign aimed at promoting bathing, shaving and dressing tastefully.

I wargame, and I watch football (Not soccer, that is just good practice for real sports that require crotch protection).

I have been to a few gaming stores and played many, many games of 40k, the room where we game have a less than good reputation, I even wear my Tee shirt that says "Please Shower" when I go, it has not helped some gamers that frequent the store to get the message.

I have been to a sports bar to watch football, and the environment is WAY better than a gaming room. There are just somethings that the local watering hole has over the game room...

My evidence?
Spoiler:

That is right, they serve Guinness!

This general way of thinking towards sports fans (which is a much larger fanbase than ours btw) is often why gamers are stereotyped as they are since this appears to be most general consenseus around these parts.

Every hobby has asshats and nice people, its not so much the people that bother me, i just don't like the sports.

Those this doesn't quite fit into my post good luck saying calling someone who is into sports a dumbass in certain parts of the u.k and america. huge possibilty we'll be able to make a very sexy necklace out of your teeth XD

Yeah, I know. ComicCons do it too. Why is the wargaming industry so FAR behind on this trend?

I guess wargaming stores need to expand out into bars as well based on Death Reapers observations..
