Why is impassioned chatter about football teams, where the participants clearly have a great awareness of most individuals who affiliate with said teams, recall past games, their scores and other amusing moments, any different from impassioned chatter about Star Trek/Video Games/Other wherein the participants demonstrate similar levels of knowledge relevant to the subject?

What I mean is, people might mock a nerd for going 'In Episode 422 at 5:16 we see a microphone bob in from the top right of the shot', is that any different from saying 'Torres scored a mega goal in the 1982 premier league semi-final' (that might be gibberish, I don't speak 'Lad').

Seems to me that any pursuit can result in people wasting their lives reclining in a chair/sofa of some kind, saying goodbye to their free time and literally obsessing over/committing every aspect of their passion to memory; I guess some pursuits are just more acceptable than others.

For a real-life example. My old house mates here at university. They would literally break out beers around midday, pretty much every day, and just recline in front of the idiot box and let out some inane chatter. Such was their lives; they hardly went out and yet I was the 'nerd' for playing with my plastic toys/wasting time in my room on vidya games?

Society, honestly...

I call bs, hell the whole "oh you're just not smart enough to understand it" attitude people have is probably a reason behind other people not getting into science fiction.

@the op, I agree with your general point but as Joey said the ones who follow football obsessively tend to be middle aged men with little athletic capacity rather than the stereotypical jock.

I don't think I've been to a single pub where it would be wise to insult people who do sports. Sports may be boring the people who do them aren't.

Because the term "Nerd" has been changed by morons. The original meaning was basically anyone with a specialty in a certain area of something they enjoy.

So we can't call sports fans nerds, but they can call anyone tech-related that. I'm cool with that. Instead I'm going to call all sports fans "twits" and see how long this takes for them to understand.

That's a bit of an unfair example for sports fans: the example for them (While utter gibberish: lets make it Maradona's Hand of God, forever remembered, forever loved) is a fairly 'large' moment: the geek one is pretty obscure and non-contributing event, it's like saying to a football fan "Remember that streaker at the FA cup Semi-Final in 1956?"

Okay, how about recalling the score in a youth league or something way back in 1992? I know people who can pretty much tell you the scores of all kinds of minor rubbish. And they are *my* age!

Yeah, well they ARE nerds! I think most sports fans accept that there are 'trainspotter' types amongst their number - they don't, however, reflect the majority of people who are into sports. Most blokes down the football are just normal dudes who like to drink beer and watch a bunch of millionaires kick a ball around. Sadly, I am one of those blokes.

Sport is a more mainstream form of entertainment than wargaming, and as a consequence, is more visible and familiar to most people than wargaming. This means that less is actually known about the culture of the hobby amongst the general population, and as such, the most visible proponents of wargaming (borderline autistic smelly buck-toothed dweeby virgin creeps) are assumed to be typical of wargamers as a whole. Which, as everyone knows, they aren't, or at least, not as much as is assumed.

In my area, there is a radio stationd edicataed to the local sports scene. I'm cool with it.

I wish there was a local radio station dedicated to the local business scene, specifically my company. I would love to hear the analysis and color commentary about my performance at the last meeting. Who's the rising stars from the lower ranks, and their skill sets. What my co-workers are doing to prepare for the next big sales event.

That would be fun to me.

my father always say craps about european football/soccer leagues, he claimed that all of which are infiltrated by the Triads. and associated with gamblings. especially when football gamblings are now web-based. (this is fact!)
My father also said that all football matches in european leagues are all fixed.

That's the shame. the centre of operations in such organized crime are based in the Southeast Asia. especially Malaysia, Singhapore, and ... even here in Siam!.

I am no gambler myself. but i still watch those footbal shows

It's notable that British leagues seem to be less known for scandal, Cat. Mind you, hooliganism was a big issue over here, and I think it still is in some places.

A good five of the twelve or so people at the ol' wargaming club I used to go to were happily married, and a few of the others look to be going that way soon themselves.

I love sports (baseball, football, etc.). I enjoy playing them, but don't get the opportunity like when I was younger.

Another hobby I had for a little while was private pilot (flying) lessons, but quit for medical reasons.

My hobby time is limited so I have to make choices.

I also like warhammer 40k and painting miniatures. I think you'll find a number of people on this site that watch/play sports and play warhammer or similar games.

A hobby is a hobby. Simple as that. Do what you enjoy. Don't be bitter.

Another factor is that many members of the population have some personal experience in a sport, so feel like they have some basis to talk about it.
