Ah yes, the old "If you want to do well, be a prostitute" argument. That old chestnut never gets old.

I hate that idea, mainly because I've got private school exams on Monday and I need an 100% Bursary even if I pass my exams, otherwise I still can't go. I'm smart, but not financially gifted.

Living in Oxford and catering to the university you see two types of students. The truly gifted, intelligent ones, and the cream of Britain. Cream, of course, being rich and thick.

I've seen some idiots in my time, trust me. I've seen people who've gone to Eton and struggle doing short division.

Well, providing a high standard of education costs money, you know. Sometimes you've just got to whore yourself out a bit.

Yes, a lot of the people who go through private schools are intellectually gifted; some people, however, some people get in for the sake of being rich. I think that Private Schools should select students based on actually academic skill, not how much Mummy and Daddy "donated" to the university.

Well OxBridge have recently complained about how people are rejecting their offers.
In reality what they do best is reputation, there are several Universities that are comparable or better in certain fields of education and tuition with cheaper fees and less stress...

You filthy communist, how DARE you suggest that companies should not make money!

My sister rejected OxBridge for her studies, but amusingly now works at Oxford.

You still have to pay extortionate amounts of money, just I don't think that the difference between out and in a school is having parent who bribe officials.

So very true. Working in close proximity with the university for some time has left me with a healthy disrespect for Oxford university.

It'd be horribly ironic if it was to raise money for AIDS Awareness.

Community colleges accept almost anyone, regardless of grades. They also don't provide as high of an education. Are students in them stupid? Not necessarily, but more students with bad grades/lower intellect from HS are in community colleges than are in 4 year colleges.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I'll have a PhD in 24 days, they aren't particularly special. Basically, you get paid to do all the work that full time members of the department want you to do, while also trying to bang out some kind of dissertation (ostensibly based on "original" research). Its more an exercise in tolerance with respect to Ivory Tower bs than it is an indication of intelligence. Hell, some of the smartest people I know terminated their education at a BA (arguably that decision makes them bloody geniuses), and are now working at places like Goldman-Sachs, the Fed, and Deutsche Bank.

That being said, being able to put "Dr." in front of your name is pretty cool.

It depends on the community college, and the 4 year school. Some places with either particularly good community colleges, or particularly bad high schools, are starting to advise talented students to drop out at 16, get a GED, and start college two years early. Its not a bad deal really, and is still sufficiently uncommon that it makes your application relatively unique.

Conversely, its not altogether unheard of to see community colleges convert into 4 year schools, and 4 year schools convert into 2 year "community colleges".

Howard A Treesong wrote:
People calling those going to Community Colleges 'stupid' are simply expressing snobbishness and elitism. There are plenty of intelligent people who don't even go to college.

One thing that tends to bring down the reputation of community colleges is that the student body is largely made up of people between 18-20, which is to say the less mature half of the nominal college age population. Walk into an introductory course at even a major state school, and you would be hard pressed to see the difference.

Sound slike you learned about the real world. The only thing you didn't learn was how to get the other guy to do it all and then take the credit.

Back to school.

i learned that too. Because without me beating everyone else over the heads and dragging them to weekly meetings and embarrassing them over the lack of progress, nothing would have happened. In the end, because I wrote the report, I ended up doing the talking. I would let other fence questions around and waste time before stepping in and answering it in presentation. The key to taking the credit is answering last and ensuring that your answer is the most correct. Fortunately, that class also had peer evaluations, and I had all the evidence to prove that 90% of the work was mine own.

15 successful trades as a buyer;
16 successful trades as a seller;

To glimpse the future, you must look to the past and understand it. Names may change, but human behavior repeats itself. Prophetic insight is nothing more than profound hindsight.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.
