Exactly where are the RAW that if you are reduced to 0 weapons ur searchlight is also useless?

Actually (IIRC), the sabre has a special rule that allows it to use the searchlight without firing a weapon.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

It's been quoted in this thread multiple times.

To use the searchlight, you have to get a target. There is no permission to acquire a target without shooting a weapon, even if you don't have any weapons.

It probably does, but you still have to explain that powerlifter sentinel

If you would be so kind to point me to the post where its confirmed with other than opinions i will change my mind, but left wondering how the powerlifter works in that case

The people that wrote the rules for it don't actually know all the rules.
The saber having a rule allowing it is even more evidence that the powerlifter sentinel has a useless upgrade.

GW can not even write clear rules most of the time, how do you expect a subcompany to follow them...

The new Chaos Dreadnought thing in the latest Imperial Armour book doesn't even have a designated FORCE ORGANIZATION SLOT for you to take it in, and you're wondering about how FW could have mistaken how Searchlights work? Seriously?

I would suspect it's not so much down to not knowing the rules as just thinking that all Imperial vehicles have searchlights, and not stopping to consider what that would mean on a vehicle with no ranged weapons...

Either way, unless you can present something that allows you to ignore the normal shooting process, there is simply no way within the rules to use the searchlight without firing a weapon. It's not an issue of the rules forbidding it... they simply don't offer any way of doing so.

What's so funny about this is GW doesn't even know the rules to their own game.

Just a question for those of you who believe that you can use a searchlight without firing a weapon.

How do you resolve the searchlight's effect when you DO fire a weapon?

A) Declare you are firing the vehicle and resolve the normal order, with the night fight check and then illuminate the target if successful

B) First use the spotlight and take a night fight check to "spot" the target, then fire at the target with the weapon(s). Please note that this method allows you to take a second night fight check when you go through the shooting sequence.

A, since that's what the rules say.

um

you pick a target to shoot at, then roll NF. if you suceed in spotting it, fire weapons. if you have a searchlight that target unit is lit up.

seems pretty black and white. you need to fire weapons, and thus be ABLE to fire weapons at a target to light it up.

flatout / smoke / no weapons means you are disallowed from shooting, and thus disallowed from attempting to shoot, therefore you may not attempt to aquire a target FOR shooting. searchlight fails.

how is that unclear?????
