There have been worse names in the franchise...
In the games? It's probably the worst name.
Though for a game set in a space-age interstellar war it kinda makes sense that space ships would have something to do with the plot...

Except the game is set after the interstellar war.

The UNSC Infinity is a refitted warship, intended for exploration but with a crew who can protect themselves if necessary.

"Infinity" is a perfect name for humanity's first voyage of peace, not war.

Well after an interstellar war and in the middle of an interstellar cold war. Same thing.

So why weren't we naming the Apollo programs "Haha, Beat You Russia"?

The value of PR is not lost upon Bungie/343 and the UNSC that they've created.
The fact that Spartans were never listed as Killed in Action to propagate the myth that they were unkillable is a perfect example of this.

Well obviously it was named Infinity because of the whole new beginning idea.
But I was talking about the 'plot device' comment.

Looks like ONI's propaganda is working.

Meh, Infinity is just too bland and well, generic. It doesn't conjure up 'brave explorer' to me. Infinity just implies totality. Maybe the UNSC Chasing Infinity or something would have worked.
Oh well, it's not like this is an Iain M. Banks novel, I shouldn't have such high standards.

Aye, the name is a little less interesting then previous ships. That said, it is kind of fitting for a vessel full of scientists.

So I guess I wasn't specific enough before with the whole ONI propaganda quip, but the whole 'explore in peace' is just a cover for the most powerful warship ever build by the UNSC.

While it probably has a lot of science and exploration capabilities, don't think it couldn't level the entire elite homeworld. It is a WARship.

Like most sci-fi with Humanity as a interstellar power. They believe in defending themselves...

Well, if you've read Glasslands, you'd see they are doing a bit more than defending themselves

I don't remember any mention of this ship in Glasslands. All we know is that humans now have acces to forerunner tech and an engineer.

They damn well better have guilty spark showing up in the game. After reading the forerunner saga it's become my favourite character in the series.

Wait... did he not get destroyed at the end of Halo 3?

Or is there a back-up of him?

I'd love to see him return. I was so annoyed when they made him go rampant at the end. It would have been better to keep him as another Chief companion IMHO.

I too will agree that the Cortana level from Halo 3 was terrible.

Go read the forerunner saga.
Spoilers away:

Spoiler:
I'll skip all the back story on who guilty spark really is. But heres how book 2 ends.

Guilty sparks "body" was taken by ONI and they were trying to get as much data out of him as possible. By the end he get's fed up with that, hacks the entire ship and opens it to the vacuum. So we now have a Guilty spark in control of an ONI prowler

They talk about the infinity a bit near the end of the book.
