I'll vote for the self-made man over the heir any day. Someone who comes from poverty had to work really hard and be really smart. Someone who came from wealth... well maybe they worked hard, but I'll always have doubts.

Someone who came from wealth probably has a better education than any prole.

Not that it would rank him above any kind of ideal 'self-made man'... but those perfect Stakhanovite exemplars of capitalism don't seem to crop up much in politics.

Additionally, isn't that kind of attitude a form of 'reverse-snobbery'? It turns being an heir/heiress into a liability. Is being prejudiced against those born into wealth not the same as being prejudiced against those from poor backgrounds? I'm sorry but, though there are notable exceptions, you could spin it that history has yielded more great men from the ranks of the wealthy than from the dregs of society's base. Naturally we can say that it's historically been a lot easier to come to prominence if you come from wealth, but the point nevertheless demonstrates that the wealthy haven't left the nation wanting. If we prejudice ourselves against the rich on principle, then what good candidates are going to be discarded? Idealists say that experience outweighs education and maybe that's right, but there are candidates that may offer both. I'm not arguing for Romney as I am ill-informed on this election, but simply leaping on what I believe to be pointlessly destructive behaviour.
