Someday when/if the gak hits the fan I hope I can pull it together enough to help other people and not just panic.

Agreed.

Also, to another point, can we get like five of these nut-jobs together and send them on their way to congress? Holy gak, the day of the attack and they are already pulling out the "Oh he was registered as a Democrat" bull . Makes me feel sick to my stomach.....

That's because in most UK cities you can go about 5mph due to traffic ;D. I'll agree though that we have more gun and vehicles deaths. As a whole I'd even agree that Americans are more violent. I would also agree that on average an American is under more stress and has more chemicals self injected into it (fast food, pop, energy drinks, etc).

One thing that we do that I don;t know if the UK does is we go through painstaking means to make sure Darwins Law doesn't take effect and the stupid can't kill themselves off. There is some days i wish we didn't

Reports are saying he did his hair like the Joker and told police he was said Joker. I'm thinking nutjob.

Whats the population of the UK statistic by the way? The US has 320mm people.
How many stabbings? It would be interesting to compare the number of stabbings and aggravated assaults with weaponry as a comparison.

Definately nutjob... I've got friends/family in that area.

Let's take a deep breath, pray for the victims and let the authority sort this out... there's a lot of misinformation going around.

My 2 cents when comparing stats from one country vs. another... the methodology of "counting" stats between countries are different, so keep that in mind.

Also why is there no discussion of the tear gas? I don't think a tear gas bomb is exactly legal.

There are different kinds of tear gas... but, yes they're legal up to a certain size. (they are regulated at a state-by-state basis).

Nah, it's about normal: the media has passed from the "reporting the initial skimpy information" phase, and now they're in the "making gak up phase" since they have no real information to report.

In my experience with a large news event like this, you can't really read the news usefully for at least a day. The mandate was overturned, Giffords is dead, and so on; but hey, at least they reported it first right?

Also, 12 dead and 60 wounded? How the hell can you do that without an accomplice or an automatic weapon?? Incredible really.

Well not really.

Initial reports(and the majority of the reports the police have been passing along) had him simply dressed in all black.
A few of those reports mentioned Bane and the Joker, but not in the way that he was "dressed like him".

The majority of the reports of him in all black made note however of the fact that he had "no skin showing and a gas mask", but the few where the witnesses reported those two characters made it clear that they were referring to the SWAT team members on-screen during both kind of "confrontation" sequences who were wearing full tactical gear with helmet, kevlar, and gas masks/balacavas.

He wore a gasmask (perhaps resembling Bane's) and dyed his hair red while calling himself the Joker. I'm no comic book but, but I'm pretty sure he got the costume wrong.

As for my opinions on this: Don't go crying for gun control or blaming this party or that politician. This guy's tired of life and, before he goes, he wants to be known as a real-life comic book villain. He wants to be the next Eric Harris, the next Dylan Klebold. Egocentric acts of self-defeating destruction are not a right wing or left wing idea, it's just an elaborate form of suicide. He's miserable, that's all there is to it.
Don't eternally attach this guy to Batman, that's what he wants. Forget this man's name, don't call what happened the "dark knight shooting" and forget it ever happened (unless it personally affected you). Go out tomorrow, tonight, or head out right now and watch The Dark Knight Rises and form memories around the film that have nothing to do with this shooting.

I saw a few that did, so, yes really. Several news sites used language along the lines of "wearing body armor and a gas mask like the villain in the movie, Bane". Just because you didn't read those stories early this morning doesn't mean they didn't happen.

I'm meaning more that there's a jumble of reports coming in.

The majority of the semi-"confirmed" statements(notably: that of the police) make no reference to him having anything tied to the characters in question.

People try to relate things that are unfamiliar to them to the familiar. In a dark theater, when you're affected by tear gas, a standard issue police gas mask might look very similar to the mask you just saw on screen.

I didn't say that he was connected to the film or that even the stories were connecting it to the film, just that the stories used Bane as a descriptor. I found it odd early reports were using Bane to describe it, and later, the Joker.

The Joker bit seems to be a new development.

Apparently, a "federal law enforcement source close to the investigation" informed news agencies that Holmes had dyed his hair red and told police upon his arrest that he was "The Joker".

Hadn't caught that bit yet, but there's going to clearly be a lot of developments coming.

That really is gak fething luck.

You know, the number one thing I always tell people that is the best about spending years of your life living in gak as a soldier is that you really start appreciate the little things, cold water, hot showers, ice cream.. but most importantly, gak luck. Sometimes a battle leaves the best among you dead and the most incompetent still kicking.

Life is not cruel, its just cold, hard, and pitiless. gak happens, and its all dumb luck. YMMV, but that gak always made me feel way better about my life. Far more than any Religion could. gak happens, and gak happens to good people and good things happen to gak people.

Baby rapers can live to a hundred and I might get a brain tumour tomorrow, but isn't that more comfortable a thought than the fact that there is a grand plan but it involves you dying really young?!

Want really bad odds, be a returning Native American vet in New York state. There you can look forward to being shot in the back of New York State Police, left to bleed out while the police refuse to allow medevac to treat you, and then your family can be told that all the police radio and vehicle recording have vanished, so there's no evidence of a crime.

That said, I feel sorry for the victims of this business and their families. Sadly, it sounds like this guy put some planning and effort into this pointless act.

You're right that a more apples-to-apples comparison would be the handgun fatality rate, rather than absolute numbers. According to..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

The US has the 12th highest rate of deaths from firearms, at 10.27/100,000 ; England/Wales is ~57th, with a rate of .46. So a rate about 5% of ours.

Frazzled wrote:[How many stabbings? It would be interesting to compare the number of stabbings and aggravated assaults with weaponry as a comparison.

Those are two more legitimate questions.
Spoiler:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate US 34th in rate of intentional homicide, at 4.8 per 100,000, UK at 49th, with 1.23 per 100,000
It would be an interesting comparison, but you're right that it's off-topic.

As far as I know, tear gas canisters are legal in most states, exceptions being California and New York, as they're non-lethal ordinance.

Doesn't matter, even milspec CS is legal in most states. Michigan, Mass, Washington DC, New York, Cali and Wisconsin are the only states with laws on the books about pepper or tear gas at all. There are however, local ordinances.

I will point out though that using a triple indoors is considered 'excessive force' Mostly because it will burn the place down.
