Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Friday that the shootings that took place in an Aurora, Colo. movie theater hours earlier were a result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and questioned why nobody else in the theater had a gun to take down the shooter.

Way to blame the victim there.

.. I'm not entirely sure that more people firing -- bearing in mind the complete confusion, the darkness and that whole tear gas thing -- would really have helped matters here in any way whatsoever.

Unfortunately, Bulletproof Jesus, with his divine immunity to teargas and infallible ability to acquire a target and hit it in a dark and chaotic room, was six theaters down watching 'Magic Mike.'

Gohmert seems to be just another one of those ignorant yabbos who thinks guns are the peachiest thing ever, and since he's never actually held or been trained on how to use a gun, thinks that real life runs on hit scan mechanics.

Absolutely. Opening up in return fire in a crowded, insane mess of a dark and tear-gas filled room only works out well in an idiot's mind.

Hell, if there's an evil to action movies, it's that they promote the mindset that any Joe-everyman can pull off such things like they're friggin' Jason Bourne. Otherwise, action movies are just damn good entertainment.

The audience didn't really even have time to react. Unless they were a hardcore trained shooter with a concealed carry and didn't observe the "no concealed carry" of the theater, there wasn't a chance. You are watching a premier and a dude in a gas mask with a Joker shirt comes walking through the emergency exit, the first reaction was it's a stunt as part of the show. They audience didn't realize it wasn't until the gas canisters went off and at that point you have a dark theater, full of panicking people, and tear gas blinding/disorienting you. If you have never been hit by tear gas or CS gas, I'll let you know that the last thing you are thinking is pulling out your gun and trying to draw sites on a dude at the front of a dark theater while people are screaming and running around.

Not to mention the fact that the guy had a "High Caliber AR15" and would have put a hole right through any cover you fired behind.

As Frazz has mentioned, it was a no CC location. You aren't allowed to bring firearms in there with you. Of course no one was armed. This guy is a dumbass.

Googled him. This is the Terror Baby Plot guy:

On August 12, 2010, Gohmert appeared on Anderson Cooper 360° to defend recent comments he made on the floor of the House regarding "terror babies". Initially, Gohmert had claimed (in a speech made on the House floor in June 2010) that an ex-FBI agent had told him about "terror baby" plots. On Fox Business News, Gohmert had later claimed that an airline passenger with a relative in Hamas had a grandchild who was to be intentionally born in the United States.[14] In the interview, Gohmert asserted that pregnant women from the Middle East are traveling to the US on tourist visas, planning to deliver the child there. According to the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, this automatically grants citizenship to the child. Gohmert asserted that the child would then be returned to the mother's home country and be submitted to a life of terrorist training. When repeatedly asked by the host for any evidence of this, Gohmert did not provide substantiation for either the ex-FBI agent story or the airline passenger story, but gave a description of a Washington Post article,[15] which described so-called "birth tourism" packages, mainly directed at Chinese tourists. These packages (one was described in the article for $14,750) were described by Gohmert as a "gaping hole in the security of our country". When asked several times by Cooper for the connection and any corroborating evidence, Gohmert responded "If you don't think this is evidence, you have to believe that the terrorists are more stupid than these enterprising people".[16] The Daily Show later parodied this incident.[17]

The real hero's in that movie theater are the ones that helped other people get out to safety rather than just themselves.

Someday when/if the gak hits the fan I hope I can pull it together enough to help other people and not just panic.

.. the guy's a politician yeah...

..

Terrible event indeed.

I think if people had been armed -- and I have no idea of the likelihood of people simply ignoring the ban on CC weapon anyway -- and had fired back or responded the whole situation would have been much worse.

Must have been confusing enough for the Police, ambulances etc all arriving without also having to try and work out which one of the multiple people shooting was the spanker responsible for this.

Thinking about this, I keep asking "why?" What was his motivation? What was his worldview to do something like this? And I feel like those are the wrong questions. Maybe none of us should give a feth why anymore. Maybe the idea of us asking why is part of the why, like in Se7en. Guys like this want to be wondered about, talked about, analyzed. No one would care otherwise, I guess. Maybe he'd just be a troll on a message board otherwise.

Or crazy starts shooting, and CHLer, not being immune to tear gas or being able to see very well shoots an entirely innocent person.

One also has to remember the slow reaction time was also due in part to the guy being dressed like one of the characters in the film. It would take a minute to catch on that this wasn't some elaborate hoax or part of the show. When I was at the show there where at least two people there dressed as Bane wearing masks and body armor, or a facsimile of body armor. If 30 minutes into the movie one of them had whipped out a gun I don't think anyone would have taken much notice initially.

NO one said they were (well except Dirty Harry). I'd rather have the option than try to go at him barehanded.
There have been several instances where shooters have stopped at churches, bars, etc. They just aren't reported much because, nothing much happens.

Would you feel safer in a movie theater knowing there were ten off duty cops sitting in it, or a theater there were none?

Depends.. am I Ian Tomlinson or not ?

I do feel safer sitting in a cinema in a country where events like this are much rarer than they are in the USA, but, of course, YMMV.

I swear something like this happened in Northern Europe recently. Wasn't there also the matter of a bus bomb in Europe that has the Israelis getting all hot and bothered?

Also it took a pair of dogs to outsmart me....

Much rarer than in the USA? How many have there been in the USA? One? Is that really enough to make you feel unsafe? This alone indicates there is a much greater chance of getting hit by a car in England than getting shot in a cinema in the USA, but, of course, YMMV.

You think there has only been one shooting in the USA? The Tuscon shooter, Columbine, Fort Hood, several University shootings over the last few years, and on and on.

I was remembering the car by the er...nutjob... a while back that mowed into a bunch of people. Running a car into a major premier crowd would be equally horrific. Too many ways for a wack job to go berserk if you start to think about it.

Well of course, though I don't think that argument was put forth that there are no other ways to extinguish a human life. Still, it seems a bit odd to equate a U-haul truck and a firearm. One is made for the express purpose of killing, and the other is vehicle designed for transporting objects.

I certainly wasn't equating the two so much as I was responding to reds8n's comment. He is right that an event such as the tragedy in Denver is less likely (perhaps not at all likely) to happen in the UK; however, I'm just pointing out that you aren't necessarily any safer in the UK from nut-jobs. If someone wants to hurt or kill a lot of people, they'll find a way.

But perhaps this isn't the time or place for that discussion.

Yes.

Much much rarer.

2011 saw 51 gun related deaths in the UK.

The USA in that time saw over 30,000 -- with the vast majority of thse being accidental/non criminal related. It's about 8,ooo criminal deaths caused in the USA in that year.

Plus I know that I am far more unlikely to have a poorly trained -- being generous-- joe nobody sat with a gun who thinks he can be a hero and add to the carnage.

How many have there been in the USA? One? Is that really enough to make you feel unsafe?

In isolation, no of course not. Despite the tragic events I'd feel safe in Norway for example.

Far safer than I would feel in the USA, and that's without taking the attitude of much of the countries population over things like this into the equation as well.

This alone indicates there is a much greater chance of getting hit by a car in England than getting shot in a cinema in the USA, but, of course, YMMV.

What does ?

I have no idea what you're talking about. The UK has one of the best road safety records in the world

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720

"In 2010, the police recorded 1,850 deaths "

as far as I can tell in the same year the USA had 32,885

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year

.. so.. seems our roads and drivers are safer as well.
