I agre with this. The law should see no difference.
The law doesn't see a difference. No-one gets hung for having sex with a 16 year old.
It's a breach of trust, and simply not acceptable behaviour from someone given that trust, but it isn't a death penalty thing. That's just crazy.
The law should be changed. Predators deserve no mercy.
Yeah, let's remove any motivation to stop at sex instead of just killing the witness to ensure their silence. If you're going to get the death penalty anyway if you get caught, might as well minimize the chances of getting caught.
Using that logic there should be no punishment for anything.

Yeah, we should be killing people who have sex with willing 16 year olds.
I mean, what the lady did is wrong, but calling for death is beyond ridiculous.

That's true. It's probably a good rule for Dakka in general - "take a deep breath and remind yourself that no-one in the real world believes anything that silly"

Hey, facepalm all you like, some people have been emotionally scarred by dogs humping their leg (I'm sure there's someone on the internet who has) One of my parent’s friends had a dachshund that humped anything with a pulse, I was lucky enough to never meet it but the stories I heard.... ;_;

these days, you are looking at kids exploring sexuality when they are 12/13/14, not legal age.
Whilst I say yes, in principle what the teacher did was wrong, was there that aspect that the parents of those kids should be asking themselves why the feck their children accepted that.
Not anywhere near a death penalty offence IMO, maybe a slight torturing for involving kids in school, but the career slights and social slights that go with this. She won't ever be able to teach again, so she's out of a job.
Blame someone, blame societal values within the USA, not a teacher who used those values.

No-one is pretending the kids aren't sexually curious. They're 16 year old boys.

On the news today there was a report that stated that for the first time in living memory New York has not had a single recorded incidence of a shooting or a stabbing for a full 24 hour period.
Limited data set, other factors etc but still.

The age of consent in Japan is 13, but they actually have some of the lowest teenage pregnancy rates in the world. I think the idea is that by not having it illegal, it doesn't seem so exotic and amazing, so teens are less bothered by it. Do Not Do This Cool Thing syndrome basically. Tell kids "No, it's dirty, you're too young, you mustn't until you're 16 and married!" just makes them more eager to do it.
By saying "Pfft, you can if you want, doesn't bother me" the mysticism and charm is lessened.
Like every country they do have their problems, like the (now thankfully practically extinct) compensated dating, but sexually Japan is actually quite a safe place. Especially compared to Thailand, where it's unusual for girls to not be in prostitution.
Anyway, whilst what this woman did was certainly wrong, I hardly imagine the boys were too upset about it. And she definately doesn't deserve hanging.

First up, yeah, crime shows a long term trend in decline. Second up, calling for the death penalty for whatever crimes are salacious enough to become media stories won't impact that one bit. "We were worried about our crime rate, but then we decided to have the death penalty for crimes that are sordid enough to make the national media, and we've barely had any crime since" is a thing no-one has ever said.
All of which makes me glad that 'that crime I just read about is shocking let's kill them' is a piece of silliness that appears on the internet a lot, but is far less common in the real world.
