Well, it could be part of a vendetta against Jor-El like in the 1978 movie. I think one of the trailers hinted at that. The other part might be that there's only a handful of Kryptonians left, so Zod wants to gather them for their...unique...abilities in order to rebuild, conquer, etc. Maybe not unlike the Saiyans looking for Goku in the Dragon Ball series. Maybe he sees Kal-El as a potential enemy, and comes from the "keep your enemies closer" camp.

*shrug* I'm sure the movie will explain it.

not long now !

I quiver in anticipation. There seems to be a couple different story influences here, much like Year One was on Batman Begins.

Comic Spoilers and maybe sorta movie spoilers ahead:

Spoiler:
In Birthright at the end Superman sees through a time space portal and is able to communicate with his parents briefly, and that seems like they may have a moment like that here. There was another story (was it still Birthright?) where Krypton is shown as a feudal system, and children are all products cloning or intro or something like that, but Jor-El goes against it and has a natural child, which makes him special. If the ability to reproduce is lost and they need the DNA of Kal-El that would explain why they would come looking for him. I also believe that is where the idea of the S being a symbol for hope came from.

I keep seeing tentacles and can't help but wonder if Braniac is floating around here somewhere.

Superman clip is well worth a watch.

What tentacles? The tubes disconnecting from his baby carriage as its taking off? Least that's what I took them to be.

They are only shown for a second, but there are huge mechanical tentacles striking out, but it is very brief. I'll see if I can find a screenshot.

I've seen it. It's in a fight scene over some rural desert looking town that seemingly turns into a three way battle between the tentacle bot, Supes, and the army. That's how I pieced it from the trailer anyway.

I think the tentacles though might be part of Zod's ship which might be connected to Brainiac.

Well so far the reviews coming in have generally been positive. The one negative review I saw was fairly awful in that the reviewer thought that comic book movies should only be campy and silly, and since it was considerate of the character and wasn't SuperFriends live action then it was just terrible. I found that review less than compelling.

I did like that several referred to it as a sci-fi movie instead of a comic book movie.

Wait it's already out in America? Racism...

It has been screened for critics, and some limited audiences, but has a fairly large opening across multiple countries. The UK and the US get it Friday the 14th, but Taiwan and the Philippines get it on the 12th, and quite a few get it on Thursday the 13th (South Korea, Thailand, Chile). For some reason Australia and New Zealand are getting hosed with a 27th release day. I can see a week later, but two weeks is a bit much.

I for one am glad that Superman 6: The Return of Superman 2 will revisit his origin.

It's been 2 or 3 years since Smallville finished so I barely remember what planet he came from or how he got his powers. I hope they've put aside half the movie to explain that.

The last time they did a cinematic origin was 35 years ago.

Yeah, reviews seem mostly good, not great. It's interesting to me that the negative comments tend to take either one of two opposite paths. Either it isn't "fun" -- i.e. campy with wisecracks like the Donner film -- or it lacks the gravitas of the Nolan Batman films.

Which goes to show you that movie reviewers are far from immune to the influence of expectations on their opinions. I get that those are two iconic franchises and that this film can't avoid comparisons as a result. But I plan to watch MoS as being its own film.

I went on Rotten Tomatoes, saw a 70% positive review and most of the reviews seemed rather negative. I'm still looking forward to seeing it tomorrow night. I think it's gonna be awesome.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

When I first posted that not as many reviews had come in, but I also am not going in expecting it to be loved by critics as much as the audience. We also still have a lot more reviews to go so who knows what it will stabilize at. Gorgon also pointed out that a lot of the reviews that were negative seemed to want campy and goofy or something on the level of The Dark Knight, but with Superman.

I find the concept of Superman fairly boring ("Hurr hurr I'm completely invincible!"), though with good writing he can be pretty cool, like when he has to fight entities on his level or the kind of thing David Carradine talks about in Kill Bill. This looks decent. I do have to say, though, the previous Superman movie was fairly forgettable to me, except for Kevin Spacey's badass Lex Luthor.

Superman isn't "completely invincible" being vulnerable to magic and kryptonite but you're right about when he fights enemies at his level of power and doesn't have to hold back.....

And, as an added bonus, he did beat the crap out of Goku in one of the latest Death Battles.....

Cut to 15:45 if you want to avoid the pre-game notes and just watch the fight.

I always loved that scene.
