Kitchen Nightmares is actually very good if you can get to see the British ones, before he was brought over to the US for Fox.
He actually dealt with business issues and tried to fix things and you actually see him working with chefs to improve standards and techniques. The American version, with the voice over guy and dramatic music is a farce in comparison, I occasionally watch them, but it's nothing like as good a show.
And it's all a shame, because whilst he is a pantomime character over here, he was a passionate and skilled chef. Even Bourdain said that he admired his skill and love of his craft when you see his British shows. The F word is another great show he did over in the UK.
But yes, watched this the other day, pure comedy gold.

Shame on all you internet haters, you are doing exactly what the Illuminati is telling you to do and ruining these good people, their fine establishment and excellent food. Is there no escape from this plot here even on Dakka, for shame!

I didn't get to see many episodes of it, but The F Word was my favourite show of his.

I've watched a good bit of F Word on BBC America. It is indeed a good 'un. Original Kitchen Nightmares is pretty good too, but gets repetitive.

I never liked his kitchen shows myself. Being an as for the sake of being an ass, which is often how he depicts himself, doesn't really jibe with me... always put me off, even when others were entertained.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I've never seen him be an ass for the sake of being an ass. I've seen him be verbally abusive toward people, generally when they're doing stupid things, because that's his shtick (and that kind of domineering and loudmouthed personality is apparently not that rare among chefs, though maybe Monster Rain can correct me on that if I'm mistaken).
In most of Ramsey's shows it's quite obvious that he cares about cooking, about nutrition, about quality, and about customers. And about trying to help businesses be viable and put out good product.

Samy and I would like to address the deportation allegations that came to light yesterday.
All allegations of Samy having this criminal past is completely untrue and are being made up to destroy us. The hackers are at it again.
These people are trying to destroying us, our restaurant and our very livelihood.
I want you to think for a second how this will effect us and our kids. kids who are meowing in fear of loosing their daddy. They were crying last night, "meow...meow...meow"
It just breaks my heart what these haters are doing to us.
I mean seriously...
Deportation process linked to failure to disclose past on immigration application?
We have nothing to hide. If we did have something, Samy would have wrote it on the application. I'm sure of it.
Involvement with drug distribution, threats, extortion?
These were all done by the hacker that hacked our account previously.
Again, he went into our Facebook and Yelp accounts and changed our records
to make it seem like Samy has had suspicious criminal history.
Samy doesn't make threats. We are the ones being threatened here.
Kicked out and banned from France and Germany?
Neither Samy or I have never even been to those states.
So how could we be banned from there?
These are just awful people trying to destroy our grand reopening and stopping us from being successful. Hell's Kitchen is really destroying our lives.
Meow
Amy & Samy
I guess Sammy claiming to be a gangster on a national show as a means of attempting to intimidate Gordon wasn't such a good idea after all.

In most of Ramsey's shows it's quite obvious that he cares about cooking, about nutrition, about quality, and about customers. And about trying to help businesses be viable and put out good product.
And that's what made The F Word so good. It was essentially him just gushing about his love for his work, with none of the distractions or screaming.
In the British version of Kitchen Nightmares, they don't sensationalize his persona nearly as much. I remember one episode where he was actually nothing but friendly.

My brother and father are both chefs, it's common to be a domineering bastard in the kitchen, you have to hustle. In my brother's last kitchen in london, there were about 70 staff active in the kitchen during the main service, of a great ethnic diversity, the italians hated the north africans, the polish hated the romanians etc. So you had to be less like a cook and more like a commissar to get them to do the gak you want.
My dad ran a large kitchen like that in his youth as well, even to this day, when he shouts, he reverts to the London accent he'd picked up back then.
So many chefs and second chefs are loud and aggressive bastards. Also, if I recall, Ramsey grew up in the Glasgow housing projects, which is as tough a place to be a kid as we have in the UK, to an abusive alcoholic family. So it's not all show, it's just that his American shows really amplify and concentrate on it, because the Americans are fascinated by nasty Brits.
And the F Word was a great show, really showed what Ramsey is capable of. Another bloke that is very good to watch talking about food from over there is Hugh Fernley Wittingstall, who is remarkable as the only other celebrity chef that Ramsey doesn't hate into a hole in the ground. He's not really a chef, but a cook with a real passion for sustainable catch, grow your own etc.

He reminds me of a DI. He tears people down, then rebuilds them. The thing I really like about kitchen nightmares is that it's a great study in problem solving. He spends most of the show at what could be called doing a "Gemba Walk", finding out for himself what is wrong with a restaraunt. Then he comes up with a plan for the place. After all that he comes back for a follow up, sometimes to find the fixes didn't stick.
It's a classic PDCA method that he seems to use.

Oh no, in my experience it is extremely common. The thing about working in a kitchen is that time is always a consideration, so if you're doing something wrong that's holding everyone else up you will be told in a very succinct manner exactly what your problem is. Combine this with (and correct me if I'm wrong here) the fact that people in the UK are rather more liberal with profanity, and Gordon seems extreme by even those standards, and that's where a lot of his persona comes from.
Honestly though, it's the quiet chefs that unnerve me the most, though. I worked for a guy that would just stare you down and quietly explain why you're an idiot. It was like working for Roose Bolton.

His US show is definitely much more on the dramatic side. I've only a seen a few episodes of his British version of the show but I liked them all.
Ramsey doesn't strike me as an ass for the sake of being an ass neither. I got that vibe off Simon Cowel sometimes, but not Ramsey. Ramsey tailors the way he speaks to people and watching some of his other shows it becomes very clear how perceptive a man he really is. He knows how to push people.

Cowell should be sealed into a container and fired into the sun.
Ramsey, like Anne Robinson during her time over here on The Weakest Link, has obviously been told to ramp it up to 11 on the 'mean' scale and is doing so, unlike Robinson, his shtick seems to have won over a sizable viewer rating. So he has sold out, but he's making a fortune doing it, so fair enough really.
@ Monster Rain, I think profanity comes far more readily to Brits than Americans and not all of it bad, we also indulge in friendly insult that seemed utterly unheard of when I came to PA.
I know of several friends who'd greet me at the bar in my local with 'hello you orrible gakker' or 'alright you old fether' and it was a heartfelt greeting. You speak to someone like that in the states, even on knowing them well, and it's not well received/causes confusion.

I think what really made me like Ramsay was when I saw him in other shows. These two clips are probably my favourites:

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the exaggerated persona quirks, at least on Kitchen Nightmares, come from the way they edit it in the North American version.
I also hate the sound design. That squealing noise that comes on whenever something even slightly wrong happens gets so annoying.

If her husband gets deported you may be in with a chance
Do you really want a wife that knows a worthless "foreign" language and have three kids that think it's okay to gak in a sandbox? Maybe you like soggy pizza. Regardless of which of these three facts are what drive you to want her, you may want to have your brain removed for careful study. I suggest getting a new one, while they're studying yours.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Amy’s Baking Company owners Amy and Samy Bouzaglo are making the best of their nasty and embarrassing appearance on Gordon Ramsay‘s Kitchen Nightmares by capitalizing with their own reality TV show, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.
The off-the-wall and loud-mouthed couple is currently entertaining several offers from production companies for their own show — and an insider tells Radar that Amy and Samy hope to seal the deal.
“Right now Cineflix is the most serious production company trying to secure Amy and Samy. They want to develop a show around their restaurant and their bad behavior,” the source revealed.
“Amy and Samy are all for it because they feel like it’s the only way to keep their restaurant open.”
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Amy and Samy’s appearance on Kitchen Nightmares was the most memorable in the show’s history, and after an onslaught of online hate mail and death threats directed towards the couple it was revealed that Amy is a convicted felon, Samy is currently facing deportation, the restaurant had a history of Health Department violations and business continues to fail — making them reality TV gold.
“Right now their agent is just looking out for them to make sure they get the best deal, so they want to wait on signing with Cineflix to make sure they’ve seen all the deals on the table,” the source told Radar.
“But no doubt, you will be seeing Amy and Samy on TV again sometime in the future. They need to generate money and publicity to keep their business going, otherwise customers just dropping in because of their Kitchen Nightmares appearance will fizzle and their restaurant will go under.”
The Scottsdale, Ariz. restaurant had a grand re-opening earlier this month that drew a crowd of onlookers eager to meet the kooky couple, but as Radar exclusively reported on Tuesday, it seems they haven’t changed much in terms of customer service.
“Never mind the slow, inexperienced staff, the tense atmosphere in the restaurant and the empty tables which made me wonder where the publicized 1,000 reservations were on a Friday night,” journalist Hayley Ringlewrote in the Phoenix Business Journal.
“There were bugs in one of our drinks. Well, three actually.
What do you think about Amy and Samy having their own reality TV show — would you watch?
