What's the goo you're using there?
Not quite but not a million miles away. Only one guess each btw!
That's just toilet roll and watered down PVA glue, easy to lay your hands on and easy to work with, perfect for this competition.

Ahh, fair enough. Does the job, and would be thrown away by most people (although it would likely be "soiled" by then ).

Haha, yeh it's more of a repurposing than recycling! That'd be so very wrong!
I'm not sure what to give the person who gets my question right, any thoughts? Maybe some control over what my next picture update will be or what project I'll update next? Meh, not sure...

Much more universal, matey. Interesting that there was so much Eldar/magic talk though, it must have been the stepped layers of card or something.

Haha, I love the chaos and confusion! Doesn't look like anyone's going to get it so I'll reveal that the 3 main terrain elements are... A house/building, a blast crater annnd a barricade!
The idea is that this stuff is all pretty standard and won't look out of place in any setting. I'm designing it around the idea that a civilian resistance are 'making do' with what they have available to them to set up a defensive position outside an important building. The building might be a HQ or they might just be using it for covered passage to another area. This means that this is also a perfect objective if you want to use it like that.
So the story reflects the purpose of building the piece as well which I really like. I'm calling it 'Make Do and Mend' which was a British WWII propaganda slogan. I admit that this is a very WWII inspired piece, I'm taking leads from Band of Brothers and Enemy on the Gate, but my main focus is that this should fit into absolutely any universe.
I'm quite busy right now but I'll try and get together some kind of image update for you before the day is out. Any requests?

It's definitely something I'm considering if I have time. The place I want to put a flag isn't in the current design but I might try and add it in if I can get the rest finished in the next day or two. Did someone say sniper nest in the belfry?

Sorry about my absence, just having one of those weeks, well, months. Couldn't even get into my competition entry so i'm a bit behind but determined to finish it now. At least when I'm carving planks of wood I can induldge in a little bit of that hobby zen and relax.

Haha, I'm glad! Well the 'statue' might be a bit of a red herring, ''plinth' is more accurate. I may be behind but who am I to deny a man a belfry? ...Well, how about a clocktower?
Another visual teaser to tide you over:
Thanks for bearing with me!

Every piece of wood individually textured on both sides and then covered up completely at the next stage. I must be mental!
It's a first class ticket to hobby nirvana though.

Thanks guys! It's no sprue wood but if you'd like to see a tutorial I'd be happy to knock one together.
Got another little droplet of water for the desert that is my blog!
It's a few of the cut outs for the building. There are boards to cover the building frame and sheets to simulate plaster and roughcast. There are also some floorboards which are thinner versions of the planks I made for the frame.
Take care!

A tutorial "wood" be cool when you have a chance.
Remember, time is a-ticking. You still have to get paint on this
Look forward to seeing it complete.

Thanks weets! It's a material I had overlooked until now but it's actually perfect for so many jobs and can stand in for plasticard really well. This thing fell almost 2 foot and just two loosely attached planks came off from the outer edge, it's solid stuff. Viktor von Domm wrote:i lurk.... i lurk continuisly for i hope... i hope of not being continuisly teased....ach.... such malady!!!!
Not much longer! Dr H wrote:A tutorial "wood" be cool when you have a chance.

Hah! I'll put together a full tutorial when I'm done, I've being taking pictures for it as I go. I'll make sure I cover the wood technique.
Your "time is a-ticking" comment will be funnier when I show the finished piece. It's also very true though, I'm really behind my original target but I'm certain I'll be finished in time. It's possibly another lesson for me in time management, something I'll remember in time for the next competition I enter. I strongly doubt I'll manage Panda and Ruglud's comp now but if I finish early I might slap something together at the last minute.
Things are moving at a brilliant pace today! Could be painting tomorrow! But what's this?
Thanks for looking!

Thanks, matey! And some carpet on the other side of the wall! Viktor von Domm wrote:so... time... time seems a central item in that piece?.... have you made a ruined clocktower then?...
Indeed I have, sir! But more than that... I'll reveal that secret tomorrow!
Right the cheap superglue fumes are effing me up now, time for bed gents! I've also discovered that the pva/water/tissue combo has contracted up with enough strength to bend the base. It's actually quite a big change but It's something I'm confident I can fix during the last phase anyway so it's all good.

A working clock? Could be!
...It is.
The clock took a lot of work actually, much more than expected. Gluing down the last of the stuff and priming will have to wait until tomorrow now. That gives me 2+ days to paint which is enough as I have no plans, I can throw all of my time at it.
Thanks for your time!

it is not an actual working clock, now is it? but if you had kept the dial to be turnable it would have made a great looking device to tell which turn it is...
and good looking clock it is, by the way
I hope you can cope with the warping...that is always a very bad thing to happen...

It is indeed a working clock. In the theme of the competition I recycled the innards of a watch that was destined for the bin. I'd take a video for proof but the second hand has been removed, since most clock towers don't have them, which obviously makes it difficult to tell it's working in a short space of time.
Now I'm off to tidy up the cut off side so it's all smooth for display.
