Doing up some Sons of Orar, that is why I am asking.

A tutorial would be nice and probably help others greatly.

Sons of Orar you say? Yeah, I would say your best bet is hazard stripes on the Chainswords and Powerfists, the fake-gold effect for the chest eagle and maybe some red and white checks on the pauldrons or kneepads. If you want to go all in, then green bases and maybe do something crazy colorful like bright yellow for the bolter casings.

The Ultras Combat Squad is looking wicked.

The group shot also speaks volumes about your skills.

Great work! The whole project has a real 90's vibe to it. I enjoy the checkerboards on the Rhino. A great way to add detail.

I love those little moments between the first kiss and the pepper spray...

Really, really nice painting! This is how Space Marines look best - not because the grittier modern style is inferior - just that the clean, crisp & bright retro colours really pop on the table. Keep up the awesome work!

Brushcommando my man! Sorry for not stumbling through your blog earlier. Just read through from start to finish and what a blast i've had! Always loved the retro Ultra style, but I was always too daunted to face painting the yellows, especially on something as intricate as a chest eagle :0

The Salamander looks nice - really captured a simple yet effective scheme on them, plus the freehand spices it up a great amount. I'd love to see some freehand flames on things like the legs and entirety of the shoulder pouldrons, but don't let me encroach on your vision, whatever you choose to do, 5 BaC sets finished up would look astonishing regardless

You're doing great justice to the boys of Macragge, and some personal highlights of mine are your rhino checkered freehands - I was certain they were transfers at first glance, truly incredible. Also the PP/PF BaC sergeant, the colour scheme looks sublime on him and he really shines. And of course the army shot and shout out made my day

Consider me subbed for the future, love your style, and love seeing a fellow ultramarines man!

Wow guys. Thanks for all the responses!
@LDP I'm glad you're liking the blog. I'm pretty sure it was reading your Ultramarines blog that made me want to restart this one after initially abandoning it.

So I've decided to throw my hat in the ring for the dakka monthly painting challenge. I was torn between contemptors or the Salamander combat squad so in my typical fashion I've decided to do something else entirely.
Blood Angels Devastators.

To be fair, I've wanted to start these guys for a while, and the challenge is as good an excuse as any.
cheers

@mymearan: Thanks!

I didn't have much to do last night, so I put on some netflix and started slapping paint on the Blood Angels. Got most of the big stuff knocked out. Mostly just need to decide what to do with the ML... it;s hard to get a good shot of what they used to look like, so I'm going to be doing some guesswork and improvisation. I'm thinking Metal with black trim and maybe black and white checks.

Might get another WIP shot up today, but that's all for now.
cheers

Yes dude. I felt bad about changing my avatar, as it is the best one I've had. And no worries dude. You keep doing what you're doing, and I'll provide the 'wow','awesome' and 'good job' comments!

So I was able to get more painting done today. Got all the Devestators up to flat base colors and then finished the sgt. Here he is:

I finally think I've decided how to go about painting the missile launcher troops so they shouldn't be too far behind. Cheers

Looking good!

Quick question, is warboss green the same as the original goblin green? I had someone offer me original pots but, someone else said that I should use a new paint.

@stormwall. Honestly, I think they are very slightly different. I feel like Goblin green was a tad more yellow, and warboss green has a tad more blue. Not entirely certain though -- my original goblin green paint dried out and I was using the warboss green. Vallejo and Army painter also have goblin green-surrogates so you have a couple options. I've also seen bases from that era done in a slightly less bright green (camo green/ loren forest maybe?)

Nice! He looks lovely. The paintjob really fits the retro style of the mini, as you always manage to do. You're making great progress on this squad, will have finished your comp entry in no time!

@stormwall: hey let me know when you've knocked out your first retro model. I can't wait to see what you come up with.
@LDP. Thanks, man. I've been really enjoying painting this squad, lol. I'm halfway done and I'm not even listed amongst the entrants yet. I'll have pics of the finished ml guys up later today.

As promised, here are the first two milssile launcher dudes. I'm going to try to do something different with each ML so the squad doesn't have redundant looking models, which is more than I can say for the poor "ablative wound" marines needed to flesh out the squad.

And now they're photobombing the sarge...

I hope to have the squad finished by this Sunday so I can move on to something else. cheers.

Okay, so those last two Blood Angels Devastators are coming along, but I hit a little bit of painter's block. (That's a thing, I swear.) So I decided to start work on this guy instead.

I was reading codex: Armageddon, and realized that I am painting all of the chapters that took part in the 2nd war for Armageddon (and some which fought in the third...) and I was sitting on a couple IG tanks so I decided to give it a go with the classic steel legion scheme. I was also able to liquidate some of my Dust Tactics miniatures to raise enough funds to buy matching infantry, so they will likely make an appearance here in the future.

Scheme came out quite nice. I never could get the Steel Legion camo stripes just right. Red and white stripes really pop and add that extra touch.

Very nice. Agree with the above post, the stripes really make it pop.

Excellent stuff! Will the Steel Legion be getting a similarly retro scheme?

Thanks guys.

@Paradigm: I don't know if it counts as retro, but I'm going for the look they have in codex: Armageddon. It was a bright mustard yellow tunic with paints and helmet in a sort of green-grey. At any rate, it's the earliest scheme I've ever seen them painted in, so I guess it's their "retro" even if GW has never felt the need to update it.

Oooh nice! That's a solid paintjob. Looks like the old editions of the IG codex paintjobs - so achieving your goals I suppose

Sooooo.... my painting pace has slowed considerably this week. Been on an assembly binge instead. I do have my Painting Comp entry almost done...

I've also been working on some new stuff:

I would love some critical feedback on these. For the genestealer I've used a drybrushing technique and I'm not certain it looks retro enough (although it is certainly unfinished) for the black templar, I've decided "less is more" with the highlighting and relied solely on the color of the base to tie it to the retro theme. Again, would love to hear what you all think.
cheers.

In terms of scheme the genestealer certainly looks retro - perhaps a layering paintjob could achieve a cleaner result? Will have to see the finished product I suppose - its always a surprise how different stuff looks when its done opposed to WIP - and I usually find the difference is positive

Okay, so I've been gone for a few months and painting progress has been slow, but I recently started back up with some work on both my blood angels and ultramarines.
For starters, I've managed to acquire one of the old metal/plastic hybrid tactical squads to go along with one of the 2nd ed plastic squads from the starter kit.

I've also started a little work on a modern tactical squad I'm painting up for the 3rd Company.

Well that's it. Just wanted to post a quick update as to what I've been up to.
Cheers.
