i went with Captain/Chapter Master, but of course we are actually called Wolf Lords...

i am not a very good follower, but have no hesitation to lead...
if nobody wants to follow, that's fine, because i am charging in anyway...
that's why i love surfing big waves, it is dangerous, exhilarating, and doesn't require anyone's agreement, just me (and balls of steel) facing off against a powerful elemental force...
plus, i've got the hair and beard of a proper Wolf Lord...

cheers
jah

Wolf Guard. Nice equipment, and your battlefield role can change constantly. On a bike, jump pack, leading a squad, TDA and so on for variety. Plus being a Space Wolf means you have fun (killing stuff and/or drinking and feasting), whereas other marines are so somber and boring. And pet wolves.

Venerable Dreadnought. I only have to fight once every dozen years, im one of the most respected members of the chapter, and should i fall the general mass would fight all the harder to see me reclaimed. Its as close to being a rockstar as the Space Marines have.

You're forgetting the downside to being a Space Wolf. Your Canis Helix implant could go haywire at any time and turn you into a Wulfen.

When i was 19 and I joined the RM I would definately have said a Vanguard or Sternguard Veteran or something chad.

Ten years of wars later, I have realized that you get no rewards for putting yourself at the front, its not like they pay you anything extra. All you get is fethed kneecaps, back problems and dead comrades.

I would like to be a techmarine and stay so far in the rear fixing vehicles I would have to send my laundry forwards to have the chapter serfs wash it.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Again, there is no such thing as a space marine that isn't on the frontlines that isn't the naval captain.

And the same way that SoB are perfectly capable of succumbing to fear so great that it cripples their ability to strike back, something that would not even bother Marines, and are equally likely to break into a panicked rout, making them easy prey to cut down, and removing every thought of rallying from their minds. (Which is something that would not happen with Marines, either.)

Eeeh, the "and they shall feel no fear" line is just macho crap, not something that is reflected in the lore.

Marines feel fear, they just react differently.

Fear is not irrational; being afraid of being cut up by a genestealer motivates a fighter to dodge, block, or parry the genestealer's rending blades. If one had no fear of the consequences of being cut up by a genestealer, one would not bother to stop it to begin with. Fear allows one to recognize a potential ambush, or understand a dangerous foe's threat level.

There is a distinct difference between rational fear and irrational fear; marines generally have the latter beat out of them through training and hypnotherapy (though not always successfully, and the ones that don't often turn to Chaos eventually). There's also a distinct difference between rational reaction to fear, and irrational reaction to fear. Ideally, marines have the former trained in to them so that they instinctively use it over the latter from the standpoint of their organization.

While yes, it's a video game, but Dawn of War 2 comes to mind. The veteran Scout sergeant Cyrus rationally warned his team about the dangers of the Tyranid hive fleet and how it could overwhelm the chapter. His teammates mocked him for being afraid, and in a fit of machismo pique, he shouted "I know no fear, Avitus!". But his words expressed a very rational fear of Tyranids and their capabilities, because taking a tyranid invasion seriously is quite important to defeating it.

There is no innocence. Only differing levels of guilt.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
