Three tanks for heavy support and the such. Also the introduction of such high toughness monstrous and gargantuan creatures means flashlight do even worse now. I don't know could go anyway.
on the other hand there have also been some other changes made that IG could benifit from. tank squadrons in codex Space Marine aren't JUST squadrons. they're almost mini formations that give you a perk if you have a full squadron. I suspect the true "king of the treads" codex is gonna be whomever comes ahead there.
but yeah right now codex space Marines is a VERY VERY real challanger to the IG's vehicle dominance. one codex turned C: SMs from being a lack luster 'dex for an army list, into a contender. I mean the predator has never been a bad Battletank. and now it can compete pretty well.
Honestly, when you deck a predator out with lascanons for tank killing duty, it's more or less on par with a kitted out LR vanquisher points wise. it'd be an intreasting match up.

* by random I mean Khorne. It's always Khorne.
I do agree that for the foreseeable future, the above is true - Formations themselves are here to stay, though their individual power levels will as we've already seen, go all over the map...
The pessimist in me however is expecting the following to happen;
- Tau, Deathwatch, IG, and Orks will get their books and enjoy the current flavour of Decurion love. Orks will be the lower end of the Decurion spectrum, but like they currently are, they'll be solidly mid level and with the right lists, able to hang around near the big boys.
- Chaos Marines, Daemons & Tyranids will be the test beds for the 'new styled' Formations, where unit sizes & even equipment loadouts will be pre-decided for you, because... "reasons".
The rules for the formations themselves will be decidedly lackluster, and all three books will stay well back of the pack.
- SW's & BA's will be the first to scrap the fecal experiment and go back to the super fluffy formation with devastatingly good bonuses.
As a Chaos player, I guess I should be grateful for the brief, almost 2 years of solid power that my Daemons enjoyed? Then it's back to being everyone's punching bag like we were for the previous 5 years...

I'm still praying to the emperor for some Russ buffs / formations.
I'd die on the inside if IG went to the scrapheap. I'm planning to stick to 7th when GW moves onto 8th.

The better question is, which codex will be the LAST toned down codex, thereby relegated to nerfdom for 2+ years?
Answer: Whichever faction I decide to play!!

It will be Chaos Space Marines. Because GW will give all the cool toys to the armies focused on specific Chaos gods (like the recent Khorne book and possible Tzeentch, Slaanesh, and Nurgle books to come), leaving anyone who wants to play regular Chaos Marines as second string. Just look at the recent Blood Angels and Dark Angels books. The books are set up so you can only use them for Blood Angels (well, a small bone of a special character thrown to the Flesh Tearers) and Dark Angels. But, want to play a successor chapter? No, no chapter masters for you, no company master on a bike for you, etc. The same will happen to Chaos Marines. No Iron Warriors for you, no Word Bearers for you, etc. Bland will be the name of the game with a new Chaos Space Marine book.

Formation: Helbutchers.
Take eight units of three Mutilators and receive +1ld to all warptalons in the army.
Formation: Axe of Khorne.
Take five units of Khorne Berserkers and get all chain axes for 9 pts instead of 10.
Formation: Nurgle's Rot.
Take five units of Nurgle Marines, each led by a named Nurgle champion and receive two chaos spawn for free.
Fomation: Warpfires of Tzeentch.
Use three Maulerfiends and four units of Tzeentch Marines and add 5+pts to all Tzeentch Marines.

Seriously, back in 5th, the likes of 2++ re-rollables were the realm of comedic hyperbole. Same thing for super heavy vehicles in normal games and the likes of invisibility. Take that power shift, and apply it to what we have now. It sounds ridiculous, but it could just as easily happen.
Hell, for all we know, there won't be point costs for units in the next edition, just a bunch of formations.
Exalted for historic truth.

I can't see them debuffing Orks. They took a lot away from the last one, and it's quite tame comparatively already (save a few items). Any more tame, there won't be anything left in it!
Tau? Maybe. They've always been the main gripe before the big hitters landed this year.

CSM... because GW can't think of a way to make CSM work with all the different flavors... in the absence of that cohesive vision for chaos GW can only continue having C:CSM represent all flavors by representing none of them. Nothing ever as powerful as what's in Daemonkin will be done for them.

Making Tau better actually makes them worse, he's right...

I argue tau will lose group overwatch, or if they retain it they will be forced to use a formation flow chart that requires taking units like kroot and maybe skyrays and devilfish.
I'm also thinkin the riptide will move to lord of war along with farsight too. They may even invalidate farsight enclave.
I think your going to see tau get the shaft pretty hard
Chaos marines, daemons, orks, guard, dark eldar, and space wolves will have a lateral move or will only get better. A new blood Angels codex is easily a year + away they aren't getting a new book anytime soon. I also believe that if any army will truly show the potential of the formation flow charts it's going to be guardsmen.

Why are we assuming that there will be an all-strong then all-weak pattern? Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus aren't in the same league as the other recent books.
