For the longest time I played with mostly unpainted or partially painted because it takes me forever to paint. Now my IG are almost done so for the first time I will have a fully painted army!

I am taking a different approach when I start my 30k Imperial Fists in that I will only buy a new squad after I finish the one before it. I probably won't be playing 30k for a long time...

Same thing to what I said above^ it will be great when it's finished.

I adopted that rule a few years ago too. I'll only buy something if I finish the previous unit. Saves money too.

Painted all the way.

I've never fielded an unpainted model on the table and never will.
No matter the game. 100s of minis needed or a handful.

They don't have to be GD winning paintjobs (and knowing me, won't be), but they WILL be at least the old "three colour standard" (undercoat, basecoat, highlights included) with minimal basing for the most part.

I don't play with a model unless its painted and based. That's just how I was introduced to the game. There used to be a dude in our group who would complain about it, but other than that, it's the norm for everyone I play against.

Painted models do better too. I used to roll terrible armour saves with my CSM. Now that they're painted, I've had games where they simply refuse to lose more than 2 or 3 marines a turn.
Yeah! It's well established science that painted models get better dice rolls
I have also seen the well established science that the freshly finished painted models die like dogs in their first game and are fine in following games.

If you paint 1 model exceptionally well. People will notice and think.

Oh, hahahahaha.

Just to be funny mean to one of my guy friends, I used a precision shot from some Rangers and instead of targeting a heavy weapon, I put the wound on a fully painted model. Hahahaha we all bought it was funny.

Smart choice, no way you'd want to deal with those painted model saves!

I like using painted models, and even after 40 troops in two weeks painted to my tabletop standard (basecoat, wash, 2 highlights) I am still hyped to finish painting my guardsmen.

however, my gaming community is not nearly like that, and I would not be able to play a game if I had standards on my opponents models.

In all reality, paint your freakin models, its not hard, and it looks so much cooler, even if you are a slow as gak painter like me.

The dark behind the eyes.

My own armies are a mix of unpainted, base-coated, partially-painted and fully painted models. Also, since I've bought quite a lot of models second-hand, I have armies with several different paint schemes going on.

The biggest obstacle is that, with occasional exceptions, I just really hate painting.

Don't get me wrong - I certainly appreciate the visual appeal of a fully-painted army... just not enough to actually do it myself.

Also, even when I paint models, I never base them. Especially on a dark board, I find that black bases fade into the 'background' much more than elaborate ones. But, I could just be biased towards laziness here.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.

I don't really play, but I collect and model, and nobody really sees what I collect except for me or those that view what I share here. But the models must be painted, or be on the their way towards being finished. I wouldn't consider myself to be an accomplished painter, but I would hold myself to the challenge of putting out the best that I can do. I wouldn't hold anybody else to it though. What they bring to the table is what they bring to the table.

To my shame, I used to use unpainted miniatures. :( Now, I only use what I've painted. It means that I don't always get to use exactly the miniatures and units I might like; so be it. That'll teach me to stop spodding online and pick up the brushes.

Apart from anything else, I find it easier to identify and distinguish models on the tabletop when they're painted than when they're all silver or grey.

I used to have fully painted, but now I'm just painting as I can with my schedule. Working nights, usually when I like to paint, has slowed things down a lot.

That and I can spend a whole night in a scout... If even a sliver is painted outside the lines even on a scout, i have to fix.
