I've stopped even taking my models out of the box. Sure the footprint oft the battlewagon box isn't accactly the same as the mode but it will do. And when I've finished with the army it will still have the max resale value.

haha, nice.

But as to the original question, I try to have everything painted, but sometimes I just dont get around to it. I like to at least have a couple layers of paint on my models.

I think only a few times have I ever fielded a fully completed and painted army.

I can't field partially painted models - it's no paint at all or completely painted, decals applied, and varnished. None of this half-painted stuff. It just drives me nuts for some reason, especially when the unvarnished paint chips off.

I do my best to field fully painted and based models in my IG army. Unpainted and/or unbased just looks... Ugh.

I usually wont field a piece until it is fully done. I am currently working on a Vulture for my guard, and I wont field it until I get all the weapon choices magnetized (just a couple more guns to finish up). I did a few times field a couple of toons of "not quite done" for larger point games.
As for going against someone who isnt fully painted, thats ok. We had a league/ tourney that gave you extra points if your army was fully painted. I ALWAYS got the extra points.

I don't care all that much honestly, although I do prefer painted. I have far too many mini's to paint them all. Ever. That said my favorite army and all my 'signature' units are fully painted.

I like to get a game thats fully painted.

The below is an example of something thats had a game but is nowhere near finished (not a quick project)

We have a gaming space that bans unpainted armies. So if you wanna play you gotta paint. Not a painter? Tough luck.

I used to not bother painting at all. But lately I've been making an effort to at least have a model primed before I allow myself to use it in a battle.

I have a 90+% painted Ork Army. Whenever I play I generally only play with the models I have painted. however, sometimes Im forced to field the handful i have yet to paint but i honestly remove them first when I take casualties

I only ever play with painted things.... but that's because I have a painted army so I always have the choice to play with older painted models instead of newer unpainted ones.

When I first started (around 20 years ago now) I mostly played unpainted or partial painted. The local store didn't allow unpainted models, so when I was there I'd either field very small forces (because it's all I had painted) or borrowed the store armies.

But once I got enough painted to actually field an army (which took a couple of years mind you) then I limited myself to choosing from my painted models even if there were unpainted things I wanted to try.

But anyway.... maybe this topic needs to be made in to a poll, this discussion comes up every few weeks it seems and I'm just waiting for the usual suspects to come along and tell us how people who play unpainted are lazy, aren't true hobbyists and are selfish for wanting to play with their dirty unpainted models

I really have no issue with unpainted models. I can't exactly criticize them or even acknowledge them as anything other than just more miniatures, or else I risk alienating people.

And I would rather have some people enjoy playing me than play pretty games against people who despise me.

I try to only play with painted and based models; the exception right now is I have some 'gaunts just base coated......it can take awhile to grind through 70+ gribblies and i couldnt wait to field my tyranids with all my big stuff finished. I got maybe 25 left

having said that; since i moved to a new city for a job and have no friends while working nightshift, i basically stay up all night on my days off painting since there's not much else to do, so i get a lot done!

I think since May i've painted 1500 points of guard, 1000 points of blood angels, ~1600 points of nids, and then i repainted about 6000 points of necrons (added more colors to make them more than just a steel tide)

It takes me weeks just to finish a full unit of 6. I try to get all mine to a Steel Demon painting level though. Hahaha. I'm so slow.

Painted models do better too. I used to roll terrible armour saves with my CSM. Now that they're painted, I've had games where they simply refuse to lose more than 2 or 3 marines a turn.

For the longest time I played with mostly unpainted or partially painted because it takes me forever to paint. Now my IG are almost done so for the first time I will have a fully painted army!

I am taking a different approach when I start my 30k Imperial Fists in that I will only buy a new squad after I finish the one before it. I probably won't be playing 30k for a long time...

You should keep working on it. When the army is fully completed, it feels amazing.
