So, I have this weird thing about painted models on a table. I only play my models if they're fully painted and based. I don't know why I make myself do this, but I just feel better when everything of mine is looking great on the board. I don't mind what the other player does with their army. It just seems to be mine. I've seen a few people have models 3/4 assembles and fielded and it's a little dissapointing, but maybe they don't have time for it.
Anyway, What do you guys do regarding the painted/unpainted idea? I'm generally curious about the Dakka Dakka community.
Thanks guys.

I generally field mostly painted armies, but I have no problems plopping down primed models. I don't care if my opponent fields painted/unpainted, as it's a hobby and should be done at their leisure.
Never got the painted elitism lol, I'm just happy to get a game in

Same thing with me. As I said, I don't mind the opponent having non painted, a game is a game.

I prefer playing painted, but I will freely admit that I have a few tanks & vehicles that are still primed, or in various stages of being painted for my Vostroyan Guard.
I can say that all of my infantry that I usually field are painted however, which can be an accomplishment for a Guard player. (Though, I play Mech guard typically so less than your average horde guard player might boast about, but still upwards of 60 infantry).
Haven't had time to paint a lot lately, though hopefully this month will give me more wiggle room to pick up a brush and get some work done. We'll see.
As for playing against someone with unpainted models, I generally don't mind/care, so long as the models are mostly WYSIWYG or a reasonable analogue (I don't like assault marines being proxied as devastators or tacticals, for instance) then I'm all good.
Just my opinions on that. Take it easy for now.

For me, it feels wrong putting a grey or primed model on the table, so I only field painted miniatures (or at least base coated with three or four colours).
My opponent can have any level of finished-ness he/she wants. So long as I can roll some dice and have fun.
But I do like having two fully painted armies on the table for the epicness of it all.

Yeah, it's definitely a treat when my opponent has a fully painted army as well. I get the camera out way more often with 2 full painted armies going head to head.

I agree with you both. While I don't mind the other person not having painted armies, when we both do, it looks even better.
I had a moment once where we had the same base style (a blackish wasteland) and on a board with similar colours and theme.
It looked sooooooo good. Wish I took some pictures.

Minimum primary color but I try to get three color if I have time on everything. If its grey I wont use it, and generally not a fan of simply primered models.

If it’s not fully painted, it doesn’t hit the table. For my Ultramarines, I’m more forgiving of my Eldar, as they are still working up to a fieldable force.
N.B., I don’t consider basing as part of painting, but am endeavoring to get my army all on arctic bases.
And while I prefer to play against painted armies, I’m good for anything you want to throw down as long as I can get a game in.

I play with as many painted models as possible. The most I'll allow myself is a single unit, if they're new and I can't wait to get them on the table.
I greatly prefer my opponent to have a painted army, but I'll play against anything. I will encourage them to get stuff painted, though, as visual appeal is a big part of the game.

Tournaments? Bring the painted gak.
Pick up game: Try to bring the painted gak, and keep working on your unpainted stuff.
Also, be kind to people that haven't painted their gak yet. They might be new to the hobby. Don't be a dick.

I would love to have a painted army, but I don't care for painting at all. Obviously I suck at it lol, and I don't enjoy it. Neither do I have an eye for all the subtleties. A friend painted some of the relic (boardgame) busts and was going on about different shades and tones and to me it all just looked the same, other friends noticed though.
So all I do is convert stuff and MAYBE prime them, but even that's not a sure thing. The last time I touched a paint brush was for my sisters in 5th. But then the white dwarf codex hit and I now had an illegal jump pack cannoness converted and I totally lost any remnant of desire to paint.
At the same time it feels kinda wrong to have them painted by somebody else, so yea,,,,grey/green/primed legion it is. not to mention that getting them commissioned is super expensive and I obviously don't care enough to pay that much money.
The only time I see myself painting currently, is if I had some kind of cabinet and then build a purely scenic piece. I care more about playing game than the looks, but a scenic piece can't be played with so that would kind of force me.
And they're painted in my head when I make the lists lol.

I detest using unpainted models and very rarely do, I think in two games in two years I've fielded them. I love the satisfaction of a nicely painted army. As for opponent, it's their hobby so not my place to demand any level of paint work, as long as it is what it is and proxying is minimal/infrequent (I.e. Once in a while to try a unit before buying). It is always nice to play a fully painted army though, especially if it's well painted.

Me personally? Only painted models will be in my army. There may be an occasional game where I'll play with a model that's only been primed just to see how well it'd work with a specific formation or detachment before I dedicate the time to painting it before other things that are on my list to paint. Otherwise, my goal is to have all models that I play painted before they hit the play table.
That said, it does not bother me in the slightest if my opponent wants to play with models that haven't even been primed. Those are their models, and it's up to them how they want them to look on the play table.

No, really, occasionally a bunch of us go over a friend's place for a few games and some of us have fully painted armies. Looks really nice when set up. Makes the game 100x more fun.
Still, doesn't matter if people don't. They might just not like a painting whatsoever. Haha.

I just got back into the game, left during early 5th edition. And I try to play with only painted models. But with work, RL, and kids, my painting time is limited. That being said, I have no problems playing against peole who have unpainted models. I would like to see them progress, and for the most part in my group most people are very good about getting everything painted to tabletop standard.

I would think anyone who would say they prefer playing against unpainted models would be lying.
Where I am a bit of a dick is when I face models not fully assembled: models without the arms glued on is a particular pet peeve.
I prefer to have all mine at least "block painted" where colours are filled in and I may not have got into shading yet.
But mainly my playing armies are fully painted and some new unit may be a work in progress.
This has been a topic of debate and many are happy to point out the fascism of those who disrespect the unpainted models.
What is tiring is seeing no progress at all, that this person has no plans to get them painted, it detracts from the spectacle of it all.
My most telling beef with them not being made to look nice is that the uninitiated or possible new players just see some sad looking plastic being pushed around.
People are more than happy to point out the oddity or childishness of war gaming, why give them the ammo of it looking ugly too?
We deserve on our leisure time to have it look awesome.
You dress up a bit when going out right?
Why show up to game in the tired and torn stained track pants?
Same with your stuff, have some pride.
If a person intends not to try to spend at least some time to pretty up some models I would strongly suggest playing X-wing to get a taste of playing with good looking models and then look at your "grey legion" one more time.

I've stopped even taking my models out of the box. Sure the footprint oft the battlewagon box isn't accactly the same as the mode but it will do. And when I've finished with the army it will still have the max resale value.

I prefer to play with as many painted and finished models as possible. When I'm at home and everything is right there, I have no problem putting whatever on the table, especially since I've got so many half finished conversions laying around that are otherwise never going to see play.
Otherwise, I hate taking unfinished models to the store and generally only play with what is totally done.

I try to have all my models at least primed before I play with them. Because I strictly adhere to the "get it all painted before buying more" credo, I try to field as much of a painted army as I can. It's worked so far; I only have a few units left before my Eldar are all fully painted!
