For me its about the real chaos, the lost and the damned. Nothing screams chaos more than renegades and heretics. I started them using the old scavey necromunda models and after many years moved to the forgeworld renegade upgrade kits. My favorite army with so much character that can be played super fluffy and down right hardcore.

My top spot is Ravenwing/Deathwing. After that, it is the Sons of Dorn. Imperial Fists and Black Templars.

In terms of models I will keep - my RTB01 Space Marines. I haven't played them in years but have faithfully taken them with me every house move.

I painted up as the 'Souleaters' chapter. Very, very dark grey, red markings. I should just of done them as Dark Angels but I was worried about painting the Champter Badge.

I just feel very nostalgic about them as I played them pretty much exclusively throughout RT. Still have the original metal terminators from the box set. A couple of the original metal Dreads. Even if I gave up wargaming, I'd still keep these guys in their old shoebox.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many people mention Dark Eldar.

Although I haven't played 40K in two or three years I've hung on to both my True Kin and Tyranids as I loved both armies.

My Nurgle Chaos Space Marines.
Especially now that they also include a true Plague Marine contingent (with the original white-with-green-accents power armour).

Although my Imperial Guard Infantry comes in close second. I always did like that feel of a simple laser rifle with a lot of guts behind it. Times a couple of thousand (actually more like two expanded platoons, working on a third and planning the fourth...)

Space Wolves.

From Leman Russ being some kind of Imperial commander in RT to their 2nd edition release.

Bloodclaws have always been my favourite units and during my limited 40k playing time I will dust these guys off and send them on suicidal yet heroic missions so they have songs to sing and tales to tell.

My guys are also packed full of plasma weapons, I laugh in the face of gets hot!

Orks. They've been sitting there at "insanely easy to fix with the slightest bit of imagination but GW is so drop dead stupid they can't or won't" for multiple years now.

It's telling that of all the orks best units (tankbustas meganobs bikers Mek gunz and Deffcopta) exactly one is included in any formation.

And yet we have five formations of just flyers, and four that include the craptastic gorkanauts.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I thought I felt the same way, but after the latest Traitors Hate - no real rules updates, but 'buy a goddamn truckload of our models and you can have a gold star' style formations - it's wearing off fast...

Blood Angels.
First thing i ever bought for 40k was Mephiston, Angels of Death codex and 10 beaky devastators. Since 2nd ed I've had 10 different army's and I'm now down to 2. I also have an Eldar wraith army that I've been re-building since the new wraithguard came out. I like them but the BA would always be the one I keep.

Word Bearers (Horus Heresy). Spent alot of time and energy making up my own Chapter of the Word Bearers. Completely legal HH-wise, but I even have them named down to each unit's Sarge.

My other armies are Necrons and Tyranids. Both fun, but in a "nameless hordes" kind of way where it all feels a bit replaceable.

I'm waiting anxiously for the time that forgeworld adds more corrupted versions of the traitor legions. When/if that time comes I don't know what I'd be playing. I'm a Black Legion/Sons of horus player, but I looooooove the word bearer models. Even now it's hard to not to turn my back on horus and go with word bearers.

I like where GW is going lately, but it could take a long time before they do csm right. And even then, they're going to have a hard time competing with FW rules, which I generally prefer quite a bit.

If GW would care, they could just take the 30k-rules and modify them....

I've played the same two armies--well, a single, allied, army, I guess--since Rogue Trader: Utlramarines allied with Imperial Guard, along with an ever-growing Inquisition warband of 40k and Necromunda figures I thought were cool.

I now have a reinforced Battle Company of Ultras, and a Light Infantry Company of Guard, supported by numerous tanks.

Future plans involve adding 3 knights, a titan, mechanizing the Guard to make it a heavy mech Company (1st platoon almost done), and painting up Dreamforge Eisenkern as PDF elites in Inquisition service.

I can't bring myself to play Xenos or chaos. Maybe Orks but they don't have enough proper tanks to keep me happy. I might try Genestealer cult but as some sort of militia/genetic experiments thing to be thrown forward and grind away at the foe while my heavier guns and troops stay far enough away.

Chaos. Even if the rules are garbage, the fluff is still so hardcore. Also, they are a great excuse to shake things up when it comes to modeling and painting, as there's so many different unit types that there's no real reason to paint the entire army the same color.

My first army was Orks and despite how I loved em, I couldn't really afford to keep expanding the army as needed.

Ended up getting Skitarii/Cult Mech next, and after reading through their books, I think I love this army even more than I did Orks. The lot of models I have now is pretty sufficient (only needing a second box of Kastelan Robots). I absolutely am loving their fluff. Orks were great, don't get me wrong. But these spidery looking robot dudes are just too cool for me to ever drop now. Those Rustalker/Infiltrator models are simply flawless.

Chaos Space Marines - hands down my favorite army.

Though truth be told I like to run them with some Demons just for fluff purposes (when points allow for it)
