Hard to say as it varies quite a bit with the amounts and types of units in play. Larger units and those with high leadership, can take quite a bit of punishment while smaller, weaker units may take one or two pins before being shot off the table by some concentrated fire. I bought a huge bag of cheap red beads/markers from a craft store so I'll never run out mid-game, at least.

How goes your work with this conversion? My group has been getting closer to stock 8th rules, especially melee-wise compared to what we had going earlier with the mix of Antares and 5th ed 40K assault rules. The conversion has now become almost fully 8th ed with the Antares activation/reaction and terrain rules.

I just ordered 4 sets of these.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pyrkol-Blast-Markers-Marker-set-for-6mm-10mm-15mm-Epic-40k-Dropzone-Commander/112632191488?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

to use as pin markers. so 20 single pins and 8 3-pin markers. I am hoping that covers a good mix of armies for anyone I might play. (also they are really tiny, largest base being just about an inch wide).

I have a few people I get to play this version with occasionally and others that I have been teaching regular 40k to. I wanna get them used to the normal game before Im like "And now! House rules!".
It's mostly stuck to what I posted before with slight adjustments. The -2s did have to be adjusted into -1s. With pins and such it's too possible for things to stack too quickly. But I think your group has the right of it. 8th is actually a pretty solid game for the most part. It's just the turn structure thats so outdated and balls.

So is your group still using the pins?

Those are some nice markers. Looks like an order is in my near future.

Pins are still in, for sure. That command friction system of pins and leadership tests is a big element that we enjoy.

Okay, so I got a hold of an actual BtGoA rule book and I studied it a bunch. Here is an update on how I think the Terrain should work to adapt it to this project. Some of this will be similar/the same as what you have already Mithras but let me know what you think.

Also, I pulled the background images from the CA document. So I am going to organize this into an actual PDF full rules document soon with proper formatting and making it real easy to read. It will take me a bit to do but it will be much easier to read and share when done.

Spoiler:

Line of Sight Rules

You can trace Line of Sight from any part of your model to any part of the target unit. For the purpose of targeting I recommend using 7ths targeting rules (I.E. wings, antennae, banners) do not count as a part of the model, meaning you cannot draw los from or too these bits.

Targeting Occupied Terrain Occupied Terrain is any terrain that has a unit within the terrain feature. Units that occupy a Terrain feature can see and be seen through it. Units that Occupy Terrain gain Cover from the terrain. A unit is considered to be occupying the terrain if all of it's models bases are at least partially within the terrain or meet it's other requirements. Models that do not have a base must be at least 50% within the terrain to be considered to Occupy it.

Intervening Terrain Intervening terrain is any terrain that sits between you and the target unit but is not occupied by the target unit. You can trace LoS over a single piece of Light terrain. A second piece of Light terrain and/or dense terrain will block LoS normally. Targeting a unit over intervening Terrain confers a -1 to hit penalty.

High Ground If your unit is on a piece of raised terrain they may have high ground. A unit with high ground can ignore all terrain and los blocking terrain features when targetting units on a lower level so long as they can still actually trace line of sight to the unit. To repeat, you still need to be able to trace line of sight, but the target unit would gain no benefit from any intervening terrain.

Intervening Units If you cannot trace LoS to your target unit without tracing a line through an enemy unit the intervening unit counts as Light Terrain. That means if your target unit is behind both an enemy unit and a piece of Light terrain that unit is untargettable because your LoS is blocked (just like 2 pieces of light terrain).

Monsters, Vehicles, and Titanic When targeting any unit with the MONSTER or VEHICLE Keyword you ignore any intervening units when tracing Line of Sight treating them as Open Ground. When targeting any unit with the TITANIC keyword you ignore all intervening units and Light Terrain treating them as Open Ground. In addition treat all Dense Terrain as Light Terrain for the purpose of tracing LoS on TITANIC units.

Flier Units with the Flier battlefield role can be targetting freely treating all terrain as Open Ground so long as you can still trace Line of Sight.

Terrain

All terrain has 3 features.

1) Line of Sight
2) Cover
3) Difficulty

1] Line of Sight

There are 3 degrees of effect terrain has on LoS.

-Open Ground: No effect on LoS. This terrain piece can be shot over as though it was not there. Example: A water pool or river.

-Light: Blocks LoS to some extent. You can draw Line of Sight over a single piece of light terrain. A unit cannot draw LoS over 2 pieces of light terrain.

-Dense: Dense Terrain blocks LoS entirely.

Cover

All terrain has a cover value that is a bonus to your Sv roll (Ex. +1). This bonus is granted to any unit entirely within or meets the requirements of the terrain feature.

Difficulty

All terrain has a difficulty value. This value is a penalty to the Movement Value of any unit that enters or attempts to move through the terrain. It is possible the Difficulty of the terrain is a 0 meaning it does not impact movement at all. They may also have special considerations such as "Impassible to VEHICLES".

Also, I propose that Character Targeting is changed to make it so a character cannot be targeted with shooting if the character is not the closest unit and within 3" of another friendly unit. This way they need to maintain a semi unit coherency to keep their protection.

Any unit with Sniper Weapon/rules will also ignore intervening units when tracing LoS.

Thoughts?

Excellent work, Lance. Clear and concise. I like it. I'm on board with the character targetting rules, as well.

In our new quest to keep this conversion as similar as possible, break tests are out and the morale rules of 8th are in. Added to the end of turn as normal.

I assume thats so you cannot just pile pins onto a unit and wipe it out without killing a single model? heh

I got these dice the other day. I am now all set on dice. The one thing I didn't like was rolling big d12s. I fixed it.

50 with white 25 with red 25 with green.

Enough for everyone. I can even roll my 90 shot devilgaunt unit with one big handfull (or dice cup full. I got a dice cup while I was at it).

Also, I found this online shop.

https://www.thepracticeshoppe.com/products/polyhedral-blank-dice-mini-12-mm that will sell you mini d12s at .29 a piece. Random colors, but try contacting them to see if they will pick out colors for a large order.

Thanks for the dice link. They're going to let me know next week if their supplier can send a single colour or not.

The removal of break tests only applies to melee results and casualties from shooting in a single action. Put more pins on a unit than their Leadership stat and they're still kaput.

Could you post how you are currently playing under which conditions a unit gains a pin, when they take moral tests, etc etc....

I want to make sure the doc im making is up to date.

Pins are still gained as in the latest version posted.

The morale phase is done the same as in 8th, at the end of the turn, for all units that have suffered casualties.

As an aside, I wasn't able to order mini d12s in a single colour. Rats.
