Really? Why? I think they hold up just as well, with maybe the exception of the liver and fava bean line due to overexposure.

I think Feeder has it mostly. It's hard to watch Hopkins and not subconsciously compare his performance with decades of parodies, homages, and more subtle, compelling takes. His acting also seems a bit hammy by today's standards. If the role weren't so hyped and iconic, it wouldn't matter, but if you go into the film expecting one of the greatest cinematic villains of all time you're likely in for some disappointment.

I don't know if the Fly or the Fly 2 count, but they are both worth watching. The Fly 2 isn't as good overall, but that final comeuppance... Worth it.

Is that a Scream2 reference?

If it WAS a Scream2 reference, it was on accident. I haven't seen a whole Scream movie all the way through. I meant the ACTING in Showgirl is terrifying, and not even my infatuation with Elizabeth Berkley can get me to overlook it.

Mmmm, I can understand that. Thankfully I seem to be able to detach my brain from the homages and parodies etc. which have followed the film and just watch it as if it were still new.

I enjoyed it well enough, but I feel the cinematography is what's letting it down all these years on.

You know how you watch an old Rex Harrison or what have you? You can tell it's a good film of it's time - but also that the craft has really moved on and improved.

Probably my favourite is The Shining. Hellraiser, Bad Taste, Event Horizon, Lost Highway, Cabin in the Woods and Virus are up there too.

Please tell me you mean The Shining with Steven Webber as the main character. The 4 and a half hour version. The one that didnt literally take the names and locale from the book, and absolutely nothing else. You know: the one that had ALL good actors, instead of the one that JUST had Jack Nicholson putting on a good performance.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Pandorum is a great movie with a bit of an Event Horizon feel.

No I mean the one

I've not read the book, so can't complain how far from it the film goes, nor have I seen the 4 and a half hour version so can't compare. But I like the film I have seen and enjoy it greatly for what it is.

Watched Victor Crowley last night.
A low-budget slasher (apparently part of a series) that doesn't take itself at all seriously, but has a good amount of gore and some really funny moments. I'd definitely recommend it.

Oh, and Laura Ortiz is in it

In terms of Stephen King adaptations, I quite enjoyed Rose Red. The central conceit of the film is pretty interesting.

Rose Red is was inspired by the same mansion as Winchester, Sadly, the Winchester Mystery House is less haunted and more of an example of what someone who is deeply troubled can do with a lot of money.

Frazzled: Did Winchester lean into the cheesy 70s/80s horror look that the previews give it?

Have any of you seen Dude Bro Party Massacre III?

I liked it. It's a send up of 80s slasher flicks, gender swapped. I really thought it was going to run out of steam before the end, but it kept me laughing the whole time.

Yea me too! Love that movie. Ill usually watch that one then follow it up with From Hell. I seem to like both equally as they both give that dark ominous vibe.

In the Mouth of Madness is a really good flick too. I watched it because of the HP Lovecraft inspirations. Then I watched some youtube vids on its background and plot points and such and learned there was so much more to the movie. Watched it a second time knowing what the look for and ask myself. It was sooo much better the second time around

And in 2016 they found a new room that had been shut off after the earthquake that destroyed the top floor. Complete with furnishings and accoutrements- quite the time capsule!

Let us know how the tour is if you end up going! I have always found the story interesting, but very sad as it is basically a literal wall she built around herself after the death of her child and husband. It's the same problem I have whenever I see historic sites- I love the history but thinking about the human cost is always sobering.

Got to put another shout out for the really genuinely brilliant 'Scare Stiff' from the BBC.

Kids programme, but every bit as solid as stuff like Tales From The Crypt.

Keeping this to less than ten will be impossible, it changes day to day.

In the Mouth of Madness (My favourite Carpenter film, and I'll lap up anything by him)
Event Horizon
Candyman
Videodrome (and most of Cronenberg's films)
The Wicker Man (original)
Re-Animator
Evil Dead trilogy
It Follows
The Wailing (shockingly great Korean folk horror which touches on so styles and tropes, and pulls so many rugs out from under you)
Hellraiser
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 (so wrong and yet so right)
Nightmare on Elm Street 3
Alien

You know what else was good? The original Jeepers Creepers. The first one was a scary horror flick where the good guys just lose. It was creepy (pun intended). Then they made 2. And it sucked by comparison. And the third (which just came out, I believe) was a floating pile of dog vomit in a river of alligator piss.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Is Warlock the one with Julian Sands? I know I've seen it, but every time I try to picture it, my brain brings up Doctor Mordred instead.

Yes Julian Sands.

Do comedy/horrors count here? If so I’d say Bubba Ho-tep and the ‘Burbs.

For those of you out there who are partial to a bit of Lovecraft, I recently saw 2 films worth a watch.

First is a film called The Void (from i think last year), about weird goings on at a hospital, low budget, but very well acted and the kind of practical effects you`d get in 80's movies like "Reanimator" While not directly a Lovecraft adaption, it's influences are plain. One of the better modern horrors I've seen recently.

Secondly, I had the opportunity to see the HP Lovecraft Appreciation Society's adaptation of "The Whisperer In Darkness". As with "The Call of Cthulhu" its a black and white period piece that takes the original short story and develops it quite a bit. Superb cinematography, great acting and a truly Lovecraftian feel of hopelessness and dread ( and pretty well realised Mi-Go too)....probably because Sandy Petersen, who was one of the creators of the rpg was involved (or else its someone with a very appropriate name If you like Lovecraft, see this film!!!

The Void is pretty solid. Much like Cube, and other favourites of mine, at no point does the audience know more than the cast. That’s a nice touch that’s often lost in gorefests and what have you. Just creates that extra level of investment (nowt wrong with Gorefests though!)

I love that The 'Burbs flat out stole Gremilns 2's score at the end.

Thanks for both heads ups! I had their Call of Cthulhu, which is great, but forgot they were making Whisperer in Darkness. Now I have to get it.

And for horror comedies, Night of the Creeps is a classic. "Thrill me."
