Yeah I dunno if I'd ever put the 3rd Ed Scorps on that list. Even putting aside Mr. I'm-Grabbing-My-Ankle, those were models with a poor centre of gravity that toppled pretty easily. For Scorps it's got to be the OG 2nd Ed ones, or the chunkier current ones.
Truth be told, the 3rd Ed Aspect Warrior redesigns went away from Jes' original designs, so much so that when they were redesigned again, they went back towards their 2nd Ed designs. I mean, compare the 3rd Ed Dark Reapers to the ones we have today. They're almost "AdMech Necrons" with their aesthetics, compared to the current ones that are far closer to the 2nd Ed designs.

The worst balance were the old metal Tyranid Hormagaunts - they were even worse than the scorpions.

Oh I know. I think I have around 12 of the original Hormagaunts (including some that were cast after the transition to white metal).
Those damned things do not stand up. They're awful.

The original Epic Hierophant biotitan is a way cooler design than its FW equivalent. If FW had designed their Hierophant to look like the Epic version, I would have had no choice but to buy it.

The FW Hierophant is strange - its basically got all its weapons and head really low down and then, for some reason, has thus VAST main body sticking up in the air above it. As if its at the same time trying to scuttle and remain low and yet also attract fire.
But its worst crime is that its so terribly unstable as a model. Most of the people I see who own one tend to put a big rod under the main body to actually hold the weight off the legs; then hide it with base detail. One or two I know have gone even further and braced the insides of the legs with brass rods.
I kinda get what they were going for, but I agree the design concept of the Epic ones were superior and if they'd been used might have worked out better; that said any biotitan at that scale in resin is going to be a challenge with regard to leg support

Yes wholeheartedly!
I would also nominate the metal RT MKIII Sgt with Chainsword & Plasma Pistol. I tried to recreate it with the new plastic kit but just couldn't recreate how imposing the stance is. For me, it would scream "come at me bro" to my buddy's endless waves of orks/gaunts that we had at our disposal back in the day. While I do love the new plastics, my veteran Sgt of many xenos cleansings just screams 40k to me.

Here you go:
Left is the current plastic model with talons and wings, to the right you have the metal 40k prince with extra wings. Those are from the metal blood thirster I think, but no real clue. Were sold as "metal daemon wings".
If you consider that the new model is standing upright and the old one is bend forward, they are pretty much the same size.

Those are Bloodthirster wings. Holy crap!
I bet that model falls apart if you even look at it...
[EDIT]: Somehow I managed to not finish typing the above sentence, leaving out a whole word. My bad!

Nope, solid as a rock, can even stand on slopes up to roughly 30°, on more angled surfaces he starts sliding down because of his weight. I had to redo the pinning once in order to get a balanced posture, but now the weight of the prince is sufficient to hold the wings. It takes six 2x3mm magnets to hold him in place in the storage/transport box though

I'm just going to quote other people here as there have been so many good suggestions!
I agree about the original Rogue Trader terminators. Was looking at them and comparing to the 2nd edition models that came out in the 90s and they definitely lost something. I'm not sure if its just the much more static sculpts, even though they are more imposing looking, but the originals are a lot more dynamic and have really nice flowing edges to them.
Sim-Life wrote:Choose a Diaz sculpt. Literally any one.
Yes for sure - still remember that Dark Eldar release with his sculpts in, absolutely astonishing.
Bobthehero wrote:The metal Stormtroopers. Better than the Kasrkins, imo.
Do you mean the original guys with the hoods, and some of them with the asymmetrical eye lenses on their helmets?
If so, those were my favourites too.
Sarigar wrote:These hooked me when WD 127 was released. I still play Eldar to this day and these sculpts were the definitive Goodwin design.
Absolutely - think those miniatures are possibly some of the few that still stand up well (and in some cases are actually better) than the newer versions. I am sure them being so good is at least part of why you have had so few attempts over the years to update the Eldar miniatures, certainly compared to other ranges, it must be really intimidating for any sculptor!

I am so mad at myself. I recently cleaned up and primed an old RT metal beaky Space Marine, but tossed him in the recycling bin by accident.
Beaky marines were my first look at Warhammer. I was planning on using that particular model as a display piece.

God, the plastic Daemon Prince really is laughably bad, isn't it?
My nominee for this is the metal Ork Warboss (either variant – Attack Squig/helmet or Big Choppa) that was introduced in 3rd ed. Never bettered by any of the plastics that followed it, imo.

Thanks, I did not expect him to hold up that well in terms of scale. Yes, these are definitely bloodthirster wings – my first real hobby challenge as a teen. I ended up using two-component adhesive which made for a very messy yet firm connection

The old metal Gretchin. They've mostly copied them but something just feels off.
Same thing with the metal mega armoured nobz. The newer ones look like they're just standing there - not that the older ones were much better, but same as the old terminators, they got scaled up but it looks like they lost weight (which they did, but also in a metaphorical way).

The nice thing about the metal Gretchin is they mix well with the newer plastics, and the latter being more easily convertible means you can get a good mix of runtz in a mob.
Kind of agree on the Meganobz though – the variety of options on the plastic kit is nice, but the slight changes in the design make them look a bit more like a box with Ork arms stuck on the side rather than a suit built around an Ork, in my view.

Honourable mentions go to the 3rd edition Banshees and Reapers. They were my jam.
Beat me to it! My all time favorite model. I still have 2. It didn't need a fancy name like Carnifex. Nope. What's it do? It screams and kills. Sold. It's original description was something like.. "Picture a 3 story office buidling screaming and running at you with razor claws."
Every time I see that big guy I just well up inside. First model I put in the effort and to the point where I put on multiple layers of gloss varish on the claws, as recommended in White Dwarf. Ah, the good ol'days! Where have they gone?

‘What Lorgar’s fanatics have not seen is that these gods are nothing compared to the power and the majesty of the Machine-God. Already, members of our growing cult are using the grace of the Omnissiah – the true Omnissiah, not Terra’s false prophet – to harness the might of the warp. Geller fields, warp missiles, void shields, all these things you are familiar with. But their underlying principles can be turned to so much more. Through novel exploitations of these technologies we will gain mastery first over the energies of the empyrean, then over the lesser entities, until finally the very gods themselves will bend the knee and recognise the supremacy of the Machine-God"

These are an interesting one as there's not a "newer" Rat Ogre kit, but these are no longer available while the worse "main" kit, which predates IoB, is still around. Real shame there was never a full kit matching the IoB aesthetic.
