Why do you need to pay for detachments of gods?
You can mix differents god in 1 detachment right?

You can mix in detachments but you only get access to the god options if you have a detachment of only that god. Doesn't count Auxiliary Support, SHAD, or Fortification Detachments. The Undivided table has no restrictions other then playing only Deamons.

Having spent a day thinking on this I've come to a conclusion on how GW might be envisioning army building. Excluding the AoR, players either build Undivided in a single detachment or would build out small Detachments of pure gods to gain access to their Warpstorm options at the cost of CP. You can, of course, go mono-god but there is no real incentive for it which is why I said multiple detachments. They want you to play at least 2 gods.

If you take Bel'akor in a SupCom, you then gain access to all the god specific warpstorm. This helps alleviate the problem, but I admit I am a bit annoyed if I want access to those tables I'm forced to take Bel'akor or pure mono-god.

They gotta move those Belakor boxes somehow!

In this brave new world of all lesser daemon units having to be exactly ten strong (maximum chaos), do they all have to take a champion/standard bearer/musician?

Have to? No. But being free no reason not to.

Upgrades like that shouldn't be free...

It's a complete abdication of game design principles...

Actually, they do. Each unit contains 9 standard daemons and a champion, not 9-10/0-1. Just like you can't NOT take a sergeant in Marine squads.

Well yea champion but standard and musicant are "optional" . If you don't want(don't have models and need to be wysiwyg) leaving banner/musicant is legal.

It means we already pay the points for those things as it is baked into the base cost. Kinda lame but at the same time it is the type of auto-take upgrade I don't mind being baked in. To me it feels very different than the state of plague marines, tyranid warriors, guardsmen, etc where options that totally transform the unit's performance are treated as interchangeable. I would LIKE for music/icon to be an option that is reasonably balanced with not taking it but I do not trust GWs ability to manage that. In the current context getting rid of that potential for error means more to me than the ultimately very minor amount of customization lost.

Far more significant is the lock to 10 and only 10; 5-20 would have been a fair range to have with free music/icon unlocked at 10.

If it's baked in, then it shouldn't be an option.

On that I totally agree, it should just say those models exist and do xyz; making it 'optional' to forgo a free buff is just one more thing making the game a bit more confusing for newcomers. It may be small but there are a LOT of them.
