Halfway between nowhere and anarchy

Hey people,

I dropped the hobby a couple of months ago to do my gcses and I just had a look on the GW site: what happened to guard? Were they split into 3 factions or did they just get cut up and scattered into these space mariney type armies? What do I officially call my Saleran Guard, there must be loads of people with independant fluff do we just call them by their fluff name?

Sorry for my ignorance but I've got until September to catch up.

Thank you kindly, God bless the free planet of Saleran!

I beg to dream and differ from these hollow lies

Imperial Guard have been renamed to Astra Militarium - for reasons that are totally not just Copyright issues. This is the Codex for an 'Imperial Guard' army.

Militarium Tempestius are sort of a spin-off Codex - they are the re-named Stormtroopers and were given a standalone codex despite still appearing in the AM codex.

As for three factions? Did you mean Imperial Knights?

Most people just carry on calling them the Imperial Guard.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

This, they were broken into two disproportionate pieces and renamed in order to rake in money and to give people who wanted ig troopers as allies without all the useless bs in the ig codex needed yo field them

I'm willing to bet the next SM codex will be called Adeptus Astartes.

I wonder whether CSM will keep their name.

Given that the imperial knights were released like a month before ig, I doubt it. You cant get much more generic than'imperial knight'.

Splitting stormtroopers off was probably less a conspiracy against 40k players, and probably much more an excuse to publish some fluff and pretty pictures, and to provide the seed for an eventual full spinoff army.

@OP: The AM codex still refers to the army as Imperial Guard, so there's no change to your fluff. Once a Guardsmen, always a Guardsmen.

Halfway between nowhere and anarchy

When I said three factions I was assuming the one faction that had disappeared had been replaced by the three new ones (adepta sororitas, Astra millitarum and millitarum tempestus).

Now that I've had a chance to take a look I know that one is some kind of warrior priest cult, which sounds interesting but pretty limited fluff-wise. So the Astra militarum is the main IG.

Anyway, what's the taurox like? I was really looking for a model like this, something like the present British army transport. What's it like compared to the chimera?

I beg to dream and differ from these hollow lies

Adepta Sororitas is an entirely separate faction.

It's the "fluff" name of the Sisters of Battle, and they function as the armed forces of the Imperial Church as well as close allies of the Inquisition's Ordo Hereticus.

They've existed since first edition and have had four codices since second edition, they aren't new. Just neglected. They're older than Tau or Black Templars, for example.

I was just flicking though the site and didn't recognise the name is all, I know the sisters of battle but never took them for a serious faction, more a collectors army, like 100% Kroot.

Chimera is 10 points costlier now, and only has 2 fire points instead of 5, but it does have a lasgun array, i.e. 3 guys inside can fire a lasgun each, and you get to pick which flank, on top of the guys firing from the fire points.

Taurox is 15 points cheaper than the new Chimera cost, and comes with a built-in dozerblade special rule, so basically it would be 20 points cheaper than a chimera with a (new, reduced) dozerblade price.

However, it has 1 AV less at the front, but on the move it has better firepower than a Chimera, but of course isnt as flexible as a Chimera (which can stay back and fire with 2 HBs or kit itself out with 2 HFs for frontline duty)

@OP: If you're looking for a run-down on what's changed in the new codex, here's an article I wrote about the changes:

Should cover everything you missed on your break. Hope it helps.

There was no copyright infringement. GW changed the name to attempt to prevent other companies from manufacturing alternative miniatures and selling them as Imperial Guard, although I have never seen any actually called Imperial guard and it has no real effect in the real world. Basically the name change was unnecessary and utterly, utterly stupid.

They could have at least chosen a less lame new pseudo-latin name.

Oh, you poor fool.

Sisters are a serious faction, and if you ever play against them, you'll find out why~

I'm not a very good player, I'll admit that off the bat. But my Sisters are nigh undefeated.

Thanks Paradigm that really helped.

I don't mean to insult sisters, it's just that they've never come up as an army my people want to play. I only game with four others and mainly play against nids, orks, tau and chaos. People have talked about going for eldar and Necrons in the future but sisters have never come up. There's nobody else I'm the area who games.

If we're talking about armies we don't intend to collect and play as "not serious armies", I'd say Chaos Space Marines "aren't a serious army".

What's wrong with Asthma Militampon? It pretty adequately describes the speed of the army, and the current strength of its 5E power units (i.e., Hydras, Manticores, and Vendettas).

Then you haven't listened to the average CSM player on DakkaDakka then We recently had like a 12 page thread about them not being good enough in the General Discussion forum.

A general flyer based army, like cronair, is something I dread playing with my Sisters. The likes of Tau or Eldar/Dark Eldar combos are also hell on earth for them, but that's for many armies. Most of those have large quantities of S6+ shooting which instant-gibs are HQs and multiwound models and tears up our transports like no tomorrow, making it an uphill battle.

Ladies mainly rely on scouting dominions, exorcists, and large units of fearless bolter lasses, at least my army does.

Also St. Celestine, though sadly IIRC (I don't use her, I stubbonrly still use my canoness) she was nerfed.

I do use IG allies though, these days. Not much of a point of NOT doing so.
