I heard this was kind of a sideways update more than a buff or a nerf to any specific aspect, but the new mob rule is a bit... confusing for me. It seems like a more punishing version of the animosity table in Warhammer fantasy.

Silacier & Rozgarth: Hey you should start playing warmahords with us.
Me: OK (sets down Tyranid, drives to store and picks up Legion of Everblight)

Orks killing each other and running off is very cinematic.

Whelp, people were saying that we should wait for bat reps before calling the new Ork codex bad, and looking at this I'd say at least some of our fears are founded.

Good game, either way. Would have been nice to see Reese pull that win from the jaws of defeat.

LOL first Tyranids get the Nerf bat and now Orks get an unjustified nerf. The old mob rule worked just fine and now you just kill yourself.

More than once, Reece stated that he didn't understand why Mob Rules changed. So, let's ask Captain Obvious:

"The reason for the new Mob Rule is so you have to have far more ork models on the table ... so you'll *buy* more ork models."

'Malestorm' made me chuckle. I now have a new fear in life.

Great report fellas, honestly I think its too early to condemn the mob rule. Without out it, that game would have been a one sided blow out in fact. Then theres the fact that the marine list is actually a really strong counter to all those trucks and it still came out on top if not for a misplay.

Always loved the black dragons btw, I was squinting looking for the bony spikes they use in combat lol

"If a truck explodes you take a moral check and a pinning check"

No you don't?
Its just a pinning test.
You took twice as many tests as needed, no wonder you got hit that hard by the mob rules.

Not to mention you had no painboys, no armor or any other defensive upgrade to think of, it was the most straight-forward "get me more orks" list, and it preformed pretty well.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Great battle report as always and I can understand the frustration of mob rule. The fact that the black dragons pulled of the victory was realy amusing. I also have to agree with red corsair that a drop pod marine list with lots of melta is very efficient against trukks since they can so easily get those explode results for massed mob rule killing. Against other armies the trukk will mostly just get wrecked and you'll "only" have to take a pinning test.
One think that does not make sense howerever is why does mob rule have to be S4? Orks are S3 standard so if you want to "forge a narrative" at least for 4-6 on the chart the hits should be S3. This would also make the rule much more managable as well as making 4-6 an actual reward to roll compared to the lower ones.

@Boomwolf: You would have to take a moral test if the explosion caused enough casualties to the unit. Which for Orks would most of the time, now that we're taking str 4 explosions

So can people understand why telling players to wait for games to be played first before critisizing all over the codex is a silly idea. It is very easy to tell what is good and bad just by reading and thinking.

We said mob rule was stupid and unfair, we said trukk's ramshackle is bad but nooooooooooooo unless we play games with it our point is invalid.

Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Nekro, Shadowrun Returns, Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, Planetary Annihilation, Project Eternity, Distance, Dreamfall Chapters, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Consortium, Divinity: Original Sin, Smart Guys, Raging Heroes - The Toughest Girls of the Galaxy, Armikrog, Massive Chalice, Satellite Reign, Cthulhu Wars, Warmachine: Tactics, Game Loading: Rise Of The Indies, Indie Statik, Awesomenauts: Starstorm, Cosmic Star Heroine, THE LONG DARK, The Mandate, Stasis, Hand of Fate, Upcycled Machined Dice, Legend of Grimrock: The Series, Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, Cyberpunk Soundtracks, Darkest Dungeon, Starcrawlers

Except sometimes things work on paper yet fail in practice, or the other way around.
Sometimes first readings miss things. many things (like unit footprints, interactions, non-obvious comvinations) that are relevant does not jump to mind when reading through.

For example, when tau only came out, the general response over the MSSS and the CaNC is that they are lousy relics, given a few weeks and we got "buff suit" in a farsight bomb dropping jaws when you suddenly realize the same suit can take all the bufftools at once, and that it does not have to be an HQ, then a support commander running around making riptides insane comes up a bit later, dropping jaws further. in fact, the very same thing that was dismissed as pointless at the start, became a pivotal piece in the most powerful tau builds to come.

Yes, new ramshackle is a nerf, but the truck cost was dropped. yes, new mod rules hurt hordes of boys, but they actually help some units (I'll leave it to you to find out, I already spotted a few-practically anything that has low numbers and half-decent defense boosts that has a character involved, and any units that get into CC really quickly, and the units that does both...oh boy...) and at least now HQs and team leaders mean something in ork armies except just "the guy who punch better".

Here you see that reecius played a game, and despite sticking to the old ways, and playing against a list that is very solid and practically counters the orks-the orks did well.
And there are SO many things in the new codex that just screams "pick me" and he didn't take (honestly, there are things I would auto-pick for every single list for my tau in that codex, the relics are AMAZING.), its just the mot basic list possible. spam basic infantry in transports take a pair of HQs who are honestly not related to anything and pick a few HS.

Maybe, just maybe, when the same lists don't work anymore then its time to look in other directions?
"Naked boys in trucks" is no longer perfect? its FINE. codex changes SHOULD bring list changes. try NEW things.
Maybe hordes of the (now cheaper) stormboys work? maybe the boys in the trucks just need some 'eavy armor? or painboys? or both? maybe the boys would rather have a big battlewagons.

THATS what we mean when we say "play a few games", don't just analyze how well the same old list will do in the new codex, work out how the new codex works. don't just decide ahead that the entire codex is a failure (some people do) when you honestly yet to have a clue on how it works in actual games when utilizing the new stuff and leaning on the strengths of the new codex. it has some great options now and properly using them should lead you to a strong list.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

They have to take a morale check if the explosion kills more than 25% of their number. Statistically, 50% boyz will be wounded and about 41% dies.

Good Battle report. I had been waiting to see a drop pod army in 7th and they did not disappoint. Also showed how strong missiles on the pods would be. Mob rule looks fine as you get a ton of them now with the extra force org slots.

Report really hammer home, you have to kill the pods now...

Best line of the battle though... "Oh".... O.o

Thanks for sharing the report. With it being the first game, you can see there are some tactics that will need to be tweaked, especially with the mob rule.

Reese had first turn. He could have moved the Trukks up a bit circling the wagon so to speak. Then, disembark the Boyz behind the wall of Trukks. This serves three purposes: (1)avoiding the pinning test when the Trukk is destroyed/explodes (2) helps keep flamers off the Boyz. (3) creates harder decision points with target priority as there are 9 additional units physically on the table.

The Mob rule can be quite punishing, but I think that is why you will need to take Boyz in numbers, which Reese did.

All in all, I think the Orks have a LOT of potential in the book and held its own very well in what I consider one of the hardest army builds currently in the game: drop pod Marines.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

The new mob rule and nerf to trukks were clearly designed by GW to hurt low model count trukk ork armies. This to force players to play larger horde style lists and buy more boyz.

Great report nonetheless, just a shame GW's agenda is so blatant with these new rules.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007

First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.

Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.

Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.

Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me.

Looks like Orks will have to go 4th ed style and just go minimum troops, because that mob rule is mental, if I pick out your nob with barrage or something your unit is boned. Looks like 10-20 man grot squads is how its going to be and you just go after the units where mob rule isn't going to be a thing you need to worry about.

At least barrage and sniper weapons don't auto get pinning anymore.

This codex pretty much forces you to take the horde detachment just so you can get more HQs, Grotsnik is pretty much mandatory as he adds fearless, FNP, and D3 attacks on the charge to any unit he joins. Add in a bunkerpult full of meganobz with a lucky stikk megaboss along with a KFF and you might be able to do something.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Dan just did to Reece what I almost did with my Tyranids against his Taudar back in 6th. Reece was lulled almost to sleep with thinking that he had won. In my game, he caught it before it become too late. In this game, he didn't.

Moral of the story - play to the very end and don't let up. If your opponent is sneaky, he may just find a way to steal one from you.

That was enjoyable to watch. Man, Mob rules really hurt, but IMO having that much AP1 dropping and killing Teucks with Impunity is definitely a factor. I mean, had it not been AP1 those Tucks would have blown up with a reduced frequency, and Mob rule wouldn't have been as big of an impact.

Wrecks really aren't as devastating, just a single leadership! which still does suck. Explodes, especially AP1 Pens are just damaging.

AP1 Pen: 42% chance of explodes
AP2 Pen: 28% chance of explodes
AP3+ Pen: 14% chance of explodes

And an 18% chance of making both Leaderships if it does explode and deal 25% casualties.

Mob Rule is definitely debilitating, but despite it taking out 1/6 of the Boyz, it was still a very close game in favor of the Orks. Looking forward to more.
