As the question states, Cosplay, do you?

I went to my first Cosplay event today, nothing major, just the local group met every month. Well I was invited by a friend and had to come up with a costume in like thee days. I was going to try and make the female guardsman from the film Space Marine. It then dawned on me that I lack the time and materials to build the armour so I had a rummage threw my clothes.

I found a red turtle neck woollen dress and a large black belt. I could go as Lana Kane. So after watching it all....again, I found that she did indeed have a red dress the same as mine

Just wish I had taken at lest one photo of me and not of every one else

Oh and to top it off it was also the hottest day of the year today here in the south of the UK so I was melting like a woollen cladedd meltty thing , great fun and will do it again though perhaps not Lana Kane in the middle of summer

Does having a beard, long hair, being lazy and drinking a lot count as cosplaying Kyoraku?

If so, I do it every day.

No, but it's an art form I respect if it's done well.

@Soladrin; Why not
My ex was good at being one of the grummpy old gits from the muppets...until it dawned on me he was just a grumppy old git all the time

@Flashman; They all said I looked good, never mind I had the six foot tall and freakishly large hands already going for me

I've never done it, but always wanted to try it! I always wanted to go as either a commissar, space marine, or even some character I used for an RPG (well... considering I have a fake cardboard saw around, that one might work).

By the way, what happens at a con anyway?

I was fairly involved with the UK cosplay scene a few years back. I still have a lot of friends who are, and charge along to various conventions for drinks with them. I'd like to get back into the actual costuming itself, I haven't had a fresh one in about two years, but it costs a bomb in materials to do something good (unless you can sew really well, which I cannot). The girlfriend and me are looking at doing a Mass Effect one as things stand.

In my experience Anime cons work like this:

spend all your money on stuff first day, get wasted the rest of the weekend, own some scrubs at fighting game tournament.

Only new guys actually buy stuff at cons (or indeed, even get tickets half the time). You roll back eight to ten years, and you used to get deals and cut price merchandise. These days though, anything you can buy there, you can get cheaper online.

I would like to cosplay the Engineer from Team Fortress 2.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I don't, but I have a lot of respect for people that do it well. I love the craftsmanship aspect of it.

Honestly. I actually have a fair amount of respect for people that do it very poorly, too. I think it takes a lot of "don't give a feth" / self confidence to Cosplay super girl when you're over 2 bills. So despite the fact that I don't particularly like seeing bad cosplay, I do wish sometimes I cared as little about what others think as they do.

Looking forward to the parade at gencon this year.

When I do it, it looks sad and pathetic. But I did recently start making swords outta paper that are pretty good.
My only attempt so far

+1, exactly my opinion. I really dislike seeing the "Bad cosplay" but you'll never see me saying bad of them or criticizing their work: I really respect the amount of work and trouble and really. the courage to just go and cosplay and have fun.

Honestly, I never cosplayed and I kinda want to. I wouldn't mind cosplaying as One Piece's Akainu (and I hate OP) but I don't have the required manliness

To be fair, any cosplay that involves that style of coat is something I want to do, hell, I'd love to strut that thing through the streets.

There seemed to be a big cosplay event on in Manchester today. I must say, I find it a bit strange and nerdy, but meh, more power to you guys. It must take a lot of balls, not to mention the effort that goes into some of the costumes. I'd rather have a bunch of cosplayers walking around my city than say, a large group of football fans...

I got executed by a female commissar last year. I went to some NZ event with my GF to see whats around. An excuse to go to the capital. Some real wierdos there, but some real cool stuff too.

Cant say I can get into it myself.

People have different motivations for doing it. You tend to find it boils down to one or several of the following:-

-You enjoy having people pay attention to and take photos of you.
-You're hoping to work in sfx/costuming some day, and cosplaying is a great way to learn to make and showcase stuff for a portfolio.
-You're an indie teenager and you know a totally hawt girl who does it, so you buy a costume off the shelf.
-You do LARPing/military re-enactment, and as a sci-fi/fantasy buff on the side, find it a natural progression.
-You love to make things with your hands.
-You're a massive geek and think it looks cool.

and finally.......you're manly enough to think it looks like a laugh(after several stiff drinks) so why not?

Would you find it weird if they were all dressed as redcoats and re-enacting the Battle of Isandlwana? Ultimately, all that changes is the fandom.

I'd love to cosplay,i have several problems though

1. I'm too young to pull most cosplays off
2. My budget is incredibly low and i'm easily distracted by new shinies.
3. My special skills are limited to cooking minute rice in 58 seconds.
4.I have the attention span of a kid high on cola and sugar,it takes me weeks to paint 1 space marine, let alone create a costume of one.

IF (and that's a big if) i'd manage to get past those problems,i'd still face the problem that there are barely any Anime Cons etc. in Belgium,so sadly i can't cosplay.

Maybe at anime cons, but at Transformer cons you tend to be able to haggle your way down past eBay prices.
