Hey guys, just thought I'd link my ramblings from the P+M forum here to see if you thought it was a good idea....?
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/612869.page
I'd rather not dilute that thread so please post most discussion there but if there are some serious N+B bits to discuss then chuck them in this thread.
Cheers.

I don't really see the need for a 'procase'. First off it'd cut the showcase forum in two for no real gain; what would the point of splitting the forum down the middle be? Is it worth doing that just in case someone comes along and gets a little disheartened?

Secondly, who gets to decide what is 'pro' and what isn't? Some paint jobs are obviously by skilled painters, whereas others clearly aren't, but you're asking to define something very subjective for most people. One person's 'pro' might be another's TT quality, whereas someone's TT quality might be someone else's 'pro'. There will also be disagreements and, given the fact that it's the internet, arguments that just are not worth the hassle, and telling someone who posts in the 'pro' forum that their work belongs in the 'other' showcase is disheartening in its own right, and only opens a gateway for arguments.

Showcase is perfectly fine as it is, which is a forum for finished models of any skill level (within reason, of course - dunking a model into a pot of red and swirling it around, for example, would not classify); fragmenting it would serve no purpose.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Agreed with Av. There's no need for a "procase". It'd just create more problems then it's worth.

"Pro," assuming it still short for "professional" would imply the painter does it for money or other rewards, such as to sell off on ebay or barter.
My suggestion would be that a sub-forum for "Studios" and commission painters might bump competition and quality up immensely. My entire argument is in the original thread.

As described earlier, not only would doing so not "bump up" competition or quality, it just isn't needed in the commission painting world.

It just isn't worth the hassle to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

And some, I assume, are good people."

If I understand the first post correctly, part of the argument is that the uber-good pro painted models can be discouraging to we lesser mortals.

While I think there is something in that, I think the way to combat it is by looking at the "lesser mortals'" work and congratulating them on getting it to a good tabletop standard.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Sure, but I tend to find that in order to find work by normal people painted to a tabletop standard I have to wade through a load of stuff from studios that doesn't really interest me first.
As more studios tend to be using the space these days the overall quality has increased but it seems to have scared off some of the normal painters who are looking for critique.

In the heights of the GK craze, there was at least one time I've finished a model to be what I consider very high quality for me, gone to post a picture on Dakka, looked at the top three GK P&M threads instead, and then closed Dakka and gotten a beer rather than posting.

That's not really Dakka's responsibility to fix, and I do appreciate the amazing paint jobs I've seen here, but being able to actually FIND the threads of the lesser mortals amidst the studio threads is hard sometimes. Of course, I don't really have an easy solution either.
