So a bit of background. I normally play 40k and I've seen more and more threads about leaving 40k and everyone of them screams praise for Infinity. So I looked into it and it seems like something I'd like. But I'm a bit fuzzy on everything and just wanted to make sure I have everything right before continuing.
This are what I believe to be true. Please correct me if i'm wrong on anything.
-There's enough models in the Ariadna starter pack to play a game.
-The rules for the game are found free online.
-The rules for the armies are found free online.

The rules and just about everything else you need to play except the minis can be found here;
http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/downloads/

This wiki will explain all of the rules, equipment, weapons, etc, and it contains the FAQs:
http://infinitythegame.wikispot.org/Home

And this sit will let you play around with different army builds and if you like one then you can print it out right from there. It will also tell you the stats and equipment for your army, how many you can take, etc:
http://infinitythegame.com/army/

And to answer your question, the Ariadne Vanilla starter box contains 125pts as is. This is similar in value to just about every starter box so if you know someone with a box you can easily get a game going.

Of course do keep in mind that depending on how you choose to label each figure in regards to your possible options depending on his/her equipment, can also increase or decrease the overall army list cost of the starter box.

Almost all of them, yes. However, the campaign system is exclusively in the Campaign Paradiso book.

Sure, maybe. But soon enough you'll own them all

But with just the standard ariadna starter you could stretch it without much difficulty to make a 150pt army which is the lower game size you'd play.

You're correct about free rules and army stats (get used to the idea of using an army builder, these are way more convenient than lists), but cost-wise I'd assume a starting purchase of a starter box + 2 blisters if you want to get to an even points cost. This is especially important for Ariadna, which has very cheap units.

Thank you everyone for the help! I've already picked my army but does anyone know a good site that has a quick summary of the armies in both fluff and on the table for my friend?

There is quite a good fluff section with videos right here on Dakka, if you can put up with the guy's rather humour accent
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/549783.page

Bell of Lost Souls made a post about the different faction playstyles (although, I think a lot of players will think it's a bit of a misnomer as you can play different factions with different play-styles)
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2013/01/infinity-choosing-your-faction.html

And, I would probably just link to the gallery with the different factions - usually it's the miniatures that gets ya !
http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/facciones/

Hope that helps!

I have one more question and this one is more geared towards Ariadna. Why get Métros? I love the way they look (like seriously they look so much better than the Line Russians imo) but rules wise (and correct me if I'm wrong) they're worst. They're only one point cheaper but lose some stats as well as can only take 2 basic guys. Again correct me if I'm wrong but this is just how I'm seeing it.

Short version: you take Metros because you play FRRM, and can't take line kazaks.

Long version: Within most factions there are specialised sub-factions (sectorials), representing a particular world/race/nation. They give up many of the units you have in the vanilla army, but gain increased AVA for what they can take and the ability to form link teams.

You don't take Metros because of the Rifle profile, but because of the one directly underneath it.

Same goes for Caledonian Volunteers, though its the two profiles after the first that are pretty damn fantastic.

Because they're cheap. Same deal as the Keisotsu in Yu Jing - 5 guys in a link adds up and if a fully equipped link team costs you like 70 points it's easy to fit it in a list. Sure, individually they're crap but a B5 HMG or an ARO from a linked ML is not something to ignore.

Alright last dumb question. The will the template from 40k work in Infinity? And if not how close are they?

Not sure about the round ones but you're going to be missing a teardrop template, I think the 40k is equal to infinity's small one.

^^^: Except that 40k's has a round tip and Infinity's is more elongated.

No they won't. Just print out and laminate the official ones.

The round one will work - in a fashion.
It WILL be missing the directions for dispersion (scatter), so it will only really be half-useful at best.

The flamer template will work, but it will cover more at the non-pointy end (as it ends in a 3" radius circle, and the infinity one is a more eggy shaped end).

You'll be missing the heavy flamer/chain rifle template. So you are going to need to print that out anyway.

As said, you'll be printing out and probably laminating the chain rifle template anyway, so you might as well do the others. Something else you'll want to print and laminate are the counter sheets. Remembering which models have what camo and what models are burnt and what models are immobilised or disabled or in a foxhole or any of the other few dozen states the tokens represent without actually using tokens is a fools errand.

Also, if you have any spare/useless CDs/DVDs you can use them as spare smoke templates, they're almost the same size (1 mm difference IIRC).

I use the clear plastic spacers from a stack of blank cds for that purpose (clear plastic cd sized and shaped discs used to "top and tail" the stack of blanks) With the smoke template glued underneath it (picture showing through the disc). I've got them for monofilament clouds, swarm grenades, smoke (normal and ZV) and fire/blast markers.

Thanks for the answers for the templates. Alright seriously last dumb question. I know this is a rules question but it is a very straight forward one and I'd hate to create a thread that'll be so pointless. So I got my first small game under my belt (about a 75 point game), and when a friend and I got in cc, we realized we had no idea how many dice each person got. So the question is how do you determine the dice that each person get.

One d20 each currently.

In N3 this will change, though. Certain things will increase the number of dice you get to roll in CC.
