Many male Anime fans especially in Japan [ some even have performed public ceremony for it ] have declared certain Anime girls as their wives, your thoughts?
It's called Waifu and it's pretty old and yeah, kind of creeping. Sometimes its just a really dedicated (to dedicated) form of fandom and at other times it crosses into the insanely disturbing "there's something seriously wrong with this person" territory.
While many fans take waifu as very mocking aspects of their own subculture (lots of threads on anime boards pop up asking "your waifu" and really the thread is just asking about everyone's favorite female character), but even recognizing that this has evolved into a form of self mocking, it can get kind of awkward, just because the occasional person who takes it too seriously just makes everyone else seem like they're not mocking the idea enough :S Like people who have actual ceremonies. That's eye brow raising.
They're fictional characters. I don't expect anyone to maintain commitment to a person who isn't real (in the same way I don't expect fans to be fans of just one thing at a time), and I think being concerned polygamy is gonna rise up from a people taking fictional characters far too seriously is being afraid of nothing.
It's just one of those weird things from Japan that has become widely publicized in the west. Weird things like that have happened here to;

Is there anything bad about promoting polygamy? Is it just because it's illegal that it shouldn't be promoted? Or is there something also bad about polyamory, which is legal in most countries?
Personally, I think the only bad thing it could promote is the idea that one can claim another person to anything without their consent.
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation
Creepier than waifu? I'll avoid Googling that one, if you don't mind.

I'm assuming you mean something other than the Tibetan mind created apparition or its Western Thoughtform equivalent.
Care to explain?
Also, the greatest thing to come out of the Waifu phenomenon:

If he means what I think he means, hes referring to a variant of the referenced Tibetan/Western Thoughtform which has become popular with furries and bronies, in which "tulpamancers" create for themselves "imaginary friends" which exist entirely within their thoughts but are capable of "assuming control" of their bodies to i teract with the outside world. Having sexual relations with ones tulpa is evidently possible through masturbation whilst imagining the act.

So they married their hands or flesh light?
Hopefully no animals were harmed in such events.
Whatever floats your boat.

Can one cheat on a "waifu" ?
Is the marriage considered legal?
Can you get life insurance on a waifu and if that character dies in the series can you collect the insurance money?
What are the rules if a Waifu is married in the series she is from?
Better option, get a girl who likes to Cosplay. Seriously.

Polygamy imbalances the sex ratios for the gender who is in the minority in any relationship.
If multiple wives is allowed, it is unfair to other men who now have less potential partners. Vice verse for multiple husbands.
