Stalwart Space Marine
|
When I started this hobby I was playing Chaos Space Marines. When I was young I would play Dawn of War Dark Crusade and Soul Storm as CSM. Couldn't really get into the game because I was a kid with no money and knew no one that played. My sophomore year in high school a buddy of mine told me that he got into the hobby and then soon I started. Since then I have gone playing just CSM to back and forth between CSM and Space Wolves and now Space Wolves have became my main army. All I have left of CSM is Abaddon, a Deamon Prince 2 Sorcerers, a Lord, 5 Chosen, 24 CSM, the old pewter dreadnought and the Dark Vengeance CSM guys. I have probably played my CSM once or twice in about a year and a half now. And now I feel like I should either sell or trade the last of what I have, but I don't want too. Is this something you guys have struggled with, and if so what did you do?

I make a point of not selling anything, ever because you never know when you might need something or feel the urge to return to an army that you have left for some time so I would say keep them unless you specifically have to sell/trade them in order to fund a new army.
If you are not in that situation, then why get rid? You might find the passion for the army returning at a later date or at a later edition.

If you're not in dire need of cash, don't sell. You might want to come back to your csm. Or inspire somebody to play them vs you.

I never sell. It's just a waste of money and time and you will probably feel like playing it at some point.
In my local group there are two guys weeping... From one I bought his Necron army pretty cheap when they were still considered sub-par and he wanted to play something that wins. Now I'm regularly wiping him off the table with his own models (partly). The other one sold his Grey Knights before the new Codex came out and now asked me to buy them back. But I won't sell them since I already put a lot of work in removing their crappy paintjobs.
Bottom line: I agree to the others, if you don't desperately need the money do not sell. Having multiple armies also allows you to play 40k with people who don't have an army of their own.

Unless you need the cash for food on the table or to pay the rent, don’t sell. Someday nostalgia will come calling, or you get a new, stronger codex, and you will want your old stuff.
You can always buy new things, but you can’t re-purchase your childhood and history. Store them away for a while if you need to, but never sell.
I’ve got shelves of old stuff. I might never play them again, but they come out from time to time for photo shoots. Reto-spectives, comparison pics, etc. Sometimes they see use for PnP RPG fights. But I’d not part with them.

Seriously though, I agree.
The only things I've ever sold are things I've somehow end up with - that have no bearing on my own armies.
Forgeworld once sent me some sort of Carnefix by mistake, and let me keep it. I hate bugs, so it went on ebay
I also sold a couple of other models I ended up with in other unusual ways
Actually I (kinda) lie!
Once upon a time I had 2 Orc/Ork armies.... but I only sold them to my brothers (to get them into the hobby)
Also - they consisted largely of models that came in starter edition boxes I'd bought (2nd Ed 40K and.... I dunno... 4th or something WHFB)

I regret selling my first army simply because it was painted really really crappily... I painted a couple of units per weekend until the army was done.
I sold that army and then I just couldn't bring myself to paint another army so crappily... so I ended up not having any armies for a very long time until I got my next army painted up to a standard I found acceptable. It just would have been nice to actually been able to play with my first army while I was still building the 2nd.
But no, I wasn't really attached to my first crappily painted armies. The only thing I am/was slightly attached to were models that were nice models and are now OOP. The old bretonnian archers, the old metal Space Wolves, all the Epic 40k stuff, that sort of stuff.

My first army was SW. I played a lot, loved the game, and then life threw me a curve ball and I wound up with no one to play with. After a few years I had like 4k of SW sitting around taking up space. I sold all but a few models that had I liked a lot. Also sold all but a few of my second army as well. Made enough for my Honeymoon in Disney world.
I later moved, got back into the game and bought quite a bit again. Do I regret it? No, not in the slightest.

I sold my first ever army very quickly as a kid, I don't regret it really, although I would like to have my old captain to paint again, there's a little emotional attachment to some of my models, like Typhus, I could never get rid of him simply because he's a gift from a very special person in my life, which is why I always try and field him.
So yes and no, if you have an attachment to them, keep them, if not and they aren't getting used, then yes if you feel it will be beneficial and you won't want them in the future.

I don't sell stuff unless they're items I don't need that I acquired in a lot/trade.
If the model is for an army I collect, it stays. Period.
Duplicates I may consider selling/trading if they're Independent Characters/Named units, but I can never have enough of the same unit regardless of how weak/powerful they are.

I have been selling/thinning out my collection in order to get new ruleset/codex, new games, etc that i am interested in to further my hobby. Old stuff sitting around doing nothing to me is a waste i never collected stuff to have it to go "oh that is so nice collecting dust." I say this as i had like 5 40k armies and about same number WFB. When i do get to play its limited and most has sat for years and when i do play i have hard time remembering all the special rules and stuff for each army so to me it makes it hard for me to be good with any of them to use the army to full potential so to speak. I even thinned out my Space Wolves (first army) to what i know i will use and not stuff that I might use as an example.. still thinning out my Blood Angels but waiting for new dex. Doing this is allowing me to get Xwing, Bolt Action, Black Powder (Napoleonics), Space Hulk, Rules, dex, terrain, Zombiecide, etc... things that I can have a variety with instead of all GW stuff doing nothing . I have a very limited budget these days, so of course if i had funds i probably would not bother doing this method to further my hobby.

I sold my first army.
I then later on ended up buying most of it back from the guy I'd sold it to.
Interestingly, I began that army, sold it to buy my second, then started my third army; Guard, which I had started with in the beginning.
While I don't regret it because the situation turned out ok, I do realise it was a stupid thing to do.

I couldn't sell any model I spent considerable time painting. I think that's why I had no problem selling my first army, because I didn't actually spend a lot of time on it. Most of it I painted in a single weekend, the rest was painted over the course of a few more weekends.
These days it literally takes me months or years to paint a whole army and I just can't bring myself to sell any of it. That one was table ready in a single weekend

I've sold off most of my first army to get my second one going. But it was mostly stuff I haven't painted so no memories were lost. I may stop now that I have a pretty okay force to start with and keep all these troops as an allied detachment.

I would keep it. I have units for several different armies that I don't play, but I won't sell them just on the off chance I change my mind sometime. You never know, the next chaos codex could come out in a year and be awesome. I have chaos models just sitting there waiting for such an occasion.

I sold all the Cadians which were part of my 1st army, but I kept all the vehicles. When one invests in Death Korps, one does not keep using Cadians.
The only actual army I sold was a Steel Legion army I made shortly before the 6th edition Guard codex dropped. Getting everything I built the army around nerfed/removed killed it for me, and while I tried to play them some more, and got them fully painted, I just wasn't enjoying the army at all. If I was going to play Guard, I'd rather play my Korps and at least have some fun. Sold them for what I paid for them, and reinvested the money into my Minotaurs a little and made a Praetorian kill team using Victoria Miniatures models, which I've enjoyed significantly more.

If you can keep it, I would . Unless you seriously believe you will never ever play/want them again, I would keep them and not trade/sell them. It's always fun to have a backup army, even small ones, in case you want to play say a small 1k battle with your side army.
The only models I've ever sold were things I've found to be worthless/hate playing.

Unless you are short of space i would say keep them. You have gone back and forth a few times so you may do so again.
I have kept most of my Necron because i keep going back to them after a couple of years.
You could even repaint them and put them on display.
I still have my first army of RT-era SM. I haven't used them in years but feel very sentimental about them.

I have built and sold off many armies during my 25+ years in the hobby. The hardest was when I finally sold off the contents of my long used and long loved genestealer cult army, but it just wasn't the same to play anymore and had to have too many house rules to work properly as the editions moved on. My other starting force was Chaos Space Marines. My khornate army has grown and expanded across all of that span of time. My nurgle, tzeentch and slaanesh forces bloomed, were sold off and then I regretted it and I then completely rebuilt them again. Now I know I can't get rid of all of my chaos forces anymore. They are just too much a part of what I enjoy about the 40k universe. I have 11 armies total right now, so really don't worry too much about how much I play various forces. Some I keep around because I like to model them. 7 of the 11 are chaos related: 1 chaos marine army for each of the 4 powers, 1 Khorne/Nurgle daemon horde, 1 Slaanesh/Tzeetch daemon horde and my fully converted heretics/lost and the damned army. My others are Dark Eldar (woohoo for the lame new codex! ), Dark Angels, Space Wolves and an Eldar Spirt host force. I enjoy each for different reasons. I've built at least one of every 40k army, except for Tau, and some I've done multiple times in multiple forms. Some, though, I had little interest in beyond the modeling of the army and once it was built I sold it off to fund my next project.
Only you can decide if you should sell off your marines. If you are in need of funds to be able to acquire more space wolves, then selling an old army is a good way to do that. If you don't need to cannibalize it for funds then there is no harm in keeping it. Few people I know only have a single army and those that do wish they had more.

I got back into the hobby about 6 or 7 years ago and started a Which Hunters army (read Sisters of Battle / Adepta Sorroritas for the uninitiated). The paint job I gave them initially was pretty poor, as I got deeper into the hobby I started a second army (as you do) and my painting skills improved.
Having taken a break from my SoB whilst I built up my BA force, I eventually went back to my SoB and having complained about the cost of expanding the army (since it's still all metal models) I was asked at my club why I didn't just sell it and get a 'real' army. The truth is I will never depart with any of my models (Unless I literally can't afford to put food on the table, then perhaps) and I have even stopped and repainted all my SoB to a standard I'm really pleased with (the trouble is now I feel I need to repaint any of my BA that are sub standard!)

The money was for my little dog medice and vaccines (it was an emergency).

My first army, my eldar, live in my shed of shame. I bought into this army because I liked the models. I still like the models, even if I think the rules now suck. The rules got given away, the models moved to the shed.
