I ask because I just got out of the ER for it and now on crutches (god that sucks). They said surgery isn't likely an option with the pain I'm feeling. Officially I have a knee infusion. Anyone know how long it takes to heal those? My paper work says 3 weeks, but I'm reading around half a year to a year. I'm banned from all exercise now theyou said though.

I tore the meniscus in my left knee dismounting a horse, I hypoextended it apparently. It was actually about a week before it gave me problems. Then it was a couple months before it completely healed.
It still bugs me from time to time.

You get injuries like that from time to time. I still have an issue with my shoulder from 2 years ago and it wasn't even a particularly damaging event.

that is what I'm scared off.
Its really not a big deal. Its really just a very occasional bit of pain, like maybe once or twice a year, and even then its no worse then joint pain you might have when its really cold.

Take your pick,
1) very sharp Kopis
2) nice heavy machete
3) electric knife that can bisect a turkey in under 3 seconds

Welll, see. Im scared for two reasons
1: I met a girl in the Disability van that said she hurt her leg in HS, then healed fine, but one day she used the stairs and it gave out.
2: My cousin hurt his knee once and the same thing.

Same to me (hyper-extended) but from a jump. Did a bad PLF and was off jump status for six month (and no run profile)

You have fluid on the knee. That's it. It could be arthritic, or it could simply because you're heavy (which can also cause gout) and your joints have taken a beating due to that.
If you actually torn your meniscus, you'd know. You'd hear clicking or popping in your joint and your knee would swell considerably and would probably lock up.
After my first scope, it took me about 8 weeks to get back to full health. I was 15. Every subsequent time I tore them and had surgery it took less time to recover.
Whoever told you a year is either the world's slowest healer or has no idea what they're talking about.
It depends on the cause, really. I had water on my left knee for nearly 3 years after my ACL was reconstructed, but then I also lifted aggressively and played contact sports the entire time. Conversely it went away after a couple weeks following a gnarly hit just over my right patella, though the bursitis was caught early.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Again, whomever told you a year is full of it.
Motercycle Accident. was what caused it. Twisted it bad. I do feel a clicking though, that is what caused it.
But they kept insisting no surgery unless it got better.
Oh well, Atleast I get free Van rides all around campus.

I guess I've always considered "healed" as "able to use again"
My gak won't ever heal heal. Just hope you don't get a Baker's Cyst because of it. I get one all the time on my right knee when I hit the squats and lunges hard.
Its more of a pain in the ass than anything.

I tore my ACL tripping over a tree root. Fethed it completely.
Had a reco done and was in a thigh to ankle brace for 4 weeks, and then on a hinged knee brace for six more.
Then 3 months physio.
Still gives me issues 20 years later.

Hi hotsauce1, my husband asked if I could reply, as I am a nurse at Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital MOSH) in Franklin, WI. You need to start with an MRI of you knee to determine exactly what is going on in your knee. If the meniscus or other structures are torn, nothing will fix that except for surgery. If there are loose bodies or bone spurs, surgery will also take care of those. You need to make sure it's not the ACL, too. Having a knee arthroscopy is the best treatment. Surgery takes about 45min and the recovery is 4-6 weeks, with some physical therapy and you'd be on crutches less than a week. For now, take 600-800mg Ibuprofen three times a day for inflammation, Tylenol for pain; unless they gave you Percocet or vicodin for the the pain-don't take extra Tylenol with those but do take stool softeners, as you will get constipated. Ice as needed for pain/swelling but after the initial few days, heat helps. I don't know where you are located, but all of our surgeons at MOSH are plain old fabulous and amazing, and you couldn't go wrong with any of them. If it turns out your ACL is torn, the recovery is much longer and surgery more involved. See your primary doctor and get an MRI. Then, go from there. I'd take awesome care of you when you come see me at MOSH!
hotsauceman1 wrote: Thanks, They think it is bruising though and will go away. The pain is less and less each day,
I just hate crutches, I cant leave my room at all.
Because the ER was hazy and I ant remember Im not sure was they said. They said an MRI in 3 weeks if id doesnt get better, but surgery seems unlikely with where the pain is facilttated.
All I know is im living off Hot pockets because I dont want to go get food.
Speaking only from experience of a meniscus tear and other injuries over the years from sport.
How much is an MRI? If it's free, take it. It should tell you what's up. If it isn't, then i'd wait. In the UK they are expensive so won't give them out easily.
I have a torn meniscus. It's been over two years now since i originally did it. I first did it, kept doing sports, then after a few weeks i collapsed as my knee bent sideways. I couldn't straighten my leg. Hobbling everywhere.
Basically the deal was, i had to force my leg straight. It turns out part of my legs were weak from use of the same muscles but not all the muscles. The whole leg must be strong to form a strong knee. Physio for a while got me going okay. I constantly had swelling and inflammation.
Then randomly my knee would "pop". Basically something in my knee would move to somewhere else, i could feel it, and it would prevent me from straightening my leg due to pain. But i'd force it and it would ease up. And the funny thing was, every time i'd do this, i would be able to bend my knee all the way back, which i couldn't normally do. Or i could leave my knee, do a little run, and it would pop back.
This went on for months. Recovery time saw me at a few days per "pop" as months went on. Then numerous doctors, knee specialists and physios, i got an MRI. I was always told soft tissue damage, but i myself didn't buy it. Turns out, a meniscus tear. And just before that i was scared as the knee specialist did say it could be ligament too.
I was offered surgery. I looked into it, it involved cutting the loose torn meniscus out, with an increased risk of arthritis. Yeah, screw arthritis, my knees are screwed already, i want to be able to actually walk when i'm 60.
So over two years on, i just consider myself luckily i don't have ligament damage. My knee is slowly getting better, pops happen less frequent, i still have less confidence in my knee but it's getting there and movement is always increasing. The most difference i have found is not rest and Glucosamine (and i bought the good stuff), it was constant exercise, eating hardly any sugar, and eating healthy(ish). Do some knee stretches (mild achey pain is okay, sharp pain is not), knee strengthening exercise, don't sit with your knees bent for long periods, don't sit with your knees straight for long periods, don't drink fizzy drink, don't eat chocolate, don't drink alcohol, eat lots of leafy greens, don't have any fun basically. Or just do what you can!
In my experience, most doctors are useless. They need to know so much, so that they know so little. More opinions the better.
Good luck. PM me if you want anymore info, but i'm no expert ok!

2 people. Don't panic. Some people are just prone injuries.

I respect the view given and that you are professional, but claiming it won't heal on it's own is a wild claim. There's clearly not enough information, and i'm only calling this one out, as to not panic the guy.
