The darker colors and the new accents on the lacing work great. You might want to think about making his tabi a different color than his pants, though.

Now showing a Harlequin Dreadnought!

Painting total as of 4/25/2024: 33 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

Different socks you say , we will check what the store room has and see if there are any in his size.

Meanwhile I rebased Hida Amoro.

He will just be an unarmored samurai with No dachi

And started a few test colors for the blue set. I think this guy is probably the winner

He almost looks more crane clan than anything else, but when finished we will see.

Still a lot of work to do on him.

Not much time this weekend to do anything though. Tomorrow we have a wake for one of my aunts who passed away last week. My dad is taking it really hard and his health has gone down even more since the news that she was terminal. We think the end is very near for him as his only viable dialysis port is wearing out and his bleeding is not clotting, all were signs we were told to watch out for. It’ll be a blessing for him, he’s not willing to quit, but he is tired of fighting a losing battle.

New colours are looking good! That light blue is also ace, lovely sheen to it.

Thank CommissarKhaine, I really am liking the blue as well.

shasolenzabi wrote:Oh yeah, cool looking forces of the Samurai

Thanks Shasolenzabi, it’s been a long time coming.

Well as CK pointed out, that blue is ace, and really strikes a cord with me. The banner has since been painted astronomicon grey as a base, and will get highlighted up to white before getting transfers applied. In the mean time, I shall continue forward with more in this style, including a repaint I was not happy with. So the blue samurai from this older pic.

Has met a touch up with the paintbrushes and I think is coming out better. Besides he was a victim of the shelf collapse a while back. His nose has actually been flattened into a circle . Hopefully not noticeable from 3’, otherwise he will get a Ronald McDonald red nose.

Definitely getting there . More touch ups now that I have seen magnified pics of him.

Mounted figs in Test of Honour are at a real disadvantage in the current state of the game, and I don’t see them changing it anytime soon. They need to be used correctly as I see it, moving last so enemies with spears have already activated. Also mounted troops can play important roles in capturing objectives or contesting them since they have a 9” movement instead of the basic 6” of regular troopers.

Thanks monkeytroll , always good to get more reassurance though.

I decided to use the General from the samurai army box that I got recently as another samurai character, even though there are no Daimyo rules, I see this guy who is highly ornate to be at that level. Two hours of painting from raw metal to here, still tons of details to complete.

Riding out with his retinue.

So much detail to work on him still.

I always liked the concept of the Crab Clan, but felt their execution was always a bit lacking. To me, they felt like they should've been hulking brutes, almost like Khorne's Bloodbound, considering their schtick was their preference for brute force against the various forces in the Shadowlands.

I think the samurai minis I have a Crab Clan, so I may have to use your mini as inspiration. You did the armor with Guilliman Blue glaze over a white base, right?

Yeah there were always a few things about L5R that got me, and what you said is pretty true. Although most Crab Clan did use Tetsubo and other blunt weapons instead of swords. It is Guilliman blue, over astronomican grey (I’ll need to find a substitute though as that’s an old foundation paint), I might try out instar paints as they claim to color match it, but ordering a few from England sounds more expensive than finding an armypainter substitute.
Yorkright wrote: All looking good Theo, the updated Crab samurai looks much better!

Thanks Yorkright, I think so too.

I thought about getting into Bushido, but it seems like a waste with having bought so much for Test of Honour. Plus the cheapskate in me cant find a great deal and $10 a fig or more is way more than what I want to pay. So on now to plan out my new wishlist for Test of Honour.

If anyone has some cool suggestions for monsters from Japanese legends that have figs in other ranges let me know. I know many are covered in the Bushido range, but as I said I’m a cheapskate.

You could try Zenit Miniatures and their Kensei range - I just started scavenging bits from their Jorogumo (spider lady demon) for my chaos lot. I mean, I've been away from the scene for a few years now so they may not still be a thing...but as you asked and I had the box right in front of me

Zenit is still around with two recent Kensai kickstarters. They aren’t the cheapest, but their minis are lovely.

Have you tried playing Ronin? It requires fewer models but is an excellent skirmish game. Osprey’s website has rules for mystical beasts

They are still around and just finished a Kickstarter for pirates and conquistadors, I’ll look into them too, but I think they are another small company with little support and no good place to get them in the US.

I'm liking the blue armor so far. That general is a nifty model.

I picked up a pile of Zenit models in an Indiegogo campaign years ago. They are nice models, but kind of fiddly compared to, say Perry or WGF samurai-- lots of hands and weapons to glue on. If you're looking for alternative models, you might consider Kingsford (out of Canada) or Steel Fist (a dude from England). They're kind of pricey for large units, but both are a good source for unique character models.

Thanks Cormadepanda, lots and lots of details...everywhere, that’s why he’s the boss .

Well no progress, but a few updates none the less.

1st, we got a new WiFi router a few weeks ago, probably died before we noticed the electrical problems in the house, but those problems also fried both our old WII systems , so we have been a house of 5 living off of one x-box one. Well I fixed that today . I dropped by the local going out of business toys are us and found 30% off of their Xbox ones, so I got two more (master bedroom and basement are back in action). We can watch Netflix again .

2nd, just got an email from warlord games, I have been accepted as a moderator on their soon to return forum . I’ve never been a Mod before. But I WILL definitely allow the power to go to my head . This might pull me away from D2, but I hope not as I enjoy all gaming stuffs and not just Warlord games stuff.

Well off to set up the Xboxes,Xboxs,Xboxi....whatever.

For a cheap source of Japanese monsters have a look at Rising Sun excellent board game as well.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Thanks Dr H. The colors seemed to just work naturally for me. I know they probably are not accurate, but in my vision of feudal Japan it works.

Thanks ZergSmasher, the details are all actually molded on, so it’s just the wonder of washes and going blind squinting so much.

Llamahead wrote:For a cheap source of Japanese monsters have a look at Rising Sun excellent board game as well.

I $1 backed Rising Sun, but I did not like the look of many of the Monsters. It’s just the art style. I’m not a huge Adrian Smith fan.....runs for cover . I like his 40k work and most of his ideas for Hate ($1 backer there, but that’s it), but his take on Japanese style didn’t fit mine.

Thanks Cam, glad your back about, it’s always a loss when you are absent.

Well not much has been happening here game wise or paint wise. Setting up for a carnival at church tomorrow (does a one time event make me a Carny? I don’t smell of cabbage and I have rather large hands ). I stopped by the dollar shop to grab cookies , glad the wife’s doesn’t read my blogs and saw this little soon to be terrain.

I haven’t been able to find anything like it at Walmart or Hobby Lobby, so I grabbed one and if it works out more will follow.

That’s all for now. Milk and cookies calling

Im not Dead...just resting....no, not even resting. Lot of time spent Mod-ing on the new Warlord forums, and getting reinterested in BtGoA.

So much so that I ordered a new C3starter set and vehicle and tried out a new paint scheme.

First day off from work in a week tomorrow. Still have to work at church and with the kids out of school not much free time. I’ll try and get stuff worked on and posted by the weekend. I figure about 2 weeks till I see my order arrive. Also waiting on my Zombicide Green Horde to show up in the next month or so.
