What would Dakka rank as the best 5 AA ground units?

"Look upon me and know that I can slay you at will. You have no defence save one: to look into the darkness at the back of your own mind. There, you will find Father Nurgle waiting to offer you life in return for your submission. Deny him, and you are mine." — Typhus the Traveller, Herald of Nurgle

1: Devastators/Long Fangs.

And that's about it. Taking dedicated AA units is pointless unless you know your opponent is going to have a lot of flyers. It makes far more sense to take units that are also going to be useful for taking out non-flyer targets.

I'd tend to agree with that statement.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Skyray seems like a no brainer missile-sides as well, velocity trackers meaning you can choose whether or not to have skyfire gives you the best of both worlds.

Anything with a good rate of fire, and str 6-8 tend to make far better AA than dedicated platforms. Preferably with twin linked.
Lootas, sicarians, paskisher, dakkafex pop to the top of my head.

Quad Gun for being cheap and providing cover saves. Other than that, probably the FW Dreadnought with Skyfire.

That's why they made the Wyvern - the same kit makes both Wyverns and Hydras.

Forgot that one. The Contemptor-Mortis is great.

Broadsides with HYMP and Velocity Tracker
Riptide with HBC and Velocity Tracker
Crisis Suits with MP and Velocity Tracker

Anything else . . .

When it comes to AAA the Tau are the masters as their anti-air units still get to be effective against ground targets. They turn Skyfire on and off at will.

For honourable mentions the Hydra for it's range and cover denying capabilities, the Hunter for it's ability to force a flyer from the board and the Stalker for it's ability to engage multiple flyers.

Tau and Space Wolves since 5th Edition.

How did everyone forget about the A-barge and the wave serpent? They're not dedicated AA, but they'll down aircraft like nobody's business.

I like and agree with your top 4 and would round it out with a Contemptor Mortis Dread.

Yeah.

My favorite AA weapons are those anti-tank guns I'm already bringing in my list. A 1 in 6 chance to hit is not a 0 in 6 chance, and the more fliers my opponent brings, likely the fewer other vehicles I have to shoot at with my anti-tank guns.

I guess my favorite AA gun by this metric would be the autocannons I used to take with my MoK terminator squads. One of the most terrifying, gruesome hand-to-hand fighting units in the game taking down fliers was kind of loltastic. Plus, 4 TL shots were generally good for a hit or two a turn, and given how flimsy most airplane's armor is...

MoK Terminators may well be one of the most ineffective sources of AA I can think of.

Though the mental image of a MoK Terminator heavy army taking on a Necron croissant air force is quite funny...

There's a number of units without shooting whatsoever. While termies have tl bolters to glance ork flyers to death at least.

Necro obolisk a auto s8 on all enemy flyer and skimmers in range in both sides shooting phase plus upto 20 s7 teslas(snapping at flyers) and cheap for a lord of war.

anni barge not dedicated but definatly does the job.

Lootas are still good.

anything with midstrength and twin linking.

Re-read the obilisk.

Its does not hit both sides, it "shoots" on both player's turn.

That's actually nifty.

I think it would be more challenging to find five good ground based AA units.

Tau - broadsides, skyrays.

Necrons - Tesla, barges.

Orks - lootas, traitor kannons.

SM - hunters, stalkers.

SW - long fangs.

There we go, 5 good ground based AA armies.

I have 3 iron hands kheres assault cannon mortis contemptors in a 2 k list. What they lack in range the fear of their firepower keeps flyers out of my no fly zone.
