No way am I going to use fancy miniature paints to cover huge pieces of terrain made of foam, glue, spackle, and gravel. What are some good alternatives that people use? Canvas acrylics? Is there a good bulk paint product for doing terrain that you swear by?

Anywhere from common house paint to artist acrylics are fine to use for huge terrain pieces.
I mostly use house paints for basecoating and sealing, and craft paints or student-grade acrylic paints for more detailed work like highlighting and stuff. I will only whip out miniature paints for really REALLY tiny details like the light on lamps, flowers, etc.
There are also some people who gets bulk cheap house paint by purchasing mixed house paints (usually the wrong color choice for the previous customer).

Okay, glad to hear im not too far off in my thinking. Was going to pick up some acrylics for the bulk of the project and use miniature paints for my details.

House paints. Every DIY store has a reduced paint section,it's usually returns. Go get litres of the stuff for a couple of pounds

Dollar store craft acrylics are your new best friend!
One I like is called simply Craft Acrylics, and runs about $1.00 a pop.

Craft Acrylics (Apple Barrel, Folk Art, Delta Ceramcoat, etc, etc) go from a buck to a buck fifty and are a good bet for terrain pieces.
If you're going to use the same color alot, I'd take a sample of the paint to the hardware store and have them mix you up a quart or a gallon of their cheapest paint. I have a Gallon of Light Grey, Dark Grey and slightly ruddy brown that I use for lots of terrain projects. I think I paid 8 bucks a gallon for them at Menards. Just make sure to get "Flat" rather than semi-gloss or eggshell.

For big foamcore, styrofoam, etc without much detail I just use a quart of Rustoleum. Its thick and covers well, so it doesnt look like a piece of foam. Even adds a bit of strength.
