I am super curious as to what the community thinks is the most competitive low model count (less than 30 total models in an 1850 list) army in the game right now.

Tau?
Grey Knights?
Space Marines?

Guard?

Thoughts?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

You could fit 4 or 5 wave serpents in a list, with dire avengers and fire dragons, and then 2-3 wraithknights.

Wait, you started the topic with this question and didn't add the additional criteria of "other than Imperial Knights?"

It's a pretty obvious answer :p

Imperial Knights have the lowest raw model count but they're also bizzare and the skew is such that they don't play well. FMC-spam Daemons, monster-mash Tyranids, Mechdar, most lists that bring an Apoc-sized superheavy, and any Terminator-core lists (whether GK, DA, or Unbound) will run a very small amount of models fairly viably.

Agreed, Knights do ok to well against any army that can't put out a reasonable amount of long range anti armour but horribly against anything that can. I conceeded a game using 7 knights and some mechanicum on the last weekender because my opponents fielded massed conversion beamers I was losing two knights a turn.

My vote would be for the nids list above, can take on most things.

If you don't mind me asking, what is the role of the Mawloc and Malanthrope in that list ?

Malanthrope for additional protection for the Flyrants before they're airborne and the Mawloc is good against Invisible targets as well as being a cheap 6 wound MC who works well with the Lictors.

Thank you for the reply. I haven't played my Nids in a few editions. Back then there wasn't a Mawloc or Malanthrope. I picked up the new codex, and I'm still slowly piecing together current tactics and strategy with the modern bugs.
