It's because the kits are all cast in resin (higher production cost and quality than plastic), and because they are going to sell less than any main plastic kit, so need a higher price and margin to be worth producing at all.

Most what are ~£50?

It's expensive because they're boutique resin models. They don't expect to sell many, so they price them high. It's a niche within a niche.

It's a vast Games Workshop conspiracy. You are in serious danger, now that you've made it public that you know about it.

1. Because they are boutique luxury items.
2. Because resin moulds are INCREDIBLY short lived - since you're basically gluing two pieces of rubber together then tearing them apart again as soon as it's set.

Forge World expensive? I never thought I would say it but Games-Workshop actually made Forge World look acceptable now.

Before I would never buy FW because of price. Now the prices seem reasonable because GW prices just seem ludicrous now.

Still expensive is expensive, but if I ever come back to GW I am considering FW now while before I wouldn't even think of it.

The kits are mostly resin, which is more expensive to handle and produce then plastic and the models also are more finely detailed and are of higher quality.

The shipping cost and customs handling fees is still terrible, though :( And once you factor in a likely 20%-30% discount at a local hobby/gaming store, the difference is pretty huge.

Its because they're still a part of GW.

Well, that, and smaller run, high quality resin is more expensive.

I've never received bad quality from Forgeworld other than the odd bend in a gun from time to time, and after seeing the detail in the models I've received, I must say the cost has always been worth it.

This and because it sells at that price too.

For us in Oz - I find the pricing very affordable in most cases compared to GW products.

I only ever order when I get free shipping mind you and am careful to avoid increasing the value of the product over our thresh hold for taxation on imports.

Because Forge World kits are priced as collector's display items, as opposed to Citadel kits, which are priced as luxury toy soldiers.

If you think normal FW stuff is overcosted, just check the price of an Earthshaker Cannon... Make sure you are sat down first.

I think FW kits are just extra-luxurious toy soldiers

They're in the same realm as other resin miniature companies. It's the shipping I think is too expensive, I'm okay with the actual model prices.

This is so true,
some of the prices for games workshop are a joke now. I remember when 20 cadians were £18, and a squad of 10 kriegsmen were £35. whereas now it is £18 for 10 cadians and £39 for 10 kriegsmen.

Cadians have literally doubled in price, where as kriegsmen (and elysians) have only increased by £4.

You know what they say kids, drive it like its a rental.

Putting things together... a fairly decent 1000 point Adepta Sororitas army new from GW comes to £303.45.

A 1000 point Taghmata Omnissiah army new from Forge World (I got the army list from a user who's fielded them successfully) came to £302.50.

Forge World don't quite seem so expensive now...

Two reasons:

1. Their molds last roughly 10 castings. This cost is factored into the price.

2. There is a tax is included in the cost. For non UK folks this is in turn pushed towards the shipping costs making it cheaper for them to ship things outside of the UK.

Only if you're used to spending the $$ does it seem cheap.

At least with FW, the books especially, you actually feel like you're getting what you pay for, and less like you're being bled dry for artificially expensive products.

What I really want to know is why Games Workshop doesn't sell Forge World products through their own Website which is much more well known. I had known about regular GW for quite some time before I found out about FW. I think they could definitely sell a lot more models that way.
