Subject: Is Alpha Legion in 40K still an organized legion?

We know that Alpha Legion Post-Heresy, they became fractured in order to hide from the Imperium. The many cells network across the galaxy are working independently (Hydra heads) but still have a central command that they are working for (Hydra body).
Many champions became splinter group from the legion (some under guise and still working for the legion) and form their own Warband and some just went rogue and are working for the Imperium and some went Chaos crazy and are now slaves to their Dark masters.
So we know the legion have splinter. But is the Alpha Legion still consider a legion even with some broken off or became splinter groups.
I read this excerpt and because of this excerpt, I feel that Omegon is still their leader and the Legion is strong.
“Even less is known about the internal organisation of the Alpha Legion since the Heresy than was known before. On occasions there have been successful assassinations of members of the Legion thought to be high-ranking officers, but their removal has had little visible effect on Alpha Legion operations.[1a] It is believed that since the Heresy the Alpha Legion operates as independent cells hidden throughout the Imperium, coordinating various Cultist activity to subvert Imperial rule. While these cells operate independently of one another and destroying one will not effect the effort of their overall mission, the Legion still loosely coordinates its actions across the Galaxy. Who is coordinating these efforts and how they are doing so is largely a mystery to the Imperium, but many believe they achieve this through "Operatives". These figures are apparently human, but have undergone limited psycho-hypnotic therapy to make them absolutely loyal to the Legion. These operatives, fully infiltrated into Imperial society, act as the link between Alpha Legion cells and Cultists, and are their primary method of galaxy-wide communication.” Index Astrates: Alpha Legion
I would like to know what your thoughts are on this subject.

Just two questions quickly, what is the reference of that passage? And what part of that passage makes you think Omegon is still in charge?

Nope, but I'll come out and say I voted for #3. They are split, and while some cells might work together, they aren't all united, even loosely.

No Legion has a central command structure today. The closest thing to a properly organized centrally-controlled Legion at anywhere near Legion strength is probably either the Unforgiven (who are a loose confederacy that theoretically defer to Azrael but in practice we don't see them actually doing anything) or the Black Legion (who are only centrally controlled insofar as Abbadon can threaten or bribe people into staying together).

If he is, then he's only leading a small portion at best. I'd imagine that because they are so independent, they really only use their operatives to figure out where other cells are to avoid running the same population.
And there is one difference in our avatars, as I am Bane

You would be in #2 or #3 because you think that the majority of the legion formed their own warband or join other factions. If you still think that AL still has a central command even if the legion is small... then #2.
#1 and #2 still have central command (small or large).
# 3 has no central command (i.e. every group have their own central command and just using AL in names only, or they are declaring that they are the true central command.
My PO thinks that AL still has Omegon as their leader and the strength of the legion is down from 180,000 during the Heresy to about 5,000 (low number).
And about 3,000 are splinter groups or working as mercenary or became Chaos worshipers. So total number of AL left in the galaxy in the 8,000 or so.
However, they have many agents and spies all over the Imperium and many agents are in high-level positions. So I consider AL as one of the most powerful traitor legions.
Automatically Appended Next Post: LOL, the percentage of the votes so far almost represented the status of AL.
Looks like the #1 represent old Central Command and #2 is the new Central Command challenging the old CC. More than half of the legion are the splinter groups and do not report to the CC of any kind.
Interesting.
#1 22%
#2 22%
#3 56%

The reference for that passage I believe is Lexicanum, assuming it's the same one he posted In the Omegon thread even though it was disputed by people with actual extracts from the books.
I voted for three. If there's any kind of command over the whole legion still it would be very very loose, they're slread through the entire galaxy and I'd imagine most AL cells are just working to further their own goals. It would be almost impossible to have any kind of control over all the AL in the entire galaxy when they're so fractured like that, especially since the heads of the serpent don't exactly always have the same ideas, as we can already see from the HH books.

Unfortunately the INDEX ASTARTES article on the Alpha Legion is now, at best, somewhat 'correct'.
New background has made some of it...not make a lot of sense anymore.
Anyway, given how the Alpha Legion is portrayed in 'modern 40K' fiction, we're led to believe that the Legion is fractured and that certainly the 'most active/visible' parts are Mustache Twirling Baby Stapling Lunatics.
There's at least one Alpha Legionnaire fighting the good fight For The Emperor, but he's certainly on the down low.
The rest of the Pro-Emperor contingent must be REALLY, REALLY good at covert ops!

Wouldnt the idea that the legion is splintered be part of the plan when they are the only truely united one left even the warbands that think they've left are still being controlled
what better way to control unruly elements than to give them imaginary freedom

I don't know. I've always thought they have a decentralised command though, but with Alpharius/Omegon in charge of overarching strategy. I voted the top one though. I like to think they're still mostly united.

I think at best there's a 50/50 split between Omegon's boys 'following orders' and/or working towards some vague Greater Good vs. the Mustache Twirling Brigade (Voldorius, Down of War Guy, etc.)

Here's a question for the "Alpha Legion is Secretly Loyalist!" camp:
Are we provided any indication that the Alpha Legion has done anything of note against other forces of Chaos? Such as destroying vital worlds or stealing artifacts or knowledge or such from Chaos and delivering it to the Imperium? Anything to show that maybe they're playing both sides?
Because I cannot think of any such examples, but we have plenty of examples of the Alpha Legion working directly against Imperial aims. Maybe at one point they were covertly loyalists, but I think that time has long since passed, and they are as in the thrall of Chaos as any other Traitor Legion.

In 30K - yes.
In 40K - not really.
There's one Legionnaire working for an Inquisitor - maybe?
And even then, that Inquisitor is consider rather...radical.

Yea, the Alpha Legion hasn't done any anti-chaos stuff in 40k. Admittingly, they haven't done much of anything in 40k post-Legion by Dan Abnett.
Before Legion, the Alpha Legion as far as we knew in the canon fluff was 100% pro-Chaos (note that there's nothing in the Index Astartes article about them supporting the Imperium in any way, and Voldarius at this time was an Alpha Legion Chaos Prince. Also... did Siege of Vraks with its pro-chaos Alpha Legionairre come out before or after Dan Abnett's Legion? I forget).
It was only with Legion where the fluff was updated/changed/retconned so that the Alpha Legion might be working against Chaos and "for the Emperor", and we haven't really had many (or any, even) significant Alpha Legion 40k stories or fluff pieces since then to my knowledge.
The end result is pretty stupid, IMHO (and it seems many agree with me). At this current point in time, the 30k Alpha Legion stuff and 40k Alpha Legion stuff might as well be two separate continuities written in two different eras by two completely different sets of authors.

In the case of the one with the Inquisitor, I'm aware of that one, but (so far) that seems to be an individual, who can, of course, be different from the norm of his type.
Also, while I know the Alpha Legion (or elements of it) gets into fights with other Traitor Marines from time to time, that's fairly normal for any Chaos force. Rivalries and internecine warfare between various Gods and their factions is just how business is done in Chaos.
I'm more interested in anything in the current setting of M41 that indicates that maybe the Alpha Legion is still secretly loyalist... because I'm otherwise just not seeing it.

This is strangely apt for the majority of Warhammer.
It's possible GW will realize they've let the story stagnate and they'll liven things up by making a loyalist AL novel in 40k.
All I can say is.... hey, I'd read it.
