Hey guys just curious as to why you guys chose to play the army you have?? It can be your current army or a past army.

Cheers, C66

"The space marine officer was waving and yelling to his men on the wall unaware he was leading the Squiggoth on. Stompy (the squiggoth) headbutted its way through the wall and gave chase to the terrified commander as he ran up seven tiers of the fortress, trying to close gates behind him and ordering men to cover his fight. In the end, stompy cornered and pulverised the officer in the heart of the citadel as thousands of orks poured through the breaches he had left behind."

Competitive tier.

Oh, fine, and fluff, and looks, but that doesn't matter if I can't win.

My IG force: Totally love the idea of weak , disposable humies going up against daemons, monsters, aliens and super-soldiers and holding their own with the help of the biggest guns they can muster and mind-numbing numbers. I think of Guard as the 40K version of Skaven really... Also love the aesthetic of armor: Leman Russ Tanks + Vendettas +artillery and vane human pageantry in banners and fancy commanders who die at a light breeze.

My orks: Love the idea of sci-fi savages running at the enemy with junk-yard-tech level weaponry and vehicles. I love the size of the models, the conversion potential and the general sense of humor the range has (mostly grots) The fluff did sell me on these guys as well; really just a light-hearted force which stands in direct opposition to the droning devotion of imperialist forces, or the over-the-top villainy of Xenos and chaos.

I loved Tyranids from Rouge Trader. I just loved the pic of the Nids in the book. I also love Dark Angels because I love the minis, fluff and there is multiple ways of playing them. DW, RW, GW and IW.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I chose Orks mainly because I love the model range and the ability to kit-bash/convert practically anything into an Ork vehicle or unit. They're also the race that actually is legitimately happy within 40K and it reflects my general attitude towards games in having fun rather than having some imperative to crush people under my heel in games (though that does still happen sometimes )

Dark Angels because I love their lore and SPEHS MAHREENS!!! Chaos Daemons because they are so different from any other army and are vicious.

I chose space wolves as my first army. I wanted an imperial army to learn with since they are fairly forgiving and versatile. I chose space wolves specifically because I like the lore and the models are awesome.

I went with IG for two reasons. First, I have this crazy fetish for tube artillery. Second, they're the closest thing we have to space Skaven. The real reason is I liked their background information and aesthetic the best and thought their game mechanics were interesting. Sometimes I'm tempted to pick up Space Marines because I like the idea of Black Templars but then I look at the codex and fail to find a single unit that I actually want to take. I like Eldar better mechanically but I'm not really inspired to collect or play them.

I like my Dark Angels because they are cool looking and different from other space marines. And their fluff is way more interesting.
I like my Tau because I love their futuristic-looking vehicles and drones and stuff (especially the old loveable Riptide!)
I like my Chaos Space Marines (and didn't sell the ones from DV) because I might enjoy joining the dark side once in a while!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Well, two Dark Vengeance sets meant I was going with Dark Angels but their fluff and rules were friggin awful. The modern fluff was good, Ascension of Balthazar, Trials of Azrael, the fact they had a Bullpup style CombiPlasma. But, Deathwing, the Fallen, the real mainstays of the general fluff, honestly it was dull to me. But Huron Blackheart, the Tyrant of Badab, has amazing fluff and the rules for Tyrant's Legion are friggin awesome. Very fun while still staying strong on the table. But, I hate the lion motif of the Astral Claws. So, I picked up some Sons of Orar models, had the Dark Vengeance models with Dark Angel motifs, then came across an Honor Guard squad using both the symbols of those groups on a banner. So, heraldry, colors, rules, all picked out because timing just happened to line up and everything fell into place.

I play BA right now because it's the only full army I saved from back in 3rd edition. Now i"m trying slowly to figure out which will be my next army. I'm collecting some DA, but I also am firmly interested in the Necrons and IG as well, so I'm just picking and choosing models til I find just the right set for me.

I also sorta wanna build some orks actually. But if I was gonna do it, my fluff would be that they attempted to be the cleanest of all ork warparties. I'd say the warboss realized how space marines are so efficient is by cleansing and burning. So he'd assume being well cleansed is the most important prelude to some serious burning. Hence his demands for all his boyz to clean all their gear up or be fed to a squiggoth.

ALL HAIL THE ORKISSIAH, TRINARY SPEAKING GOD OF ORK TECHNOLOGY. (Unlike wimpy old Binary, Orks have commands for Yes, No AND "Maybe")

Funny enough I had the same idea way back when I started my ork force; didn't want the overdone rusty, grimy look so I decided to paint on clean armor, smooth skin and very neat cloth. The result looked so cartoony that it took me repainting the whole army before I was happy with it. Part of it is the large surface area of ork models. Unless you do paint chips, free hand and grime it looks quite boring and unrealistic, or unfinished at best.

I agree with Robisnagg on the reason why I chose CSM and for my secondary army that I am hoping to starting off a chaos renegades I like the idea of tons and tons of worshipers of chaos attacking in hordes. also my cornbread Zerkers need something to put in front of them in larger point games a la meat shields.

Started with orks 100% because of the conversion possibilitys. in 3rd you could take most any imperial tank, orkify it, and play it . That was all I needed. So much fun.

Second army was CSM because I actually wanted to play an army that had an armor save and wasn't imperial. However, that army just barely got started when the Tau were released.

That Hammerhead. Nuff said. Instantly fell in love with the model range - had to have any army of them.

Went back to CSM to finish my powered armor army. Lots of conversion possibilities and the Goodwin daemonetts were just too beautiful to pass up.

Next was Space Wolves, simply because they were the only Imperial army I ever considered playing and I wanted a different play style so I went with a drop pod style army. That and I got to tinker with my first forgewold bits. (I wasn't impressed)

Lastly was DE once the new models were released. I love pretty much everything about the range and especially Reaver Jet bikes and Venoms.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

I've played Orks off and on since i was eight. my older brothers were playing Fantasy, and wanted me to get into the game. I chose orcs then because they sounded awesome to my young mind, and despite having basically nothing for an army (12 archers, 12 sword&sheild, 8 black orcs, a warlord, and 20 night goblins w/3 fanatics) i had fun. when they shifted over to 40k, I followed suit and started another barely make the force org army.
i stuck with orks because they still seemed awesome, and now I even got to have those "uber cool looking bikes." it took me 16 years to pick up a second army, and i got that because it was being given away for free. 6th ed chaos is fun, but GREEN IS BEST!!!

There used to be a strategic games club in my high school, and my older brother brought home the eldar and tau codexes to look at. I really liked the look of the tau, and so, from then on, I have played tau, my brother eldar.

CSM - They were my first army ages ago ( think I've owned 3 armies of them during the years ) and I find them the coolest. Lots of modeling options because Chaos is fickle.

Daemons - Because sometimes it's fun teaching Waveserpent spammers, Riptide spammers, Imperial Knight spammers, Grav spammers, Heavy Bolter 10-man Tactical Squad spammers and Canoptek Harvest spammers a lesson. And yeah, they ally nicely with CSM.

Eldar were my first faction. When I was first introduced to the game as a wee lad, most of the other factions were just... gross. Space marines were bulky jocks. Orcs were funny but lacked class. Humans were all worked up over some Emperor, and their crazy priest types made me think of humanity as being filthy peasants defined by their bizarre religious zeal. Necrons were too... skinny. Tau were interesting, but they simply didn't grab me. Eldar though. Eldar were *strange*. In a god way.

Their armor was insectile, alien, yet reminiscent of some sort of super hero's suit of exoarmor. Striking scorpions looked like the Predator! They were masters of psychic magic, and they had their backs to the wall as they fought to defend their species' very existence! Then I learned they were fast and hard hitting, just like my favorite characters from anime. I didn't get into 40k and start spending much money on it until years later, but while I was still being introduced, I *did* order a single model: my man Baharroth!

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Competitive or not, I really don't care. I've got other hobbies that fuel my competitive side. I ADORE the models, the fluff, and I really like earning my wins. They do well enough in my local meta (especially since I treat chaos as a single entity, daemons + CSM is a pretty good combo, not to mention the shiny stuff I'm getting into with IA:13, traitor guard and what not)

Money well spent IMO

Plus, with the attitude towards the CSM 'dex in recent times, I've been able to reap the benefits of multiple chaos ragequits (Most notable being ~2k or so for $70). Makes me one happy heretic.

I started by making a list of armies whose fluff I really enjoyed, and ended upbwith Tau, Eldar, Salamanders, Guard and Orks.

Then I did some calculations about the cimparative costs of each army. This led to Orks and Guard being dropped out.

Then I started watching YouTube batreps and reading online to get a feeling about how each army would play, which led me to choosing Tau in the end.
