Vulkan was a smith in the historical sense. He beat metal into useful objects with a big hammer.

Manus was an engineer. He built machines to solve problems.

So, both, basically.

Vulkan had an ability to make things beautiful or craft things that shouldn't have been possible. His perpetual motion warhound, though, was actually designed by Perturabo.

I believe Perturabo is the better engineer.

Vulkan is the better base craftsman.

Manus is the best weapon forger.

Vulkan for weapon/armor smithing.

Manus for engineering.

But Perturabo is a better engineer than Manus.

Vulkan was all about making things beautiful, whereas Ferrus was about making things functional. They were both smiths though, as opposed to engineers (obviously they were probably pretty good at engineering, but Ferrus is known for smithing/forging. He did it with his bare hands. He made Fulgrims sword for example).

Vulkan was best smith in traditional meaning of the word.

This.

Also, Fulgrim is jack of all trades in each category.

I know he was an artist, sculptor, blacksmith, but I did not know he did engineering.

Fulgrim could do anything he put his mind too.

Ferrus was good at shaping metal with his bare hands, although they were coated in metal.

Perty was probably the best engineer.

He grew up on a slowly dying planet and started off as a lowly engineer at one of the factories. He rengineered everything to be more efficient and saved the planet in typical primarch style, yada yada. Yes he was an engineer.

Fulgrims thing was pursuit of perfection. He was reasonably smart and ended up exceeding at whatever he put his mind to. His pursuits were varied.

Manus, I'd argue, was the better smith. Not only did he make things functional, but beautiful too. It takes something indescribably perfect to have Fulgrim say "That is perfect! Far superior to my own creation!"

I think he put far more effort into making that beautiful than he did usually though, and it's not like Vulkans creations weren't functional.

Between the two, I feel that Vulkan was the better weapon smith (his 9 artifacts) while Manus was the better engineer.

But... I think Perturabo outstripped them both in both fields.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Well of course they were functional too. But I doubt Manus was intent on making it aesthetically appealling. He was simply told to make the greatest weapon, and to someone as down to Earth and blunt as Ferrus Manus, the greatest weapon wouldn't need to be aesthetically pleasing. It wasn't like he was making it for Fulgrim either, they both made them for themselves.

If I remember rightly they had a "smith-off" to see who the better artisan was. They both ended up being so impressed with each others work they became the best of buddies. Fulgrim kind of messed that up though by decapitating Manus.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

I hate when my no-homo BroBro messes it all up by cutting off my head. Nawmean?

I like this back and forth regarding Vulkan and Manus on how we can determine quality from two fundamentally different criteria. Where Vulkan was form and Manus was function, Perturabo managed both.

I think the three are masters of respective disciplines without stepping on each others' feet.

They did. But Fulgrim is a die-hard perfectionist, with a massively complex inferiority-superiority complex that he had to strive to be worthy of the awards the Emperor awarded him, which he did and led him to be superior to everyone and he knew.

So when he sees the Fireblade and says "OMG awesomzz" its quite an accomplishment. Ferrus seeing a magnificent masterfully crafted hammer and having a fan-gasm isn't that shocking.
