Dwemer were Elves weren't they?

Orcs/Orsimer too, as well as Khajit. If it weren't for argonians (and then who knows if maybe) then mer would basically mean: non-human sapient.

Dwemer are a type of elf, but are basically the dwarves of The Elder Scrolls. The series doesn't have anything else remotely close to stereotypical dwarves.

Actually the Khajit don't count as men or mer either

Wait, they retconned it? Khajit, to the academics known as Betmer, were a race of mer that transformed into beasts back in the old days of the Merethic era, or so said a scholar in the base game of Morrowind.

I'm digressing though.

Sure there was - that would be WYSIWYG. If the army looks like Blud Angles, then it must play like Blud Angels. Otherwise, it's a non-WYSIWYG proxy army, and would not be tournament legal.

Khajiit are, believe it or not, an offshoote of Bosmer (Wood Elves).

I think they look cool in their own way, but there's way too many guns, and it feels too 40k that way. In a way they are set up far too much like Mantic's Forgefathers, with a basic squad of troopers with guns, and the more elite troopers being a squad of 'heavy weapons'. I understand the fluff behind the helms, but it makes them look a bit too much like Dwarven Stormcast.

At least the one thing that's great is that the sky-ships will look awesome supported by Gyrocopters as outriders! I'm not a big fan at all of the balloon-riders, but take an entire Karadron army and replace each balloon squad with a gyrocopter, and it'd look great!

I assume that the "paint scheme" rules will be the Kharadron version of the multi warscroll battalions in the more recent battle tomes. So its going to take more than blue or purple paint to get the bonuses.

They do look very nice, and I can imagine they will make GW a lot of money.

The only point of criticism I have is that each of the new factions for AOS, look they are from different game systems. I understand that they are from their own realm so have taken their racial theme to the obvious conclusion. Just from a model point of view it looks a bit too trying to cater to every niche.

It does feel like the approach that malifaux model range has embarked on. Far too eclectic to look like the forces would ever meet on the field of battle.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I agree that each faction has a very distinct look; but I would argue that this has been a feature of GW products for over a decade. Even looking at 40K, there's a huge discrepancy in the art styles and scales of space marine vs IG vehicles and body proportions. Moreover, they coexist in a universe with a very cartoony and exaggerated style of ork bodies/vehicles, and the highly stylized and fragile dark eldar design aesthetic. I see the LOTR models as more balanced in terms of aesthetic between the armies, likely because they depict a more realistic style and are based on a movie. Seeing cartoony orks (which I love) on the same filed of battle as any "realistic" proportioned opponent still makes me giggle a little.

Spoiler:

To that end, I accept these steampunk dwarves for what they are; silly and highly stylized, and am grateful that at least there seems to be a consistent aesthetic design throughout their line, which is not always true of every faction; I'm looking at you AdMech...

Are you picking on Kastellan robots? because, if you exclude them, the range is really top notch and pretty much unified in terms of design..

Pft, anyone hating on Kastellans can just send them my way. They are distinct, true, but even if you dislike their look they can easily be modded to be "more AdMech" crazy. Destroy parts of their visior to show the rotting Servitor suspended inside. Add bigger shoulder guns. Spice the admittedly lame gun hands up by by using (raptor) jump pack turbine bits to make them look like Mega Man. Give them Dreadnought CCW.

But back to weird dwarfs, outside of some of the weapons they look good even after thinking about them some more. But that chainsword fits even less into AoS than the Albion power fist and servo armour At tleast those people usually converted to look archaic, the king dudes blade would make a lot of master crafted 40k stuff envious. Not a fan. If it was more clunky I could accept it easily. I think what stonehorse said hits he nail on its head.

Even more reason to make them look like Mega Man! (I really hope my brother lets me do this to his )

What is the problem with real robots? They have no forbidden AI and their logic chips seem to be the same weird mish-mash of biological and artificial as other Imperial tech. It's all perfectly legal...and those Sororitas are NOT men under arms
Spoiler:

If the problem is the fact that servitors are cooler one could go the route of "oh, the fluff says the chips are rare and the remaining robots reclaimed by all means after destruction, those in my army were too messed up and re-purposed as armour suits for servitors, check out my cool conversions". And their torso armour fits the Nurgle plague drones really well, and the backside of Cataphract Termi armour makes a very nice "robot fac" with eyes and a breather, btw. Still haven found a good set of arms for my Nurge Mini-Knight, though.

I have to admit that they stick out, but IMO not in a bad way. Ad/Cult Mech is one of the most cohesive factions, IMO, desĂ¼ite being made up from two codizes (yeah, nice job GW, really needed those book sales, right).

Take those dwarfs and the Fyrslyrs...I don't think they'd look very good mixed together. And they're somewhat comparable to the Skitarii and Cult split, I guess. Mercs/soldiers and employers/(religious) leaders, IF your sky pirates hire some slyers.

Indeed I'm picking on the Kastellans. As someone who owns 2000+ points of Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus, while I love the Skitarii look, a lot of the units have strange design choices that make them look quite distinct from one another. The Kastellan lore is neat, but I still felt compelled to alter them so they fit the theme a bit better.

Spoiler:

On to dwarf discussion; what do you think the implications behind a fully ranged mobile army in AoS are? I really can't see an even match between these guys and say, Ironjaws. I guess it might be analogous to Tau fighting Orks in 40K?

Why you can't I mean, I will reach them and punch them in the face in turn one, the analogy you're looking for is Tau fighting Warp-spiders. Hell, gorefist+gordrakk will almost guaranteedly have them bashing the Overlords in turn one with a hundred dice.

Order Draconis (with their batallion) and tomb kings' necropolis knight (and possibly BCR) can accomplish this turn 1 charge for sure. Mobility of armies in AoS is pretty high, some of which are shooty and mobile. We don't know anything yet but I doubt this is Skryrefire or Sylvaneth level of mobility+shootiness.

The future of AOS is very interesting. If the rumours of upcoming games pan out, you could buy a single hero to play warhammer quest, add a couple of minis to play shadespire, build that up into a warband for 'not unlike Mordheim' then build that out into an army to play AOS.
I hope the overlords get rules in both warhammer quest and shadespire. To be able to play with the new minis before I have 50 payed for, built and painted would be great. (Especially as at my speed it takes about 2 years to finish a small army.)

Is there a release schedule for all this stuff? Dieing to see more of the Kharadron. Still can't get over how amazing the battleship is.

Think i might buy 2 and turn one into a chaos raider ship for my Kvaldir Ulgu force, carried upon land by the ghosts from the coven throne box. Hope they fit nicely. Have a skeleton blasting out Ulgu mists from a giant organ. A lot of dismantling I assume to get rid of the metal bits that don't suit chaos but damn it has me hyped. I was just gonna use the coven throne as the base model but what better way to represent a ship than an actual ship!

MY guess is that preorders will be up this week of march (since we don't know anything on the releases), then available the first week of april and so on. I'll inform you this monday/tuesday when my LGS guy confirms me what will drop this week.

Well the Cogmaster is pretty close to them in warhammer quest in spirit so you could use him until they get eventual rules.

GW said April.

They haven't been doing "week before end of month" preorders for big releases, unless it just so happens to coincide naturally(like if March 31st was a Saturday).
Expect preorders on April 1st, with White Dwarf on March 31st.

If Overlords were going to be releasing on April 1st, we would have seen them in the WD.

There's nothing in white dwarf that will be up for preorder next weekend though I don't think, plus if the Overlords are more than one wave I doubt they'd have the first wave in there without the rest.

Regarding releases, my local GW store manager said that they'll probably be stretched from april to may, so, probably a 3-4 weeks release, as it was with Tzeentch. He kind of hinted at mid april to mid may. Give or take a week.

I think you've misunderstood my point.

The Overlords are quite clearly going to be more than one wave. Hence why I made a point of mentioning White Dwarf. Something as big as the Overlords aren't going to be a "surprise release" like GW sometimes does.

I expect it will be broken down, thematically, into chunks.

Week 1(Preorders on April 1, releasing on April 8):
Spoiler:

That would give you the book, and everything tagged as "Arkanaut" in one swoop. They like to give a hefty chunk the first week and leave solo blisters and assorted theme items for later.

Week 2(Preorder on April 8, releasing on April 15):
Spoiler:

Week 2 would give you Grungsson, a named character, and the two items tagged "Grundstok". I have a feeling that Grungsson hails from Grundstok, but that's supposition on my part.

Week 3(Preorder on April 15, releasing on April 22):
Spoiler:

That has everything out by the end of April.

Give or take a week of releases, maybe with some of the blisters spilling over into May, and it's a pretty solid release chunk for April.
