I just looked at the new AoS archer models. They are using huge bows, with a 3 finger release.
ONe problem...the arrow is nocked to the right of the bow, not the left. NOT THE LEFT as it should be.
OMG How can you buy models that are so poorly designed...those look ridiculous. As an archer, I could never field those.

The cross bows look like a Chewbacca version of Bolt Guns. The Bows Appear to be missing their strings as well. I know this is a jokey thread... but how do these guys remove arrows from their quiver? Also are the arrows square?

Considering the correct way to fire an arrow is to the right (the outside) and not the left (inside) they got that right. It wasn't until recently that the wrong way to shoot was introduced into archery. This was because aiming didn't require rapid reloads in contests. For combat and hunting firing an arrow on the outside is the correct method to fire an arrow.

Is that the thumb grip? If so then it was developed with an outside rest in mind, the others not so much. Western archery always seemed to have a cross draw.

But that's using thumb draw.
It's true that in war, you might do it the another way since you are raining down arrows, some are bound to hit their targets.

You SHOOT an arrow and FIRE a gun..
Sorry, my old instructor was really insistent on that point.

As a modern archer, you would always nock the arrow on the left.
However, as others have pointed out, older war archers and hunters would potentially have knocked on the right, sacrificing some accuracy in order to increase rate of fire.

I'd be more worried about the physical impossibility of having a pauldron get in the way of the string, and then only having three extra arrows.

Except that you use the thumb draw used by Mongol and Eastern Archers with an arrow nocked to the right. This archer is using the Western 3 finger draw, which means he's sacrificing most of his accuracy, and I can assure you, knocking to the right of the bow is not faster.

The armour in general looks bad. Imagine the grinding noise they make as they walk or how they even use that quiver, do they pull the arrows out through the bottom or something?

I fired a bow like one time at summer camp 35 year ago. I was told to never try it again or I'd hurt myself. Since then, I've stuck with firearms. I'm much better with them.
Judicators with Skybolt Bow's are what's really missing in my Stormcast Eternal army. I can't wait until I can get some of these guys!

Both left and right nocking was used.
Assuming the archer is right handed, the left nock is more practical for keeping an arrow knocked as a right nock will simply fall off. Right nocking would require supporting the arrow on the tumb, which could give stability, but would also require you to keep the bow perfectly vertical OR having it tilted to the left. Which would be incredibly awkward. A left nock would let you keep your bow tilted slightly to the right, which would keep your arrow resting against the bow and you could use your pointer finger to keep it there.
Modern bows use left nocking for a reason as most sights and arrow rests are built into the left side of the bow. and for the above mentioned normal angle of holding your bow. Lefties gotta get special bows or make do with right handed bows.

I'm going to go ahead and assume the arrows and bows work like the Prosecutors' hammers: the Stormcast Eternal grabs a bolt of freakin' lightning out of the aether, glares at it until it damn well looks like a bow and arrow, and then hurls it at any poor bastard gauche enough to wear red and chain, which forces the arrow-née-lightning into its final transformation as a twin tailed comet made of burning biceps that explodes like Chrostian Bale in a nitro glycerine silo.
But I can understand how someone could be cool with Hammer Bro Raiden Prosecutors going all Zeus in Fantasia but not with Valkyrie-Robocop Robin Hood nocking his bow wrong. It's like GW did no research at all.

I did archery at university in the early 1980s and gave it up after leaving. I seem to remember placing the arrow on the right of the bow. Perhaps this is an aspect of technique that has changed over the decades.

I did archery in the late 90's and always put the arrow on the left of the riser, my Dad did archery in the 60's and put it on the right, but I don't know if they was a consistent thing back in those days. My compound bow is a centre draw, the draw string is slightly offset to the left and the riser is slightly offset to the right so that the arrow sits on the left BUT the drawstring is perfectly in line with the arrow rest. I think there's a bit of misunderstanding with the "archer's paradox" and arrow flexing. I will be the first to admit I don't understand all the dynamics involved, but I've heard some people say using a two or three finger draw with the arrow on the right of the bow will mean the arrow will rub against the riser in an unpredictable manner because the string initially moves to the left when you release the draw string (hence why people think the Stormcast Archers are wrong). However.... watching high speed footage of people firing bows I THINK that the arrow will flex toward the riser then away from the riser (to clear it) regardless of whether you use a 3 finger draw or a thumb draw, it seems to me that the dominant effect isn't your release but rather the string approaching the riser causing the arrow to flex toward the riser. That's not to say it won't change the dynamics, but I don't think it'll rub on the riser like some people are thinking (unless the arrow stiffness is wrong which is a different issue again). So... I think the sigmarine archers are fine in firing their bows the way they are. The fact they look derpy is for completely different reasons

I've actually never seen or noticed a left side arrow placement - to me that would look really strange lol.

It's interesting that I am in the middle time-wise between your father and you. Perhaps the left side rest technique was starting to come in during the early 80s but had not yet reached the north-west UK.
Google shows lots of images with the arrow either side of the bow. If there is a trend, the more old-fashioned the bow the more likely it is to be on the right.
Japanese archery features the thumg ring release and the arrow on the right of the bow, I believe.

I can't think of a single GW bow that does have the string modelled! And I play Wood Elves.

We're primarily talking about which side of the bow the arrow is resting on, not the presence of the string.
Though given how chunky these models are, they probably could have modelled the string on them. Wood Elves are much smaller and more slender models, you can't really do a decent looking plastic string on them.

Are we all ignoring the fact that these bows don't actually shoot metal arrows, but instead shoot "crackling arrows of pure lightning"? For all we know, the metal arrow is just a conductive placeholder and the mechanism for summoning the lightning is in the bow/arrow combination.
Having said that, from a western archery perspective, a lot about their pose is bad. I belong to an archery club and practice in my free time. I'm by no means an expert, but I can at least go to a big budget movie and say things like "that guy knows archery" or "that guy doesn't". I don't think the Eternals know archery.

That would require an extra sprue. And we all know sprue economy is the one thing the company does exceedingly well.
