I'm curious to see where everyone stands with their backlogs. Do you even have one? Or do you buy just one model at a time? Some sort of mix? I only like to have a few boxes at a time and I'll finish them before I buy anything else no matter how bad I want something new. This way I make sure nothing is squandered and I don't have to feel guilty about having boxes I won't get too.

Nope, I have only three complete models from my Blood Angels. The rest is in various stages of completion.

My Crimson Fists have three Rhinos, a Land Raider, a Stormtalon, a full squad of Sternguard, a Drop Pod, two Land Speeders, a squad of bikes and a few others that need completion. I will be completing my Crimson Fists before I move on to my Blood Angels any more. I will probably get another Stormtalon for the CF and that will hopefully be it for that army.

I do assemble most of each thing before moving on to buying another. So most of my army is at least built.

Oh sometimes if my FLGS is having a 40k sale/Christmas sale or I can get a discount because I know the owners and they're awesome I will put down for a ton of stuff. But after that I will not under any circumstances buy more. I finish my stuff.

Sadly no :(
The backlog tends to shrink currently. But only in the armies I'm currently playing. I still have a huge collection of orks and wfb on sprew. The only way I will probably get rid of the backlog is selling it.

I'm on top of an ever-growing pile, and it is not all mine. I have mates handing me bags of minis to paint every couple of months. Doesn't help that GenCon happened not too long ago.

I've put a ban on buying anything and have stuck to it for the last few months..... *but*.... I feel the Warpath Kickstarter will really test my resolve.

I do keep churning things out, though, and I get to paint many different things which expands my skill-set.

Congratz to you on your discipline. I'm sure there are many here who envy it, somewhat.

Get your models on the table and looking good!

I currently have 3 Tyranid models complete (Warrior, Tguard, Termagant) and 4 more Nid models just require their bases to have the paintjob finished (2 fex, 2 zoan) then there is the matter of the various more MC's and 150+ gants/gaunts that are unpainted. :(

I’ve got a decent sized backlog. My goal is to paint one mini a week, and I want to make sure I’ve got enough stuff stockpiled so I don’t have to stop. I’ve got enough active projects primed and ready to last me until 2017 at the moment. My unbuilt/on sprue is actually quite low atm.

I do have a lot of old, dead, irrelevant stuff I could paint if I wanted, but mostly that just collects dust, and I don’t count it.

One of my new year’s resoulutions for that last few years has been to paint more they I buy. I’ve been keeping up with that.

I have a tendency to accumulate minis faster than I can build and paint them. I've been on a huge push to reduce my backlog, though, and almost got all my unassembled minis built. Then it's time to paint my grey shame.

I was on top of it for a while. Only every having the next unit I wanted to put together plus one or two impulse buys or good deals.

Then a few years ago a hot water tank explosion wiped out about 80% of my stuff. The good news is minimal damage to my inlaw's house (where I had them stored from a recent move). Better news is their insurance covered almost all of it at replacement. Bad news... I got tones of stuff new in box all at once. What I still have to in the box from then: 4 ravenwing battleforces, 2 LRs plus crusader/redeemer upgrades, 2 speeders, 2 RW bike kits, 4 dev squads, 2 assault marine kits, 2 razorbacks, 1 space marine commander, 3 venerable dreadnoughts, 2 cc scout kits. I'm sure I'm missing a thing or two, as I'm not at home.

To be fair, I've since put together and painted: 2 RW battleforces, 2 predators, 4 tac squads, 2 devs, 1 razorback, 2 dreds, 2 RWCS, 2 DV sets, 3 chaplains(termy, jump pack, and bike), 3 libbys, and 2 scouts with sniper rifles. Only 2 of those are still needing paint finished on them.

The problem was two fold. First, it really sucked when I lost all my hard built collection. It took me the better part of a decade to collect, build and paint that stuff. I ended up taking a long break when it happened, as it just seemed too overwhelming to start again. The second is that it IS overwhelming, it seems like a never ending pile of boxes that it will take forever to get through, and I'm a very slow painter

Almost everything I buy, I buy second hand from people I know, so I get bigger lots of stuff. Of course that give me plenty of backlog of painting projects. That is ok though. I slowly chip away at it. I have enough painted to play most lists I like and as i paint new stuff I try it out in new lists just to show off my newly finished models. Have not been playing a lot of games recently so that slows my painting down a bit.

As for buying anythign more, I will if a great deal comes my way, but I don't have the urge to go out looking for stuff or to buy any new boxes.

I buy and paint one "unit" at a time.

I don't play with unpainted models (period) - so the only way to get the models I like on the table is to do it this way - it also slows me down and stops me buying new stuff until the older ones are done.

It also helps that I don't have pokemonitis (gottagetemall syndrome) and don't buy "ALL OF THE THINGS".

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

One of the few things I did buy recently with my backlog was more of the old ravenwing battleforces. They were discontinued and I bought 3 at various places because they were just too good of a deal on masses of bikes/speeders to not snatched the last of them up

I'm really bad about keeping up on backlog. I have Chaos boxes from 2001 still left unopened and for whatever reason my second mob of orks (there are 8 of them now) are still just primered 0_0

I think my issue is summed up in this quote, as I have to have at least one minimum sized squad of each unit in an army

At last count I have something like 13 boxes ranging from tanks down to a 5 man cultist unit that still need to be put together, primed and painted. I should probably stop getting more til I fin OOOO SHINY!

I only buy what I want to use, so everything I have is built. Now, everything being painted is quite another story. Depending on what I'm fielding each game it sits around 50/50, slowly increasing what is painted. Backlog is big, but gradually diminishing.

Since dropping back into the hobby after a c. 10 year break, I've been much better at not buying new stuff til I've painted what I have (much of which has been boxed up since pre-hiatus) and I'm generally finding the process a lot more satisfying. So far I've managed to slog my way through 30-odd boyz and 20 grots, and I'm persevering with some Lootas at the moment, despite finding them supremely annoying to build/paint. I've got a trukk and SAG Mek lined up as a reward once I finish them though.

Backlog is frightening and growing worth no hope of abatement because I paint so slowly and like too much stuff. My goal is never play an army without having done something to improve it between games. Well before that my goal is to have enough of a start that when I do start playing again, the vision for the army can be seen.

I was doing fairly well on the painted to unpainted ratio but then I started GKs and that went to gak. Add wrist pain flair ups, MGS5, late work hours, a few gifts, and painting up some of my friend's models to the mix and the end result is my backlog is too darn high. My focus is more on playing than painting (im the 20%?) so I won't hold off a purchase due to a backlog but I do like playing with painted models.
Current "To Do" list is:

1 Box of Boyz unassembled
1 SAG Big Mek unassembled
7 Meganobz, 60% painted
1 Deffdread primed
2 Battlewagons primed
1 Dakkajet primed
2 Warbikers primed
5 "Lobbas" primed

1 Box of Kroot unassembled
2 Piranhas primed
13 Kroot primed
2 Broadsides old incomplete paintjob
2 Devilfish primed
2 Hammerheads 80% complete
20 Crisis Suit weapons primed

9 GK Terminators primed
2 Dreadknights primed
10 Interceptors primed
5 Strike Marines primed
