So I recently had made some plans to start an Eldar army, since a friend of mine had given me some of his old models. I posted a thread on here asking for some advice. Unfortunately that same friend recently asked for his models back, as he had a change of heart. So now I'm looking for another idea. I recently stumbled across some of the 30k rules and I fell in love. Unfortunately again, forgeworld models are even more expensive than GW ones. So my actual question is this, would you be ok with me using 40k space marine models and vehicles (as much as possible) to represent their 30k equivalents. War gear would be WYSIWYG, (so a tactical support squad with flamers would be regular tactical marines with flamers etc.) Now, I would pick up certain models for the force from forgeworld (certain vehicles that I can't find a decent 40k equivalent for, primarch's etc). So tell me Dakka, would this be alright with you? Or am I doomed to either abandon this project or do it one expensive squad at a time?

What kind of sick heretical filth tries to use augmented humans in power armor as augmented humans in power armor?

Kidding aside, no one in my local area minds proxying 40k marines as 30k marines. Now whether or not your opponent minds playing 30k marines at all is a different matter. From what I've seen, people are mostly fine with it around the 2k point mark. Too much more or less than that seems to start creating some mild balance issues (not that you aren't likely to run into that in 40k anyway; especially at high point games).

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Would it be alright with us? Probably. But unless you are playing us it doesn't matter what we say. My suggestion, talk to the people you'll be playing with. If they're OK with it you're good to go.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I know i'm going to come off as a jerk, but this sounds pretty lame. Half the fun of playing 30k is seeing legions of space marines from the time of Horus Heresy march against each other. It would be lame to proxy in an entire army. And I feel like throwing in random forgeworld models would make it even worse. You would have all these mk 7 space marines(lame marines) and then sprinkle in guys with mk3,4,5 and it would throw it all off. And I feel like you would take the fun away from your opponents if they were running actual armies against your fake one. Mind you this is my personal opinion on it, but I would be surprised if other 30k players frowned upon it too. Sorry to be harsh, but dont do it.

I appreciate any advice, harsh or not. The big draw for me to 30k as well is the legion models. Unfortunately even just buying a 10 man tactical squad is super expensive, thus why I wanted to use regular 40k stuff. I suppose I could try to do it 1 squad at a time, but that would take an extremely long time.

Just wait a little while. 30k in plastic rumors are everywhere right now and plastic by GW is almost guaranteed to be cheaper than resin by Forge World. We're talking a third off the price or cheaper, and without ridiculous Forge World shipping costs. Load up on these boxes and then get Forge World when you can afford it to make it into a real fighting force.

But I have to agree Mindstrike. 30k is all about the fancy look for me atleast. I want to be blown away by what I see on the table. I would be bummed if I spent the time on 30k models and then went against a majority 40k army. Not bummed enough to turn down the game, but I wouldn't be able to get into the cinematic a of the game nearly as much.

I'll keep an eye out for the plastic 30k stuff, depending on how that works I may actually be able to start a 30k army.

I love the idea of 30k but the buy in price is way too high. I personally would have no issues with proxies but would much prefer to see legions.
Forgeworld will only sell directly to customers so won't be seeing it in any local stores sorry (our local cheap hobby supplier just tried) so fingers crossed Gw bring out a plastic range soon.

No way. If your playing a 30k hersey era army - I expect to see period accurate armor, including the specific chapter upgrade shoulder pads and so on, proper weapons, and correct paint scheme.

None of that crazy custom "paint how you want" crap from 40k.

Real quick here, would you all be cool with 30k Legion models moved into 40k? They look so much better for the Emperor's Children and Sonic Marines in my opinion.

I use Legiones rules in 40k and I have no issues with it.
30k Legion models are just better looking in general so I'd be fine.

As was said earlier, 30k models for 30k rules.

I wouldn't care if you use the legion Astartes rules in 40k. They typically suck versus the 40k codices sub 2500 points; and most pick up games are 1500-2000.

I mean, a squad of grav cents could probably handle an entire 30k army on their own. Primarch included.

Wiped the floor with Eldar and still had half my army to spare; crap rolls or no. No Primarch either.

I find that Legiones Astartes are more open to list building and they are not limited to three builds like Codex Mehreens is and every Legion is their own flavour and units, don't take the unique units; boned.

Wow. It's amazing how much 30k guys and historical players have in common.

OP, what I did when starting out in HH is just buy plastic terminators and ran pride of the Legion with them. Indominitus pattern (The plastic Termies) is explicitly stated to have been around during the HH. Then I used plastic Land Raiders and a Spartan Assault tank to transport these bad boys around. Basically, I only use stuff that is "period-correct" for the mid Horus Heresy. Which does mean no 40k tacticals unfortunately as they are very, very late war.

Ultimately you should ask your gaming group. Though some GW plastics may be "period-correct" they may still frown on such things as they just want to play with the FW goodness.

They sound very much alike, actually.

The draw for me to 30k was the HH novels, the excellent job FW did with their books, and the models. I've played in 4 30k Events now, so I'm an expert on the subject.

The players I met had mostly beautifully painted, FW armies. We all had fun. Beers were shared. Marines were killed. Life was good.

Having played with 30k vs 30k with the HH models, I'd probably pass on someone using GW models. If you are using some as stand-ins to try something out, fine. Otherwise, I'd gladly play my 30k list against your 40k list.

Your example doesn't really mean anything to me as someone who isn't a big history buff.

If the point is that those things didn't exist yet then... Well if they look like the stuff they're being used as reasonably enough to not cause the standard proxy problems, then there's no problem.

Hopefully Crash you atleast understand that to someone that IS a big history buff, this is something important. Well to someone who invested significant time, energy and money into the 'historical accuracy' of 30k where nearly everything is written in stone MUCH better than 40k ever will be, it's no different.

You don't have to share the sentiment, just respect it as different than your own.

It's the historical gamer's mindset. People want things to be as they were during that particular time and place. Having proxies isn't a gameplay issue. To many 30kers, it ruins the immersion of them playing back during the time of the Horus Heresy.
