I do but i have seen guys play games at my store with out them ( I don't ask where it is). Was thinking about adding an allied force and that got me thinking with battle scribe and from what I hear new minis come with rules, is the codex even nessary? Expcially if yor just running a small allied detachment. I know battle scribe not perfect so always good to be able to conform but just got me thinking........what say you?( this is a question for non competive play of course)

I always bring the codex. Battlescribe is great, but it has errors somtimes, and its just smarter I believe to have the book on hand

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes

I own the codex for all armies that I play.

When I just want to read about my opponent's stuff, I don't usually buy it, but read it... some other way...

I always bring my book(s). Otherwise I have no idea what anything does

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I love battlescribe. It is not a substitute for a codex however. It occasionally has errors, and sometimes not the whole story.

If you want to play the army, get the codex.

Always. Battlescribe doesn't always print off the rules - and there is a sense of 'you might have edited that' with printed Battlescribe armies.

At least with Codexes/BRB/IA you've got solid evidence to form an argument for rules interpretations.

I own 14 codexes & army books + a huge number of other things such as campaign books, white dwarfs etc for unusual units I liked to field. Currently I can't use non of them for the armies I play most. The last army book I bought ( orks) I hate with passion. The army I play most. Inquisition + allies is impossible to maintain. The main book is not available in physical form (Inquisition) and I gave up updating my allied army books . I just don't care any more. They can suck it, is just not practical to bring 4+ books, nor is having to show an epub on a mobile phone. I print my datasleets If I know that I'm facing rule lawyers but that is it. I would consider buying GW datasheet cards, and perhaps even a fluff book if it was really good . But I'm not going to expend my useless GW books collection any more.

I own all the books for all the armies I own and a few that I do not.

I bought a few on iBooks, and it does make it much easier to toe it all around. But, there is just something about owning the physical book and thumbing through the pages.

Absolutely. Even if I don't look at them that game, it's gentlemanly to have them for your opponent's sake.

Though I do not have a Dark Eldar army, I won the codex because I am planning to start an army.

As a matter of habit and policy, I always bring both my codex and the rulebook to every game I play.

Don't have the codex that is fine. Just don't expect to win any debates if I think something is wrong. It's up to you to prove it, and Battlescribe or copies or illegal PDF's or what not, is not proof of anything.

Only legit paper books or legal eBooks will be proof.

I used to, I haven't played since 5the ed and am looking at playing again soon. For now battle scribe and other means will have to do. I'm not committing to a codex unless I start playing more.

The dark behind the eyes.

I own the books for 2 of the 3 armies I play.

Generally though, the only things I ever need to look up are random tables (Warlord Traits, Combat Drugs etc.). Pretty much everything else I just know off by heart. Well, everything else I use, anyway.

I own both codex and rulebook, but didn't buy them from GW. The price of codices has skyrocketed into Oblivion since the switch to hardback, and my army is CSM, so when I began with them I just didn't feel like paying full retail price. Don't even get me started on the rulebook, to release that only two years after the 6th edition one... for feth sake.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

Good luck trying to distinguish a legal eBook from a pirated one.

Yes. Well, technically I own the FW rulebook that is my "codex", but same end result. I play in stores, and playing in stores with pirated rulebooks is TFG behavior.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Yup. I've not bought a codex for close to 5 years now, but since I'm playing retro 4th edition, I'm just using all of my old codexs that I have and its been great.

I own all the codexes for the armies I own. I will get the new Tau book to stay current with that army, even though I don't have a full army for Tau yet. For my Assassins, I use WDW #65 since I don't have the official dataslate.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

From 3rd Ed to 5th ed i bought all the codexes of all the armies, for Fluff reasons but mostly to inform myself of the strengths and weaknesses of my ennemies a "Know your ennemy" philosophy.

But that was when the prices where reasonable and you had like 4 codexes a year, now?, with the stupid prices and a codex each 2 months?, nope DLL pdf versions of the books that i don't plan to play.

Own CSM, Deamons and KDK+IA13 and thats more then enough.

Not having a codex is like not having the models. But, models can be proxied, rules cannot.
So, I have the codex for each army I play, usually hardback but ebook for a couple.
I don't force anyone to show me the rules for their armies, but if anyone asked me, I have them ready.

For the ebook ones, I print off the pages I need, and take the ebook along on my phone.
I had to paste screenshots into Word to do it though, as most ebook readers don't let you print from them.

If you want to test out an army, try to get someone to have the codex with them, or use the store's copy. Making assumptions about rules can cause problems if you get them wrong before spending hard-earned cash on something you once got told.

I do. I like to have the fluff parts of them. I've got a few copied codexes so I can read the fluffy parts, if I start those armies, I'll buy the books for them first though.

Yes and some for the ones I don't play..............I used to buy them all but gave up in 6th ed due to declining quality and hugely rising price.

I much prefer to play someone who actually has their Codex in case stuff sounds wrong or is not clear.

hard copy preferred, then digital - easier to check stuff together on the hard copy.......
