South Korea

A brief introduction: I have been a casual dakka user for many years now, and played Warhammer primarily with a close group of friends at my home in Canada. Recently I've decided to move to South Korea for work, and have been loving it here! That being said, I left all my hobby supplies in storage back home, and I do have a fair amount of off-time where it is too late to travel or do anything touristy. So I decided to look at this as an opportunity.

Back in Canada I fell prey to the habit of building far faster than I had time to paint, and this resulted in a lot of half-painted miniatures/armies and armies of wildly varying different quality of paint jobs. This was probably worsened by the fact that at least once a week I would walk down to my FLGS and tempt myself to buy something. I am usually able to resist the temptation, but when your FLGS is a 10 minute walk away....my will lapsed more than once, shall we say.

This, however, is not the case in Korea. With the release of the new Tau, I took it on myself to start a single model at a time. To my knowledge there is one store in Korea that sells Games Workshop products and it is about an hour on the subway from where I live. My goal is to slowly build up this collection during my time in Korea (the next year or two) and then integrate it with my models back home.

So I decided to start a personal blog here on Dakka to keep myself motivated! I am not an especially good painter, nor do I plan to make any wild conversions. However if anyone is interested enough to follow this adventure of mine, I would love to hear feedback and advice as I go so I can fix it during the process, rather than having someone point out what I should have done at the end

With all this being said, here is the starting point:

I have started by hand priming the model with Imperial Primer (ugh). Than I based with Abaddon Black, Added a layer of Eshin Grey, then gave it a wash of Nuln Oil. I want to make the legs/joints more of an obvious grey than the typical black of the main Tau schemes. I have also kept several parts off (weapons, toes, leg/groin plates) but will be painting them along with it as sub-assemblies.

Anyway, hopefully this goes well and I'd love to hear what everyone on Dakka thinks! Feel free to ask any questions or give any advice

Edit: My plan, we'll see how much I get through:

Optimised Stealth Cadre
Ghostkeel Complete
Stealth Team x2 Complete x1

Retaliation Cadre
Commander (Not started)
Broadside x3 (1x WIP)
Crisis Suit x9 (3x WIP)
Riptide (Not started)

Another semi-successful night of painting. I opted to go for a yellow/black Badmoonz-esque theme (because I miss my Badmoonz oh-so-much) but will be adding a splash of colour with some turquoise on the head/sept markings. Here's what he looks like at the end of night 2. I still need to clean up (I was getting pretty tired towards the end) and there's still a lot left to do, but I'm fairly pleased with how it's coming. As always C&C is appreciated!

Looking good. I too know the pain of buying far to much than can be possibly be painted in a reasonable timescale. Everytime I try to stop buying to close the backlog GW release something to break me!

Nice Tau, it'll be cool to see an army develop. Is that the new Ghostkeel?

I know the feeling. It took every fiber of my willpower to not buy a Gorkanaut before I left

And yes, it's the Ghostkeel sans much of his armour, as I'm painting them separately, and the head is not glued in yet. I'm actually quite fond of the model and it's been a good after-work project to work on

Thanks for the comment!

And the grind continues. Cleaned up some of the detals, and washed with black. Also got the knee pads caught up to speed. I plan to carefully layer the plates with yellow next time, and then highlight and the main body should be done

Update #...4?: Slowly layering up the panels when I find spare time. Went adventuring during the weekend so I didn't have much time to paint. The knee pads are more or less done, so that's the colour the expect for the rest of the yellow...I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. I also dropped the head accidentally so I have to repair the chipping on it :(

Brief aside: I'm beginning to remember why I hated painting yellow on my Badmoonz....

Hey there and welcome to South Korea!! Orctown is the one and only stockist here in SK - am presuming you've already found it and been there. Really nice staff.
Ghostkeel is looking good. I actually quite like the grubby look of the black wash over the yellow. But then again I like the worn, chipped and fresh from the fight look!

Yes, we made the trek to OrcTown and plan to go again this weekend I was actually quite impressed with the setup they have...it was more space than I had expected

Thanks for the post!

no worries. They have an online site for delivery as well which can be pretty handy as well (esp for me as I live an hour from Seoul) - in line with usual korean deliver times.....usually takes a day from order to doorstep!

I wish I had known about Orctown! I lived in South Korea for 5 years and had a hobby drought throughout!

Great progress on the Tau so far :-)

I looked at the delivery and I might take advantage of it later, as I'm about an hour away too. I do like getting out of the house, though, and it lets me explore a different area

Also we still haven't figured out our mailing address so all our mail comes to our work at the moment....

I'm certainly glad I found it! I love that they have painting rooms and lockers to leave your stuff at. Not something I think I will use personally, but I think they're great ideas that my FLGS back home didn't have

Thanks for the comment

Got some more time to plug away at the ghostkeel this weekend. Here he is (minus an arm). The body is more or less complete, just need to assemble all the other stuff I haven't glued on yet (which I've been neglecting T_T )

Let me know what you think, and if there's anything you'd change/improve on

Looking good - colour scheme is really powerful. Only thing I would say though is you need to think your paints down a lot more; you can see on the chest and down to the knees especially that the coats look a bit thick and lumpy. Otherwise he begining to look the business. Are you magnetising the weapon arms? Any thoughts on how your going to base him?

Yes, I agree. I've been trying to get back in yhe swing and these are parts I painted first. So while i did thin my paints, I think I needed a few attempts to get the ratio proper. That being said, the lighting in my apartment does exagerrate it quite a bit :(

I haven't decided on the base yet...I've thought maybe a rockey/mountain theme but who knows. Really it will come down to what I can find around me without ordering something out f country

Hahaha - yeah. Know that feeling. Trying to scrounge up stuff for basing and dios can be .......interesting over here. There is a huge art store in hongdae in Seoul that can be pretty useful for finding stuff though

Yeah, I went with my girlfriend to an art store in Hongdae (maybe the same one) but unfortunately I lack the foresight to predict anything I will need outside of the immediate future

Thanks for the kind words

Next update: got one arm finished, and started on his drone friends while waiting for washes to dry. Still stumped on what to do for bases. I've always been a fan of rocky cork terrain, but not sure it fits.

Aiming to have him done sans base before Christmas

Looking good. You dont see yellow tau that much and it looks good on them (kinda the same reason i use Purple lol)

I lived in South Korea for a year when i was in the Airforce, and i never met a single local that played this game outside that dinky shop in Seoul. Orctown was a two hour trek for me and my friends since i was stationed in Osan Airbase, so we didnt go there that much (that and theyre expensive, least when i was there).

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Yeah it's about a little over an hour for me to get their by train, but luckily Januine has advised me to order by phone to take advantage of the awesome Korean postal service for deliveries And yeah it's a little expensive. Not quite AU or NZ bad, but you know...plastic crack and all that.

I've gotten this fella near completion sans base. I forgot about his shoulder-mounted guns (oops!) so they'll be added on after Christmas and his drone friends are getting there but need a little more work. As always C&C is appreciated. I'm not sure what I want to go for with the base. I was thinking of doing lava, but I think it might clash with the yellow. Any ideas on what environment might compliment the colour scheme?

Edit: not sure why it says I'm posting from Singapore :S

You want a basse that won't detract from the bright fig. I'd go with rubble and ruin. Greys n brown. Will look dramatic without distracting from the model

Thanks~ I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I always forget what a pain yellow can be to work with.

That's a good idea, I'll try that when I get back from Christmas and see how it works

Really nice. I especially like the grey on the gun with the hint of blue at the barrel end. Really nice.

Super past due blog update:

The Ghostkeel is more or less done! I'm waiting for some resin bases in the mail to give it the finishing touch, but until then it is done! I messed up one of the fusion blaster barrels so I'll need to fix that with green stuff when I get my base. I'm fairly happy with the scheme, and I'm excited to start on the next squad!

And while I expected to keep my painting/modeling exclusive to Tau, my girlfriend got me a box of Meganobz for Christmas, and an Admech Dragoon for herself (to paint as her first ever model). Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Great job on the ghostkeel. The yellow really works and pops. Meganobz next? Hope your g/f liek the dragoon - it's a gorgeous model - bit of a fiddly fether to put together but lush once done. Think I painted mine in a few sub-assembles iirc

Thanks for the comment! It certainly has been and there isn't always time for painting but I can't shake the plastic crack :p

Thanks! I'm undecided if it will be Meganobz or Stealth Suits left. Probably meganobz, but we shall see!

Yeah I've advised about sub-assembies and all that. Luckily she has an art background so she's fairly adept at this sort of thing even though she's never made a model before
