I sold all of my Warhammer things (or so I thought) six months ago and havn't been paying attention to the updates for the last year. Searching some boxes in storage, I turned up a few half-made riptides that I forgot about. So now that my finances are stable once more, I am thinking about returning to the game. I have no models except 2 riptides and was wondering what to add to them to make the most competitive list possible (my friends and I are insulted if you don't bring your best, as it is like saying "hey, I know you suck, so I made my army not as good as it could be"). I was thinking about adding another riptide for a total of three and then:

1) Adding 2 more riptides from the enclave and a ton of crisis suits.

2) Throwing in a KX128.

3) Getting something else yall think would be better.

4) Selling the 2 of em' and buying a different army (not opposed to that, but would need hand-holding amounts of guidance).

3 Riptides, 2 Stormsurges, and a buffmaander will see you far for a more traditional Tau build.

For a more crazy new competitive build try 4-5 Ghostkeels. One formation is a ghostkeel wing and the other a optimized stealth cadre with two of the ghostkeels in it. Buffmander in some marker drones.

Get 5 more riptides and a bunch of drones and run a riptide wing combined with a drone net.

3x Riptides, 2x Target lock, 1x Stimms, 3x EWO
3x Riptides, 2x Target lock, 1x Stimms, 3x EWO
1x Riptide, Stimms, EWO

4x Marker Drones
4x Marker Drones
4x Marker Drones

Then either add 1 more riptide or just keep adding drones.

The riptides can fire twice once per game if they didn't move, can re-roll nova reactor if within 6" of another riptide from the formation.

The drones gain interceptor, jink, perscision shot and outflank while at least 2 units of drones are alive.

Always wanted BS6 ignores cover riptides during interceptor? Now you can have it.

How are you getting 3 stimms? I thought only one per army.

Riptide Wing and Ghostkeel Wing are formations consisting of 3 units each, each unit can have 3 models, total of 9.

The delicious cheeeese! There's better lists, but this would bring so much tears to so many. Also anyone who hates Riptides will get so mad at this. Like my friend who gets mad at the sight of one Riptide.

Its important to note what your looking to get out of playing again. Are you looking for the following
A. Do you want to play hard core competitive lists, casual, or somewhere in between?
B. Do you want to make friends or be the cut throat player?
C. Do you like to play Tau? If not do you like shooting armies, assault, horde, elite?
D. What fluff is the most interesting to you? This game is a lot about the hobby side of things as well as the narrative backstory of the factions. Its investing a lot of money so make sure you are taking what you want.

Its not hard to make a strong Tau army but in a casual setting it can be hard to find people who want to play against a grot kicker list like what Drasius listed. You don't want to find yourself shelving all but 1-2 riptides to find a casual game or end up having to play against that Eldar guy each time who goes for the invisible wraithknights every match.

Grab the Mont'ka book and have a look at the riptide wing formation (and the Drone net formation while you're there).

Also, Stimulant injectors has always been wargear, not a relic.

Remember, it's unbound that's ruining the game, not formations (or allies)...

A. I'd like as competitive as I can get without being TFG.
B. Would like to play competitive.
C. Its alright, not the most fun.
D. Space Marine fluff is my favorite.

Im tempted to finish converting the two Valkyries I have into Hueys and make my AstraNAM' army, since I think it would be fun.

Ya, I gotto make a memo to take a look at the new books next time I head to my FLGS for X-wing.

Riptide Wing is unique to Riptides.

As mentioned running the Riptide Wing in combination with the Networked Drone Formation is a pretty solid build to start. Personally I'm looking at my running my Riptides like this:

-x2 Riptides
*w/ Ion Accelerator, x2 EWO (or x1 EWO and x1 Target Lock), Stimulant Injector, Plasma/Fusion/SMS

-x1 Riptide
*w/ HBC, EWO, Velocity Tracker, SMS/Fusion/Plasma

-x1 Riptide
*w/ HBC, EWO, Velocity Tracker, SMS/Fusion/Plasma

This gives me 2 units of HBC's that can be used to bring down Flyers and deal with Heavy Armor (thanks to Rending) and a pair of Riptides with Ion Accelerators for AP2 goodness.

I wouldn't count on it though, the Riptide Wing rules specifies XV104 Riptide.

Uh guys, remember he is been gone for six months and doesn't know what is going on. He may not know about the new Tau codex. So you can either buy the new Tau codex or use the old Tau codex but buy the Kayoun book and then will be updated to the new current Tau codex.

That's actually a bad idea, the Kauyon supplement lacks the rules for the Ghostkeel and the Stormsurge as well as the relevant markerlights changes involving the Destroyer Missiles.

No it has all those. I'm looking at it now. It's missing 4 bs piranhas and that 3+ mc or tanks firing are +1 bs.

Also 6+ riptides IS that guy, sorry.
